Joe Lauzon, Donald Cerrone

Joe Lauzon was scheduled to face Donald Cerrone at UFC Austin.

This past Saturday, Joe Lauzon was forced to withdraw from his planned outing with Donald Cerrone due to health issues. Lauzon was visibly absent from the ceremonial weigh-ins although he had made weight in the official ones. The 38-year-old was dealing with cramps and later revealed he couldn’t move his leg.

The contest between the two grizzled veterans was called off in what can be considered a sacrifice to the MMA gods based on the firecracker of a card that fans got barring that one fight.

It marked the second time their bout had been canceled on fight day. The pair were supposed to compete last month at UFC 274 but the matchup was written off after Cerrone got food poisoning on the day of the event.

Joe Lauzon knee works again after watching video

In a bizarre turn of events, Joe Lauzon would later reveal on his Instagram that the knee injury he suffered had suddenly recovered after watching a video someone sent him.

“So you can’t make this up, but my knee works again,” Lauzon said. “Someone sent me a video maybe an hour ago on Instagram about like, ‘This sounds like something I deal with with my knee. You should check out this video.’ And it was 100 percent, everything was exactly the problem I was having.

“It was called a ‘tib-fib dislocation.’ So basically the bones in my leg were dislocated. That’s why we couldn’t get it back. So I did the exercise in the video and it popped back in. It’s insane. My leg fully works. I’m able to hop, walk, jump.

I literally could not put socks on, I couldn’t lift my foot off the bed, I couldn’t stand, I couldn’t put any weight on it, I couldn’t do anything the last day and a half. I had to try and hobble and I couldn’t even hop on one foot because I couldn’t take my foot shaking. It was horrible.” (h/t MMAFighting.com)

UFC President Dana White told reporters that he has no plans to make the fight happen again. He referred to the failed attempts at putting together Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson but did not reveal what’s next for the two seasoned professionals.

Dana White

Dana White has stated that the UFC will not attempt to book a fight between UFC veterans Donald Cerrone and Joe Lauzon for a third time.

Cerrone and Lauzon were initially scheduled to face off at UFC 274. However, Cerrone fell ill due to food poisoning on the night of the fight, forcing the commentary team to announce the news live on air.

The fight was immediately rebooked for UFC Austin, where it was slated to take place in the co-main event of the night. Both men weighed in and all seemed to be going to plan.

However, only Cerrone appeared at the ceremonial weigh-ins, with Brendan Fitzgerald announcing that Lauzon was suffering from cramps. Shortly after, it Lauzon announced that he would not be fighting, although it was not due to cramp. The lightweight veteran had damaged his knee shortly after the weigh-ins and was unable to walk on it.

Dana White Compares Joe Lauzon vs. Donald Cerrone To Khabib vs. Tony

In the UFC Austin post-fight interviews, Dana White was asked by the press if he would consider rebooking the veteran fight a third time. White was clear in his response, stating:

“That thing is getting like Tony (Ferguson) and Khabib (Nurmagomedov). No, I will not book that fight again.”

When asked what the immediate future holds for ‘Cowboy,’ White revealed that he had turned down a fight in July, and is instead hoping to fight in the latter half of the year.

“He just cut that weight yesterday,” White said. “We sit, and we wanted to see if he wanted to fight in July, but he doesn’t want to cut weight again, so he won’t fight in July. We’ll figure something else out with him.”

UFC Austin ended up as one of the most action-packed cards of the year, but things got off to a rocky start when the event lost its scheduled co-main event on fight day.

A lightweight bout between longtime UFC veterans Joe Lauzon and Donald Cerrone was expected to serve as the co-main event for Calvin Kattar and Josh Emmett’s headlining fight at UFC Austin. After Ariel Helwani initially reported that the matchup was off, Lauzon explained via social media that his knee locked up after weighing in and the issue had rendered him unable to compete.

The booking for the Fight Night card was the second attempt to schedule a fight between Lauzon and Cerrone. The bout was originally slated to kick off the main card of UFC 274 in May, but Cerrone was forced to pull out on the day of the event due to illness.

UFC President Dana White was asked at UFC Austin’s post-fight press conference if he had any plans to book a fight between “Cowboy” and Lauzon a third time.

“Probably not,” White answered after chuckling. “Probably not. That thing’s getting like Tony and Khabib. No, I will not book that fight again.”

