Joe Rogan set for commentary call at UFC 302 for lightweight title fight in New Jersey homecoming

UFC commentator and podcaster Joe Rogan compared former UFC fighter Igor Severino to an animal.

Severino has one fight in the UFC and in the second round, he got disqualified for biting Andre Lima. It was something that was very rare to see. After the fight, Lima got a tattoo of the bite mark and Dana White gave him a $50k bonus for being bit.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience with Action Bronson, Rogan explained the incident and compared Severino to an animal.

“A dude recently bit a dude in the UFC and so the dude got a tattoo of the guy’s bit on his arm, which is hilarious,” Rogan said (via BloodyElbow). “Well, they disqualified the guy he was fighting, and he got the win bonus. I think the dude was trying to take him down, and he couldn’t take him down, and he bit his arm from behind, which is like f***ing so animal! That’s so crazy that people get to that state where they’re aaah f***ing just f***ing like [immitates biting].”

Action Bronson, meanwhile, was concerned about the bite and how deep it was after seeing the photo. But, luckily, Lima was alright.

Dana White Released Igor Severino From UFC

Following the event, and Igor Severino biting Andre Lima in his UFC debut, Dana White immediately released him from the promotion.

“Those were two up-and-coming undefeated fighters,” White said to KevinIole.com. “If you get frustrated and want out of the fight, there are plenty of ways to do it, but the worst thing you can do is bite your opponent. Now, you get cut and lose the biggest opportunity of your life. Not to mention, he’s going to have real problems with the NSAC.”

Severino has had his entire purse taken from the NSAC and will likely be suspended.

The Brazilian is 8-1 as a pro and has not fought since he was DQ’d for biting Andre Lima back in March.

If you passed by Tank Abbott on the street, there’s a pretty good chance you wouldn’t recognize him.

Today, Abbott lives a mostly quiet life, hosting his own podcast called The Proving Ground. But in 1995, he quickly became one of the UFC’s biggest stars courtesy of his balls-to-the-wall style of fighting that provided a plethora of highlight-reel knockouts.

Tank Abbott

Recently, Abbott made an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience to talk about all things UFC, going back to a time when even Rogan himself wasn’t part of the promotion. During their conversation, Abbott spoke about what it was like competing in a time when the sport had no rules and no time limits, how he ended up getting himself kicked out of the UFC, and his issue with iconic MMA referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy.

Tank Abbott went from UFC to WCW

After his fighting career began to fizzle out, Abbott found a new gig by signing a deal with World Championship Wrestling. Initially brought in to capitalize on his status as a legitimate fighter, Abbott’s character was quickly dwindled down to a crazed fan following around 3 Count, a mock boy band stable made up of wrestlers Evan Karagias, Shannon Moore, and Shane Helms—better known by WWE fans as The Hurricane.

Tank Abbott

Abbott continued to fight off and on under a handful of brands, including Strikeforce, PRIDE, EliteXC, and King of the Cage before ultimately retiring in 2013. He never found the same success as he did in the early days of the Octagon, but his merciless approach to the fight game will always be remembered by the fans who have been down since day one.

Newark’s own, Joe Rogan will make his return to the commentary booth this weekend following his recent absence amid the Octagon’s travel to South America, calling the action as part of a three-man team in New Jersey for UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier.

Rogan, a long-time color commentator stalwart under the banner of the promotion, has been sidelined from duties since he called the monumental UFC 300 event back in April in Las Vegas, watching on as light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira rounded out the card with a blistering knockout win over Jamahal Hil.

Joe Rogan can’t wait to see Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury rematch

Like most of the combat sports-loving world, Joe Rogan couldn’t help but rave about the heavyweight showdown between Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk and the UK’s Tyson Fury. Emanating from Kingdom Arena in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, the two boxing titans went toe-to-toe in a critically acclaimed clash that ultimately saw Usyk hand ‘The Gypsy King’ his first career loss.

Immediately following the contest, Rogan took to Instagram, sharing his excitement over the scrap and their all-but-confirmed rematch later this year.

