Last Friday, just hours before the event was set to take place, Coker pulled the plug on the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a hard decision but the Bellator boss paid all the fighters, which […]
John McCarthy loves how Bellator president Scott Coker handled the cancelation of Bellator 241 last Friday. On March 13, the quarter-finals of the featherweight grand prix would conclude in a very solid card. It would be under unique circumstances as there would be no fans or media in attendance. Yet, just hours before the event […]
John McCarthy loves how Bellator president Scott Coker handled the cancelation of Bellator 241 last Friday.
“Here’s a guy that made the hard decision,” McCarthy said of Coker to co-host Josh Thomson on the pair’s Weighing In podcast (via BJPENN.com). “He’s going to lose a lot of money for his company by making this decision. He goes and he makes the decision, pays the fighters all their money, pays the employees their money, and you know what? That’s what a real leader does. A really leader steps up and says ‘this is what’s important for you, your families, your health and safety.’
“He made the hard choice, he made it on his own, he did what was right,” McCarthy added, continuing his praise of Coker. “He handled it beautifully and you’ve got to commend the man for being a leader that he is.”
For John McCarthy, he says the Las Vegas-based promotion was playing a risky legal game by continuing on with events.
“I always look at things in a liability format because that’s my background and I had to work against lawyer all the time,” McCarthy said. “Someone along the way, if they get sick, they’re going to say ‘well [the UFC] made me work’. Then they’re going to pull someone like Dana in and go ‘Mr. White, did you not see the President put the country in a state of emergency?’ He’d have to say yes, I know that. Then it’s gonna be well did you know that Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, NHL Hockey, they all suspended their operations. And around the world, soccer, they suspended theirs because they were worried about people’s health?’ He’s going to have to say ‘yes’ to all of that. Which is going to lead him down a road where he’s going to lose.’”

Former mixed martial arts (MMA) referee John McCarthy does not agree with Brendan Schaub that the best fighters only compete in the UFC.
Earlier this month on the Joe Rogan podcast, Schaub made the claim that the best fighters are not competing in Bellator or ONE Championship, but solely in the UFC.
His thinking was that the competition is at the highest level in the UFC, so it is only natural to believe that the best fighters are with the Las Vegas-based promotion.
However, McCarthy disagrees. Speaking on his “Weighing In” podcast, McCarthy made a comparison using Schaub himself:
“Brendan, you fought in the UFC. Congratulations, that was great,” McCarthy said (via BJ Penn). “You had a couple of good fights. But I can point out fights that he had against guys that beat him that lost to guys outside of the UFC.
“Back when [Schaub] was fighting, if they had brought Fedor Emelianenko over, because Brendan is a UFC fighter he’s better than Fedor Emelianenko? He’s going to win? Does that make sense? You’re a UFC fighter, you’re better? It just doesn’t add up.”
Although it should be noted that McCarthy is currently contracted to Bellator as a commentator and analyst, he does have a point.
Some of the very best fighters compete outside the UFC such as Eddie Alvarez, Demetrious Johnson, Douglas Lima and Gegard Mousasi to name a few.

Former referee turned Bellator color commentator Big John McCarthy believes he knows why Dana White and UFC never do cross promotional shows.
His employers Bellator recently did a cross promotion event with RIZIN on New Years Eve. It proved to be a massive success. Bellator President Scott Coker is a big fan of cross promotion and hopes to do one with the UFC, who for all intents and purposes are not interested in such an event.
Speaking on the Weighing In Podcast with host Josh Thomson, the hall of fame referee explained why White and UFC are against the idea, he said.
“Dana got ripped, and I don’t blame him (for not doing
cross-promotion). Dana got ripped when he was first president of the UFC by
PRIDE in giving over Chuck Liddell to PRIDE and then didn’t get anything back.
He said, ‘I’m never going to do that again.’ And unfortunately, he stuck to it.”
“Now he’s stuck to it to the point where he looks at it like, ‘Why am I going to damage my product if I put a fighter out of my stable up against a fighter from another stable and he loses, it just damages my product there’s no reason to do that.’ I don’t blame him.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
In 2003 Liddell was one of the UFC’s biggest stars when he took part in the PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix. Liddell defeated Alistair Overeem by knockout in the quarterfinals, but then suffered a TKO loss to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in the semi-finals. This defeat on another promotion hurt Liddell’s marketability for the UFC and apparently turned White off the idea of cross-promotion which he hasn’t done since. However, these latest revelations from McCarthy put a new spin on an old story. Unfortunately, it makes the possibility of a UFC/Bellator cross-over event even more unlikely.
Will we ever see UFC and Bellator in a cross-promotion event?
