Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk may have just hinted that she is retired from mixed martial arts.

As fans got excited for the stacked UFC 251 pay-per-view that took place last night, what may have gone under the radar earlier in the day was a social media post from Jedrzejczyk.

Currently vacationing in Bulgaria, the Polish star used one notable hashtag in her post — #33andretired.

Is Jedrzejczyk Done With The Sport?

It’s not clear as of now whether she is actually retired, but it wouldn’t be all that surprising either after her last fight.

Jedrzejczyk last competed in March where she went to war with Weili Zhang for 25 minutes for the women’s strawweight title. After a fight many considered to be the greatest in women’s mixed martial arts history, it was Zhang who retained her title following a razor-thin split decision victory.

Jedrzejczyk notably took a lot of damage in the fight including a huge hematoma on her forehead. It was also her second failed attempt at regaining the title as well as her third overall since losing the strawweight strap to Rose Namajunas in 2017.

Although she denied she was retiring a few weeks after the fight, she did admit she pondered retirement everyday and that every fight going forward was a risk, especially as she plans on being a mother in the future.

One thing is for sure — if she has indeed retired, she will certainly go down as one of the greatest female fighters of all time.

Rose Namajunas Explains Why Zhang vs. Jedrzejczyk Isn’t FOTY

Rose NamajunasFormer UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas doesn’t believe the fight between Weili Zhang and Joanna Jedrzejczyk is the best 2020 has had to offer. Former UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas doesn’t believe the fight between Weili Zhang and Joanna Jedrzejczyk is the best 2020 has had to offer.

Zhang made the first defence of her 115lb title against Jedrzejczyk at UFC 248 in March. The two women went to war over five rounds in what many believe to be one of the best fights of all-time. Ultimately, Zhang walked away with a split decision win to retain her title but the bout could’ve gone either way.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani of ESPN Namajunas gave props to her strawweight rivals but expressed her personal opinion that the fight cannot be considered as the best this year due to the lack of defence on show, she said.

“It was a great fight and both of them are some savages for sure. However, the only gripe that I have about it being like the best fight ever or whatever is that people always say that, and I don’t think that’s a good thing. I don’t think it is a good thing to have the ‘best fight ever’ based on how people look at the ‘best fights ever’. If you think about the best fights when people say that it’s always a lack of defense. People that are getting hit a lot, to me, that’s not the best fight ever.”

‘Thug Rose’ suggested the featherweight scrap between Josh Emmett and Shane Burgos at UFC on ESPN 11 is a much more worth candidate for fight of the year, she said.

“You know what was the greatest fight ever recently was Josh Emmett vs. Shane Burgos. That was a beautiful display of like both two different styles. To me, that was the ‘fight of the year.’”

The after effects of Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s war with Weili Zhang were hard to take for the former champion.

The pair battled for 25 minutes in a classic at UFC 248 last month with many regarding it as the greatest fight in women’s mixed martial arts history. Unfortunately for Jedrzejczyk, she didn’t come out on top as she lost a narrow split decision to the champion.

To make matters worse, she suffered a huge hematoma on her forehead that continued to swell as the fight went on. It became classic meme material and although she did laugh at some of them afterward, the pain she was in after the fight was a different story.

“They did a small medical procedure on my ear, I had a CAT scan,” Jedrzejczyk said in an interview with SCMP. “I had an ultrasound, I had an X-ray, and honestly, after a fight like this, I felt like every touch from the doctors and nurses, everything was so painful.

“I didn’t want anybody to touch my body, and I felt like my heart was bleeding, like my soul was bleeding.”

Jedrzejczyk has already spoken in the past of the damage she took in the fight. And while she does question how long she wants to remain in the sport, she has no plans to retire as of yet.

“That’s a question I ask myself every day,” she added of retirement. “I’m not getting any younger. I’m only getting older. I took lots of damage in my last fight and I’m really grateful that nothing serious happened to me. It was only bruises. Every next fight is going to be a big risk, and I want to be a mother in the future.

“… If I put on a hell of a performance, a hell of a war, why retire? If I was not training hard, if I was getting knocked out, if I was losing fights like a p****, then I could retire – but I’m a warrior.”
