John Lineker Willing To Fight Zabit Magomedsharipov On Short Notice

Zabit Magomedsharipov might get to fight at UFC 228 after all.

The UFC is currently searching for someone to fight Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC 228.

Initially, Magomedsharipov was to face Yair Rodriguez on the card. That fight had been plagued from the very beginning. Rodriguez was involved in a highly-publicized spat with the UFC. Things got so bad that the Mexican was even released from the promotion.

Rodriguez took issue with the promotion wanting him to fight Magomedsharipov. “El Pantera” wanted a higher-ranked opponent instead. Both sides seemed to smooth things over soon after.

Yesterday (Thurs. August 23, 2018), however, it was announced that Rodriguez had pulled from the fight with an injury. This leaves his Dagestani counterpart without a dance partner for Dallas.

Enter John Lineker. The longtime bantamweight challenger has thrown his name in the hat as a potential replacement for Rodriguez. The Brazilian took to Twitter and threw out the challenge:

Magomedsharipov responded to Lineker’s comments. He mentioned that he already called UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby, however, Shelby allegedly claimed Lineker is too small. That’s a fair argument. Magomedsharipov stands at 6’1” compared to a 5’3” Lineker:

Lineker is sitting in a nice position at 135 pounds. The No. 6-ranked bantamweight is coming off back-to-back victories. In his last outing, Lineker scored a third-round knockout over Brian Kelleher at UFC 224.

Magomedsharipov has won 11 straight in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. He entered the UFC in mid-2017 with back-to-back submission wins. In his last Octagon appearance at UFC 223, he defeated Kyle Bochniak via unanimous decision.

It will be interesting to see who the UFC winds up pairing Magomedsharipov up with at UFC 228 – if anyone at all.

John Lineker Wants Top Five Opponent Or Title Fight Next

Following UFC 224, John Lineker has made it clear as to what he would like next…

Heavy handed bantamweight contender John Lineker picked up his second consecutive victory last night, scoring a third-round knockout over Brian Kelleher. The win didn’t come easily, however, as Lineker actually admitted that he was ‘surprised’ by how durable the Long Island native is:

“I sure was surprised,” Lineker told MMAjunkie. “I threw everything I had at him, and he absorbed it all.

“At the end of the first round, I said, ‘What now?’”

With the win, Lineker has now won four of his last five bouts and should be in line for a big fight next. The only problem, however, is that the majority of the fighters ranked ahead of him are tied up.

For example, No. 4-ranked Jimmie Rivera is scheduled to take on No. 5-ranked Marlon Moraes in the main event of UFC Fight Night 131 on June 1 in Utica, New York.

Moving on, No. 3-ranked Raphael Assuncao is set to take on Rob Font at July 7’s UFC 226 from Las Vegas, Nevada, while No. 2-ranked Dominick Cruz has been dealing with an injury and No. 1-ranked Cody Garbrandt is set to rematch champion TJ Dillashaw at UFC 227 in August.

With that being said, options are limited for “Hands of Stone”, but he’s made it clear that he’s interested in a big fight nonetheless:

“Ranked or not ranked, he showed how tough he is,” Lineker said. “He sold the fight very well. I think the UFC will see this fight and will think that I deserve to get a top-five (opponent) and a title shot.”

Who would you like to see Lineker take on next?

Last night’s (Sat., May 12, 2018) UFC 224 from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, ended up being an entertaining night of fights full of violent knockouts and gutsy performances.

The Brazilian crowd was treated to many a victory by their countrymen and women, and Amanda Nunes retained her bantamweight title with a brutal fifth-round stoppage of Raquel Pennington.

A former welterweight continued his ascent up the middleweight ladder with a narrow victory and Mackenzie Dern also shut up all the naysayers who chided her for coming in seven pounds overweight (kind of).

Overall, UFC 224 made for a great night of fights. Let’s take a look at what we’re left with the morning after with the five biggest takeaways from the event.

6. Raquel Pennington Needs New Cornermen

Pennington did her best and hung in there for over four rounds against Nunes, who otherwise dominated the challenger and bloodied up her face.

Despite the damage Pennington accrued as well as her telling her cornermen that she was done, it was the referee who ultimately saved Pennington from more needless damage, ubt not before she absorbed a ton of just that.

It’s the corner’s job to know when to protect a fighter from themselves, as fighters usually will opt to fight on. Pennington actually told her corner that she was done, yet they still sent her out just to get turned into a bloody mess in the fifth round.

”Rocky” really needs to find better cornermen, because the incident could have put her livelihood in peril.