While Cerrone vs. Lauzon has only been canceled twice, both fighters are at the end of their respective careers and aren’t likely to wait around for the matchup to happen. Lauzon revealed before UFC Austin that he hadn’t even been certain about accepting the fight when it was first offered to him.

“Cowboy” has been the far more active fighter in recent years, but is currently on a five-fight losing streak. Lauzon had also lost three fights in a row before he stopped Jonathan Pearce in his most recent bout in 2019.

What’s your reaction to Dana White’s comments on whether or not he’ll book Cerrone vs. Lauzon again?

A matchup between UFC veterans Donald Cerrone and Joe Lauzon has been canceled once again after a Lauzon knee injury.

News of the canceled Cerrone/Lauzon booking was first reported by Ariel Helwani.

Lauzon’s knee locked up shortly after their weigh-in on Friday, as he revealed on social media. Lauzon is unable to walk without assistance and the fight with Cerrone has been called off for a second time.

Cerrone and Lauzon were originally supposed to take place at a UFC Fight Night on April 30 before being rescheduled for UFC 274. On fight day, the fight was canceled after Cerrone suffered from food poisoning just hours before the event.

It’s uncertain if the UFC will opt to attempt to book the Cerrone/Lauzon fight for a third time or if they’ll move on with different opponents for both fighters. UFC President Dana White has previously said that the loser of Cerrone vs. Lauzon should “ride off into the sunset” and retire.

Cerrone last fought in May 2021 against short-notice replacement Alex Morono. He lost via first-round TKO after being originally scheduled to face fellow veteran Diego Sanchez.

Cerrone has since competed in grappling bouts against world-renowned jiu-jitsu practitioner Craig Jones and UFC colleague Joe Solecki.

It’s been a long road for Lauzon, who hasn’t fought since Oct. 2019. He earned a first-round TKO win over Jonathan Pearce at UFC on ESPN 6.

UFC Austin is headlined by a featherweight matchup between Calvin Kattar and Josh Emmett and co-headlined by a welterweight clash between Kevin Holland and Tim Means.

Joe Lauzon is focused heading into his matchup with Donald Cerrone, but the longtime UFC veteran admits that he had some reservations about accepting the fight.

“J-Lau” last appeared when he finished Jonathan Pearce via ground and pound in 2019. He’ll face fellow veteran Donald Cerrone in the co-main event of UFC Austin tonight, but Lauzon admitted at the event’s media day that he had some things to consider before accepting the matchup.

“Right away, I didn’t know if I even wanted to do it,” Lauzon said. “Honestly, like my last fight was in Boston and was picture perfect. It’d be the perfect last fight ever. I fought at home, I fought a kid that’s really good, I came out unscathed. Just like, flawless victory, like everything about the fight was perfect. And then we’re close to two years until the next fight. And now it’s like – it was a fight I was excited for – but then it didn’t work out, for whatever reason it didn’t happen.”

The matchup with Cerrone was initially rumored for a UFC Fight Night card in April before being moved to UFC 274. Everything appeared to be on track until “Cowboy” was forced to pull out with an illness just hours before the event.

Such a late change would be frustrating for any fighter, but it was even more difficult for Lauzon given that he’s in the latter-stages of his career.

“So it’s like, is [Cerrone pulling out] a sign? Do we not wanna do this? Should we just maybe let this be the end of it? But I was like, it was such a horrible feeling of it being unresolved. We had to settle it, I felt like I had to do it, you know? So at first I was like ‘I don’t know if I wanna do this.’

“But then I thought about it a little bit more and I’m like ‘Okay, no I definitely wanna do this, I definitely wanna settle this out and kinda see how it shakes out.’ Yeah, it’s just weird. I’ve never had a rematch kinda like this, where the fight didn’t happen then you do it again right away.”

The 38-year-old debuted in the UFC all the way back in 2006 at UFC 63. Although he’s never fought for a UFC belt, Lauzon established himself as a fan-favorite and is currently tied with Nate Diaz for the third-most post-fight bonuses in the promotion’s history.

Tonight’s co-main event bout with Cerrone will be Lauzon’s first fight in over two years. “J-Lau” snapped a three-fight losing streak with his win over Pearce in October 2019 at UFC on ESPN 6.
