Former UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk plans to challenge for the title once again come 2019.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk plans to challenge for the UFC strawweight title next year.

Before she does that, however, she already has a UFC title opportunity on her calendar. Jedrzejczyk will face Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event of UFC 231. The pair will contest for the vacant women’s flyweight title from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada.

While Jedrzejczyk doesn’t want to overlook Shevchenko, who has bested her three times before in Muay Thai competition, it’s hard to not look at possibly making history. Should Jedrzejczyk capture the flyweight title, and come back and win the strawweight title in 2019, she could become the first-ever female dual-weight champion in UFC history.

In a recent interview, Jedrzejczyk spoke on the possibility of dropping back down to 115 pounds. She believes she won’t have any issues making the weight and would like to challenge for the strap in 2019 (via MMA News):

“Yes, I will go back. Definitely I will go back,” Jedrzejczyk said. “Somehow yes, I want to face myself, go through the weight cut again, drop to 115. I’m not having problems with the weight. I want to go through this and face the champion again.

“When I lost the belt, I was like, ‘What’s now?’ It’s been a year already. I’m happy. I have a bunch of great fans. I have a life outside the Octagon. But I want to face the champion in the strawweight division next year.”

Jedrzejczyk was once undefeated in her MMA career and one of the most dominant champions in the UFC. However, once she ran into Rose Namajunas inside the Octagon, that all changed. Namajunas defeated Jedrzejczyk via first-round TKO back in November of 2017.

She dethroned Jedrzejczyk and took the strawweight title. In their rematch this past April, Jedrzejczyk fell to Namajunas once again, this time on the judges’ scorecards. Now, with a win under her belt after besting Tecia Torres this past summer, Jedrzejczyk has the opportunity to become a champion again at UFC 231.

Rose Namajunas addresses who she wants to fight next and when she wants to make her return.

The UFC women’s strawweight champion is preparing for her return after two fights against Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Their first fight went down in November at UFC 217 where Namajunas won with a first-round knockout and their second fight went down at the UFC 223 pay-per-view event in April that saw Namajunas win by decision.

The UFC champ hasn’t been seen since then but has provided an update on her MMA career. She spoke with MMA Fighting while at UFC Denver where she brought up the timeframe in which she expects to be back.

“I’ve mentioned it before that I like fighting in the spring and the fall. I think that’s a good time for me. So that’s what I’ve expressed already so we will see how things happen.”

Namajunas brought up potential fights with Jedrzejczyk, Jessica Andrade and Tatiana Suarez. She appears to be up for whatever the UFC wants to book next.

“I don’t see how anybody apart from Andrade would make sense. I know she wants to stay active and have another fight. But if not, that’s cool.”

The UFC champion continued by stating that she thinks the third fight with Jedrzejczyk is interesting. However, she’s not dismissing Andrade and Suarez either.

“Andrade definitely shook things up,” she stated, “I see Joanna Jedrzejczyk also got back on a winning streak so she’s going up so that’s kinda interesting as well. I dunno, other than that, I dunno. I guess Suarez she’s also starting to make some noise.”

Paige VanZant Reveals Why It’s Hard Staying Sidelined

Paige VanZant is going to be keeping a very close eye on Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 231.

Paige VanZant is extremely anxious to get back into the Octagon.

“PVZ” hasn’t fought since suffering a unanimous decision loss to Jessica-Rose Clark. She sustained a broken arm during the fight, which required surgery to repair. However, due to complications, she required another surgery in July. In her absence, VanZant has been watching the young women’s 125-pound division develop.

It’s frustrating for her to watch from home and not be able to be a part of it (via MMA Junkie):

“It’s opened up,” VanZant said. “There’s all kinds of crazy stuff going on and it’s really hard for me to watch all these other women be so successful – me being forced to sit on the sidelines is hard.”

Currently, the UFC women’s flyweight title is vacant. It will be contested for at UFC 231 between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Valentina Shevchenko. “PVZ” will definitely be keeping a close eye on the title bout:

“I’ve been paying attention,” PVZ said. “I think it’s obviously going to be an amazing fight and I know they have fought in the past. They’ve had three muay Thai fights, and Valentina has won all of them. But this is very different – it’s an MMA fight.

“So I’m excited to watch it as a spectator and a fan, but I’m also going to watch it as a critic and seeing that division open up. I’m excited to see the fight, but more than anything I’m excited to get back in there myself.”

VanZant also believes Jedrzejczyk will look a lot better at 125 pounds, after struggling to cut down to 115 pounds:

“I totally believe (Jedrzejczyk will be better),” VanZant said. “There’s been only a few people that you look at for weigh-ins and you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, you look like you’re going to die.’

“And that’s Conor (McGregor) when he drops down to ’45, and it’s Joanna when she makes 115. She’s tall, and she looks like she cuts a lot of weight, and I’m sure that she does. I know that moving up, she’s got to feel more athletic and more sound in her capabilities. So I’m excited to see it.”

Former Title Contender Believes She Deserves Shevchenko Fight

The UFC got Valentina Shevchenko’s next opponent wrong, according to this fighter.

The post Former Title Contender Believes She Deserves Shevchenko Fight appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Valentina Shevchenko would be fighting against a different opponent if it was up to one former title contender.

That person who thinks this is Liz Carmouche as she thinks that she should be fighting for the vacant UFC women’s flyweight title. The UFC has already announced that Shevchenko would fight Joanna Jedrzejczyk with the title being on the line at UFC 231.

If you recall, this fight got scrapped once the UFC needed a main event for UFC 230 a few weeks ago. Thus, they booked a title fight between Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanks at the show. However, once they got Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis for the UFC heavyweight title to serve as the UFC 230 headliner, they went back to their original fight. This bout was Shevchenko vs. Jedrzejczyk.

Carmouche went on record by stating in a recent interview that she deserves the fight with Shevchenko. The reason for her belief is due to her having a stoppage victory over Shevchenko.

“I’m the only one who has ever finished her in MMA,” Carmouche told MMA Fighting. “Not in Muay Thai or kickboxing. I’m talking MMA. So, that would just, you think that would make sense for me to be the one to compete against her.”

Their fight went back on a small show in Oklahoma back in 2010 where Carmouche defeated Shevchenko via doctor stoppage TKO. Although she wants the fight, she understands why the fight was booked between the rivals.

“When I heard it, I was bummed,” Carmouche said. “I understand you always want drama leading up to the fight. You want whatever publicity you can get for it. It’s more appealing for fans, for media for everything. So I understand why everyone wants that.”

The UFC 231 pay-per-view is set to take place on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.
