Joanne Calderwood certainly didn’t have the best of days.

The women’s flyweight contender put her title shot on the line against Jennifer Maia in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 5 last night.

Despite a promising start, she was eventually submitted in the first round after Maia sunk in the armbar. As a result, she lost her title shot to Maia and to make the night even more forgettable, the Scot would faint backstage following the fight.

Fortunately, she seems to be fine now.

“Confirmed with Joanne Calderwood’s manager Danny Rubenstein that she fainted backstage after the fight,” ESPN’s Ariel Helwani wrote. “She is awake and responsive at a local hospital with her coach and fiancée John Wood. Quote in next tweet…

““She was getting checked out in the medical room and fainted while sitting down. John Wood caught her, they laid her down and carted her out on a stretcher. Heart rate dropped on the way there but stabilized now.” She’s awake now @ the hospital. They don’t know yet what caused it”

Calderwood Reflects On “Rough Night”

Calderwood would eventually post an update on Sunday morning as she reflected on what was a “rough night at the office” for her.

“Well that was a rough night at the office..congratulations to Jenifer Maia..I’m so grateful for my family, friends and fans that are here to help pick me back up in this crazy life we all share. It’s a fight, everyday we all fight, but it’s not everyday it goes our way. Thanks to all the @ufc staff, the medics and docs at umc..oh and my knight in shining armour @bigwoodmma702 sorry for scaring you babe! #nevergiveup”

Joanne Calderwood will risk her position as the number one flyweight contender to step up on late notice and fight Jennifer Maia on August 1. Viviane Araujo has been forced out of their bout with Maia after testing positive for the coronavirus

Calderwood earned a shot at flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko by beating Andrea Lee in September 2019. The fight was originally scheduled for UFC 251 in Perth, Australia but scrapped due to the ongoing global pandemic. It has now been pushed back further as Shevchenko recovers from knee surgery.

The Scottish standout posted the below message on Instagram after undergoing COVID-19 in Las Vegas ahead of her late notice fight against Maia.

“Thank you Dr Nick, James and all the staff @fightdocs for sorting out my Medicals and I got a COVID test done while I was there..grateful they always have my back for my medical needs being here in vegas.”

Maia snapped a two-fight win streak last time out against former title challenger Katlyn Chookagian. Prior to that, she picked up big wins over Roxanne Modafferi and Alexis Davis. The 31-year-old was supposed to fight Araujo in June at UFC on ESPN 12 but the promotion postponed the matchup due to travel restrictions preventing Brazilians from competing during the pandemic.

The UFC Fight Night card is scheduled to go down at UFC APEX in Las Vegas on August 1. Former bantamweight champion Holly Holm will headline the event in a fight against surging contender Irene Aldana.

Do you think Joanne Calderwood will regret risking her number one spot at flyweight?

Shevchenko

The UFC’s return to Perth has taken a hit as Valentina Shevchenko will no longer be competing.

Shevchenko was set to defend her women’s flyweight title against Joanne Calderwood in the co-main event of UFC 251 taking place June 6.

However, “Bullet” will have to wait for her next potential title defense due to an ongoing leg injury per ESPN. Shevchenko sustained the original injury during her title defense against Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 247 last month but it hasn’t completely healed up since.

Shevchenko expects to be fully healed up by the end of August.

Even if Shevchenko was ready to compete, it is unlikely the card would have gone ahead given how the coronavirus pandemic continues to put a halt on the world. Calderwood believes the fight getting pushed back may even be a blessing in disguise given what’s going on right now:

“We got word last week that it’s going to get pushed back,” Calderwood told MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast. “Not because of this whole thing, but something on her end. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to say that, but we know for sure that it’s not going to be on June 6. I don’t know, I’m not sure what happened or what’s what, but it’s been pushed back. It could be a blessing in disguise.”

UFC 251 is expected to be headlined by a featherweight title fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway.

Do you think UFC 251 will still take place or will it get postponed?
