The MMA veteran and former top-ranked UFC contender John Dodson made an impressive debut in RIZIN earlier today. The US-born athlete made quick work of the DREAM and RIZIN veteran Hideo Tokoro. Dodson only needed one minute and forty-three seconds of fight time to finish the bout via knockout.
John Dodson wins via KO in RIZIN debut
‘The Magician’ John Dodson made his RIZIN debut in the competitive flyweight division at 125 lbs. The 5’3″ fighter humorously listed himself as 6’2″ on the TV broadcast. He is a long-time veteran of MMA collecting a record of 23-13 between the UFC, XMMA, King of the Cage, and several other organizations. Most notably, he has faced fighters such as Merab Dvalishvili, John Lineker, Petr Yan, T.J. Dillashaw, and two bouts against ‘Mighty Mouse’ Demetrious Johnson. Currently, Dodson is on a two-fight win streak having both of his 2022 MMA fights, plus a BKFC bout he won via KO.
Hideo Tokoro is a Japanese-born submission grappling athlete. In his 22-year-long career, he has fought from flyweight to heavyweight. Tokoro was a staple of the DREAM organization where he was known as one of the most exciting fighters on the roster. Over his impressive career, he has put together a record of 35-32 against notable fighters such as Kyoji Horiguchi, Masakazu Imanari, Joachim Hansen, Abel Cullum, Brad Pickett, Ivan Menjivar, and UFC 1 winner Royce Gracie, plus even grappled against Wanderlei Silva.
With this notable win, the Jackson-Wink-trained John Dodson is likely to continue climbing the ranks of MMA around the globe. Yesterday on Instagram he promised fireworks, and today he delivered.“It’s time for the real fun to begin. Tomorrow night is nothing but fireworks.”

Former UFC flyweight title challenger, John Dodson claims he likely could have finally struck gold following the trade containing two-time foe, Demetrious Johnson back in 2018, preventing a double-champion reign of the retired, Henry Cejudo.
Dodson, who challenged for undisputed UFC flyweight gold back in both 2013 and 2015, dropped a pair of unanimous decision losses to Kentucky fan-favorite, Johnson, before eventually departing the UFC back in 2020.
In his final Octagon appearance, the New Mexico veteran dropped a unanimous judging loss to the now-#3 ranked bantamweight contender, Merab Dvalishvili, following a 2016 return to the bantamweight limit.
Competing recently in a winning effort over fellow Octagon veteran, Francisco Rivera back in April where he landed a unanimous decision win in New Orleans, Dodson is set to feature at this weekend’s co-promoted event between Bellator MMA and Rizin FF, taking on Hideo Tokoro at the flyweight limit.
John Dodson admits he likely could have taken UFC flyweight gold eventually
Reflecting on his flyweight division departure following his loss to Johnson back in 2015, Dodson claimed he likely could have eventually landed Octagon spoils instead of former duel-weight champion and Olympic gold medalist, Cejudo.
“Looking back on my fight career, I’m one of the best flyweights in the world,” John Dodson said on Rizin FF’s YouTube channel. “Henry Cejudo sealed the 125lbs title after I vacated the division, and that could have been me.”
“I’m seeing myself still being in the top three and being the best flyweight in the entire world,” John Dodson explained. “So I’m going to out there and show the rest of the world that I still can do it.”
Winning The Ultimate Fighter 14 back in 2011 with a finale victory over former two-time bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw, Dodson also holds notable victories over the likes of Jussier Formiga, John Moraga, Manvel Gamburyan, Eddie Wineland, Pedro Munhoz, and Nathaniel Wood, however, his triumph over Dillashaw remains a standout moment for him.
“Knocking out T.J. Dillashaw was a phenomenal thing because I got to ahead and introduce the world to the brutal capabilities that I have and (my) unique personality,” Dodson explained. “Then also the first one with Demetrious Johnson, I went toe-to-toe with the world’s greatest fighter and I looked pretty much equal to him.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

John Dodson, former UFC two-title flyweight world title challenger made his highly-anticipated Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship debut at BKFC 28 last Saturday night.
In the co-main event of the evening, he faced another former UFC standout Ryan Benoit. As the two debutants toed the line, John Dodson came flying off the scratch line with his signature speed on display. In the end, it only took ‘The Magician’ 40 seconds to finish Benoit in spectacular fashion.
Following the victory, John Dodson spoke with MMA Underground about his incredible BKFC debut.
“I told you I was sacrificing these hands non-stop to go ahead and get that victory and I made sure I stayed true to my promise. I went out there and I wasn’t a liar. Everyone kept sitting there going, ‘Well, I don’t know if Dodson’s still got it.’ I showed on Saturday night that I did. I went out there with a very tough opponent who’s seasoned, but as he stepped into the squared circle, I almost called the outcome. My bad. [His] acceptance to that squared circle with me… He realized I was a different breed. A different animal and I showcased why I’m one of the most violent individuals in the world. Not just BKFC, Not just UFC. Just in the world.”
John Dodson was also asked bout the conditions of his hands after his first foray into the world of bare-knuckle boxing.
“So, my hands are fine, they’re just a little swollen. You can see my little left one has a little nub on it, but that’s about it.”
John Dodson Wasn’t The Only Fighter With The Last Name Dodson to Score a Win at BKFC 28
Earlier in the evening, John Dodson’s younger brother Eric Dodson made his BKFC debut against Nick Villar. It only took the younger Dodson 23-seconds to dispatch his opponent in what would be crowned the Knockout of the Night for BKFC 28.
“Well, one of my anxiety and my nerves were off the chain because of the fact that my brother was fighting first, so I had to go corner him. It’s an uncontrollable animal that I know people always like to sit and they’re saying, ‘Oh, yeah, you’re always so cool, calm, collected.’ I was nervous. I was like… Had butterflies [in] my stomach and I watched him go out there and perform and I was like, ‘Oh, hell yeah.’ He’s going out there, got a 23-second knockout. Not only was it a knockout, it was knockout of the night for BKFC. He came out there, did his thing. He looked at me and he said, ‘Hey, you gotta go and beat my time of 23-seconds.”
It took the brothers a combined 63 seconds to secure victories over their respective opponents. Talking about his future with BKFC, John Dodson says that he hopes to fight again before the end of the year, but is open to taking another MMA bout if nobody steps up to face him inside the squared circle.
“My plan is to hopefully… I can fight before the end of the year. I can fight BKFC [or] MMA. Anybody who’s chomping at the bit, who just saw me perform like I did. Everybody pretty much realized the value of what I still got. It’s not like I’m sitting there wondering as if I Anderson Silva where I could possibly be doing something… Fighting somebody that was over the hill as in Vitor Belfort. Belfort was [nothing] less than amazing in his career, but I’m still in my prime. I’m still sitting there my thing and I’m making sure I can make waves from here on out.”