“What a fight! Congratulations to Oleksandr Usyk for winning the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship of the world!” Rogan wrote. “And huge props to Tyson Fury for not just surviving the ninth round but coming back strong. No one recovers from being rocked like Fury. He’s truly got the heart of a champion. I can’t wait for the rematch!”

Joe Rogan calls for MMA ruleset change to benefit grapplers if it's boring tough

UFC commentator Joe Rogan offers an alternative to the current MMA ruleset.

Despite his success in podcasting and comedy, Rogan has stuck around the sport for over two decades. The 56-year-old continues to commentate on American pay-per-view cards and has done an enormous amount of work in terms of promoting the sport.

Joe Rogan does have a particular soft spot for grappling and BJJ, holding a black belt himself the comedian has also been a major factor in the sports massive surge in popularity after discussing it at length during his podcast.

This might be why he believes a rule change should be implemented in order to level the playing field between strikers and grapplers. Talking with the legend Royce Gracie on his podcast, the two discussed the current ruleset.

Joe Rogan calls for change in ruleset

Rogan alleges that the current rules favour strikers over grapplers, citing round time and referee stand-ups as his reasoning.

“The rules are set up much more for strikers than for wrestlers,” Joe Rogan said on his JRE MMA Show with UFC 1 victor, Royce Gracie. “I’ve been talking about this lately. Say you’re a jiu-jitsu guy and you’re fighting in the first round, and rounds are five minutes long and you take the guy down at four minutes and 30 seconds. You only have 30 seconds to work.” (H/T MMA Mania)

“I feel like if a fight should be… Even if you’re going to make it rounds, the fight is the fight. I don’t think someone should be able to get up. I don’t think people should stand you up, ever. I think once a guy takes you down, the fight is on the ground.

“If it’s boring for the audience, tough s—,” Rogan continued. “If you’re on the bottom, get up. And if you can’t get up, tough s—. And if the round ends and the new round begins, I think they should start you right back in the same place.”

Rogan would bring up the option of implementing the old Pride-style rounds that would last ten minutes. He had previously raised this argument during a podcast with Paul Felder

“Well, I think Pride had good rules with a 10-minute was better. I think 10 minutes is better”, Rogan said. “Especially if someone, like, works really hard. Again, 4 minutes 30 seconds you finally take the guy down, now you’re on top. And now you’re trying to set things up, but the bell rings. And then you start standing up again.”

Enjoying a rather long-strecth in the commentary booth as of recent times, with the promotion’s venture outside of North America this weekend for UFC 301 – veteran color-commentator, Joe Rogan will sit out Saturday’s pay-per-view event in Rio de Janeiro, with former lightweight contender, Paul Felder calling the action.

UFC 301, which takes place this weekend at the Farmasi Arena, hosts an undisputed flyweight championship headliner, with defending gold holder, Alexandre Pantoja returning to home soil since landing in the Dana White-led promotion

Hoping to upset the apple cart and the home fans’ night, Australian contender, Steve Erceg looks to follow in the footsteps of fellow Oceanic champions, Robert Whittaker, Israel Adesanya, and Alexander Volkanovski and strike Octagon gold – just four fights deep into his promotional run.

The co-main event also appeals massively to fans globally – but particularly in Brazil, with former featherweight champion, Jose Aldo making his return from an almost two-year retirement, as he draws the surging Jonathan Martinez in a makeshift bout.

And with Joe Rogan electing against travelling to Rio, the above-mentioned, Felder drafts in his place, joining play-by-play lead, Jon Anik – as well as former two-weight champion and Hall of Fame inductee, Daniel Cormier.

As reported by MMA Fighting, Kayrn Bryant also returns as the event’s in-house reporter, and will handle interviews backstage during the Rio de Janeiro card.

UFC 301 marks the promotion’s return to Brazil for the first time since last November’s ‘Fight Night’ billed card in Sao Paulo, with Jailton Almeida turning in a one-sided unanimous decision victory over former title challenger, Derrick Lewis.

The promotion’s most recent event in Rio came in the form of UFC 283 in January of last year, which saw former champion, Glover Teixeira bow out of the sport following a unanimous decision defeat to recent UFC 300 main event star, Jamahal Hill in the pair’s vacant light heavyweight title fight.
