Israel Adesanya best middleweight of all time over Anderson Silva with UFC 287 win Jon Anik

Israel Adesanya has firmly passed former undisputed middleweight champion, Anderson Silva as the greatest middleweight fighter of all time according to UFC play-by-play lead, Jon Anik – who claims the strength of schedule and second round KO win over Alex Pereira solidify his claims.

Taking main event honors at UFC 287 over the course of last weekend, Adesanya managed to reclaim the undisputed middleweight title with a stunning second round knockout win over defending champion, Pereira.

Forced to return to the middleweight limit for the first time in his professional mixed martial arts career, the Nigerian-Kiwi had dropped his crown to Pereira back in November of last year at UFC 281, suffering a fifth round TKO loss at the Octagon fence.

Rallying and surviving a striking onslaught from Pereira at UFC 287 over the weekend, Israel Adesanya countered at the fence, stopping the Brazilian with a massive right hook counter, sending him to the Octagon canvas.

Heralded for his victory – namely by UFC welterweight Matt Brown following his knockout win, Adesanya, who has been touted as one of the top-5 greatest of all time, has now eclipsed the above-mentioned, Silva as the best middleweight to ever grace the sport.

“In my humble opinion, [the UFC 287 win] cements Israel Adesanya as the greatest [middleweight] of all time,” Jon Anik said on ESPN First Take. “There are people who can still argue Anderson Silva is the greatest middleweight champion of all time, and in terms of the title defenses, that is okay.”

“But, I sit here in 2023, and not just argue for Adesanya’s case as one of the best pound-for-pound guys right now,” Anik explained. “I think he’s the greatest middleweight champion of all time on his strength of schedule, and based on this win.”

Israel Adesanya landed a win over Anderson Silva back in 2019

Sharing the Octagon with former middleweight champion, Silva back in February 2019 in the main event of UFC 234, City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya managed to land a unanimous decision triumph against the former pound-for-pound number one.

Former interim UFC welterweight champion, Colby Covington has doubled down on his recent threats to long-time UFC play-by-play lead, Jon Anik, warning the latter from “coming at the king”.

Covington, the current #2 ranked welterweight challenger and a former interim champion under the promotion’s banner, recently made much-criticized threats to UFC commentator, Anik, claiming that he did not want to see the latter’s children grow up without their father, accusing Anik of taking sides with fellow welterweight contender, Belal Muhammad, accusing him of racism to boot.

Colby Covington expected to fight Leon Edwards at UFC 291 in July

Expected to make his Octagon return this summer, Covington has been pegged to challenge for undisputed welterweight gold against current undisputed champion, Leon Edwards – with reports confirming the promotion are “aiming” to headline a UFC 291 card on July 22. – targeted for London, England, with a title fight featuring Edwards and Covington.

And despite receiving flak from Anik’s podcast guest and Serra-Longo MMA head coach, Ray Longo for his comments, in which he urged Covington to drop his “act” – the Clovis native warned Anik away from taking proverbial sides in the future.
“Mike (Michael Bisping), you know like, I guess Jon (Anik) found out that the stove can be really hoyt, maybe you shouldn’t touch it,” Colby Covington said on Believe You Me. “So, you know, I tell everybody the same thing, when the train’s coming through, you know, you better get off the tracks or you’re gonna get run over… no one’s safe in this business Mike, like everyone that wants to comment and drag me down, they don’t know what I’ve been through.”

“They don’t know how hard I work every day… if you come for the king, the king’s gonna have to have a response,” Colby Covington explained. (Transcribed by MMANews

Ray Longo defends Jon Anik Colby Covington leave the kids out of it idiot UFC

Veteran mixed martial arts head coach, Ray Longo has jumped to the defense of his fellow podcast host, UFC play-by-play lead, Jon Anik – blasting UFC welterweight contender, Colby Covington after the latter fired barbs at Anik during a scathing rant following UFC 286 earlier this month,

Receiving major flak for his comments, Covington, a former interim welterweight champion, claimed he would not like to see Anik’s children grow up without their father, before threatening the UFC commentator, leading to an outpouring of support from fighters under the UFC’s banner and the wider mixed martial arts community.

Ray Longo hits out at Colby Covington in defense of Jon Anik

Notably, Anik’s podcast co-host, the above-mentioned, Longo explained how he no longer cared if Covington was just utilizing an act to drum up interest from fans, calling for the Clovis native – whom he labelled a “complete idiot” to leave kids out of promotional material.

