Two-time bantamweight titleholder Dominick Cruz will return to the commentary booth for the promotion’s first pay-per-view event of 2024.

On Saturday (January 20), the Ultimate Fighting Championship will head to the mysterious land of Toronto, Canada for UFC 297. Emanating from Scotiabank Arena, the event will be headlined by an all-too-personal clash between South African contender Dricus Du Plessis and the reigning and defending middleweight world champion, Sean Strickland.

The co-main event of the evening will serve to crown a new women’s bantamweight titleholder as division veteran Raquel Pennington takes on the streaking Mayra Bueno Silva.

With less than a week to go until fight night, the promotion has not yet released details regarding who will be guiding us through the loaded night of fights. Per a report from MMA Junkie, Jon Anik will be your play-by-play man while Daniel Cormier and Dominick Cruz are set to join him at the desk and lend their unique perspective on the evening’s action. Cruz will take Joe Rogan’s place as the longtime commentator and popular podcaster no longer travels outside of the U.S. for UFC events.

Joe Rogan critiques Colby Covington after UFC 296 he talked so much he didn't look good

Stalwart color-commenator, Joe Rogan has claimed that while in his opinion, former interim welterweight title challenger, Colby Covington is a “master” at irking out his opponents ahead of fight night, that strategy blew up in his face during his UFC 296 title siege against Leon Edwards last month.

Covington, a former interim welterweight champion and now-three-time undisputed divisional title challenger, suffered a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Birmingham technician, Edwards in their UFC 296 title grudge match.

Joe Rogan befuddled by Colby Covington’s UFC 296 display

And receiving mass criticizm after targeting Edwards’ slain father in the pre-fight build-up between the two, Covington’s performance on the mic backed him into a corner against a “sharp” Edwards, and ultimately blew up in his proverbial face.

“Colby (Covington) talked so much sh*t,” Joe Rogan said on his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience. “It was f*cked up. That’s Colby. He’s the master at getting under people’s skin, but I think in that fight it backfired. He didn’t look good.”

“I was impressed with Leon (Edwards),” Joe Rogan explained. “I think that the problem is that Colby fight is Leon. He was so dangerous. He was so sharp. He is so technical on the feet.”

Targeting a slew of fights for his comeback to the Octagon, outspoken Clovis native, Covington has name-dropped the likes of former multiple-time title challenger, Stephen Thompson, as well as unbeaten Irish starlet, Ian Garry – once again poking fun at the Dubliner’s relationship with his wife and manager, Layla Anna-Lee

“There is one guy that is a legitimate cuck and I’ve called him out for that,” Colby Covington said of Ian Garry during a recent interview. “I found out that this had happened, the girls as selling a book called ‘WAG’ – which means ‘wifes and girlfriends’. So, she was promoting that she had a boyfriend and she had a husband. It shouldn’t be allowed, it’s pretty nasty behaviour.”

“He was pretty angry,” Colby Covington explained. “I think he probably wants to settle the differences in the Octagon, and it just so happens, I like to fight in the Octagon,” Colby Covington explained. “So, if it needs to happen one day, I’d be honored to settle that.”

Joe Rogan says Joe Pyfer hits harder than Francis Ngannou

Of all the people you’d suspect of hitting harder than Francis Ngannou, middleweight prospect Joe Pyfer probably wasn’t one of them.

During a recent episode of his popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, the long-time UFC commentator revealed that Pyfer broke the former heavyweight champion’s record on a punch machine an incredible three times.

“That motherf*cker hits so hard,” Rogan said of Pyfer. “We should tell everybody that he broke Francis Ngannou’s record on that punch machine”.

However, according to Rogan’s guest, Sean Brady, the owner of the machine did not want to give Joe Pyfer the record because he “didn’t believe how hard he [Pyfer] was hitting it.”

“He didn’t believe it was real,” Brady said.

In 2018, Ngannou put his power to the test on a PowerKube punch machine. The Cameroonian registered a strike power of 129,161 units.

“Francis Ngannou has the world record for the most powerful punch, his punch is the equivalent to 96 horsepower which is equal to getting hit by a Ford Escort going as fast as it can,” Dana White said of his former fighter. “And it’s more powerful than a 12-pound sledgehammer swung full force from overhead. Holy sh*t!”

Joe Pyfer Goes for his fourth-straight UFC win

We’re not sure if Joe Pyfer can hit with the same power as a speeding automobile, but he’s certainly made a case for himself after scoring impressive back-to-back first-round knockouts against Alen Amedovski and Gerald Meerschaert. He followed up those wins up with a submission victory over Abdul Razak Alhassan in October.

Pyfer returns to the Octagon in February for a clash with Jack Hermansson.

Joe Rogan responds to Katt Williams

Longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan is ready to welcome iconic comedian Katt Williams onto his popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.

While appearing on Club Shay Shay with NFL legend Shannon Sharpe, Williams vented his frustration over never having been invited onto an episode of Rogan’s show.

“If you were a comedian that cussed, you were ridiculed by the mainstream comedy-geist,” Williams said. “That would be like me being on Joe Rogan. Joe don’t want me on there, I need to be on Shannon. Joe got six comedians that never been funny he wants to push out, but that’s really how it is” (h/t BJPenn.com)

Joe Rogan Would Love to Have Katt Williams on JRE

It didn’t take long for Rogan to offer his reaction online, revealing that Williams is one of his all-time favorite comics and that he would love to have the longtime funnyman on his program.

“I love Katt. He’s one of my favorite comics and I’d love to have him on,” Rogan wrote on X. “We talk about him all the time. If he’s down I’ll make it happen.”

Katt Williams has not yet responded to Rogan’s invite.

Rising to prominence in the early noughties, Williams had four successful HBO specials and spawned a film career in the process, appearing in genre favorites including Friday After Next, Norbit, First Sunday, and Scary Movie 5. He also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his appearance on season two of the FX series Atlanta.

Joe Rogan backed for future UFC Hall of Fame induction he has done so much for our sport

Veteran color-commentator, Joe Rogan has been backed to receive a future induction into the UFC’s Hall of Fame as per his play-by-play lead and co-caller, Jon Anik – who claims the podcast host and standup comedian should most definitely land in the hall in the near future.

Rogan, a veteran color-commentator under the banner of the UFC, made his first appearance back in 1997 for the Dana White-led promtoion, calling the action backstage at a UFC 12 event – which featured a headlining bracket between former light heavyweight champion, Vitor Belfort, and Scott Ferrozzo.

Joe Rogan backed for UFC Hall of Fame invitation

A staple in the commentary booth in the time since, Rogan, who had spent extensive time side-by-side with former play-by-play lead, Mike Goldberg, has been backed by current play-by-play lead, Anik – to receive a Hall of Fame induction alongside his fellow callers, ex-champions, Michael Bisping, and Daniel Cormier.

“I wonder if at this point in time, Joe Rogan has like respectfully declined a UFC Hall of Fame invitation,” Jon Anik told MMA Junkie Radio. “It’s an eventuality that Joe Rogan is going to go into the UFC Hall of Fame. I would love for that to happen spontaneously live, on a UFC broadcast. To sit here and talk about that man’s growth and contributions to the growth of MMA would be such a long conversation.”

“He has just done so much for our sport and for so many individuals in it,” Anik continued. “I’m coming up on the nine-year anniversary of my podcast, he’s the only reason I started the f*cking thing. So, Joe Rogan, first-ballot Hall of Famer. I do hope he gets in.”

Featuring at the final Octagon event of last year, Rogan called the action at UFC 296 alongside the above-mentioned, Anik, and Cormier, and will likely continue his vein this year of calling from the booth for flagship events held by the promotion in North America.

Daniel Cormier

UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier has established himself as one of the top voices in all of mixed martial arts.

After building his legacy in MMA, capturing both the light heavyweight and heavyweight world championships, ‘DC’ is now recognized by fight fans the world over as a member of the promotion’s premiere broadcast team.

Though the commentary crew rotates week-by-week, primarily due to Joe Rogan’s busy schedule that prevents him from traveling out of the country, the trio of Cormier, Rogan, and Jon Anik now serve as the primary group of commentators and play-by-play men for the UFC’s biggest events.

“We have become a trio — me, Jon, and Joe — when it comes to pay-per-views, where when you want to feel like it’s a big night, you hear those voices and you see us on the screen,” Cormier told MMA Fighting. “It’s me, Jon, and Joe, and Megan [Olivi] on the reports.

“Megan’s good, she does football and she does the NFL and does all these things, so you know when you’ve got that team that it’s a pay-per-view and it’s a big night. That’s the best.”

When Cormier, Rogan, and Anik are on the call, it’s going to be a special night

The consistent pay-per-view appearances of Cormier, Rogan, and Anik have served as a calling card of sorts, letting fans know that they are in for something truly special that evening.

‘DC’ went so far as to compare their crew, alongside roving reporter Megan Olivi, to the legendary broadcast teams of Monday Night Football.

“When Jon Madden and Al Michaels and those guys were on Monday Night Football, you knew you were watching Monday Night Football, and now you get that with the UFC,” Cormier said.

“When you see Jon, Joe, Megan, and me, you go, ‘OK, it’s going to be a big night.’ That’s great for the UFC.”