“If I hear one more person say, ‘It’s just an act,’ – stop with it,” Ray Longo said during an appearance on Anik & Longo. “You do have young kids, right? An 11-year-old and a 12-year-old, they don’t have the defense mechanisms to determine if it’s an act or not. So, you can have your f*cking act, but leave the f*cking kids out of it, you’re a complete idiot.”

“… If he had kids – to be even remotely, remotely affected by that, Jon (Anik) – I don’t care if it’s an act or not,” Ray Longo explained, “Get your act together and change it then.”

Himself addressing the threat levelled toward him from Covington, Anik admitted that he was surprised to have been dragged into the former’s rivalry with Belal Muhammad, and explained how he will likely have to address the threat made with his young children in the coming days.

“It’s sort of weird for me to be trust into the middle of all the promotion, right,” Jon Anik said. “And there’s two sides of it, I certainly don’t really feel like there’s any sort of legitimate threat there. But, yes, my 11-year-old daughter, obviously is going to come across that soundbite either on Snapchat or somewhere, and I’m going to have to have that conversation. I think even Colby (Covington) would admit to me privately that he crossed the line.”

Michael Bisping Jon Anik won't be murdered Colby Covington

Since Dana White announced at the UFC 286 post fight press conference that Colby Covington will be getting the next crack at welterweight champion Leon Edwards, there have been a lot of mixed opinions regarding that decision.

Many believe that since Covington hasn’t fought in over a year, no. 3 ranked Belal Muhammad, who’s on an eight-fight win streak (nine fight unbeaten streak), may be the more deserving party of the two.

Jon Anik happens to be one of those people, and he recently had the following to say regarding the matter.

Understand acutely why Colby Covington was the back up but hard not to feel for @bullyb170! 9-fight unbeaten streak. Hasn’t lost in 4plus years. Just KO’d a previously undefeated fighter. The man deserves his respect and I don’t say that b/c he hosts a podcast w/ my twin bro.”

Colby Covington then responded in his recent interview with MMAFighting:

“That guy’s so beyond racist. Everything he does is racist, the guy’s a freaking joke. He’s saying I’m in this position because of my skin color? Because I’m white? Mike that’s clear racism I announced it that the UFC and ESPN need to cut him from the panel. They can’t have a racist on their show. And you know who’s hanging out and who’s socializing with that racist, Jon Anik.

“Jon Anik supports that racism so it’s a freaking joke. And Jon Anik’s supposed to be impartial Mike, he’s supposed to be impartial. He’s supposed to have the headset, he’s supposed to be an interviewer and remain impartial. Don’t be a cheerleader, you don’t wanna be a cheerleader because let down the headset, pick up the pom poms, go on the side and be a cheerleader.

“You wanted to lick my balls in London, but then you wanna go back behind the stage and cheerlead for a racist. So he associates with the racism in Belal Muhammad. And you know, Jon Anik dude, I don’t want your kids to grow up without a dad, just realize you live in Boca (Raton), I live in Miami motherfucker. You’re not too far from me, so you better shut your fucking mouth.

“You poked the bear, now the bear comes after you.”

Belal Muhammad had the following to say in response:

“This guy’s an airhead.

“If he doesn’t have something written down for him to say, if it’s not a script, if it’s not written down by a professional he sounds so stupid. And he’s just drawing for straws trying to grasp at something to make it seem real. And now you’re coming at a guy like Jon Anik, who’s like the nicest guy in the world.

“Any why, because Jon Anik gave you an interview you’re calling him a racist? You’re calling him this, you’re threatening a guy like Jon Anik?

“I told Jon, I texted him, ‘I can’t wait to come to Miami in two weeks.’ Because I’m cornering my teammate Ignacio Bahamondes, and I’m like, ‘I wish I’d see Colby there. And I wish if he even looks at Jon in a certain way of disrespect I swear I’ll walk up to him and slap him right in his mouth.’”

Sharing his thoughts on the situation, UFC color commentator, Michael Bisping played down the potential threat to life of play-by-play lead, Anik by former interim champion, Colby Covington.

“Colby Covington’s threatening to kill Jon Anik, uhh, but he’s not,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “He’s playing the game. Jon Anik, he’s in the clear. He’s not gonna get murdered, he’s not being unprofessional. He’s just stating facts.”

To be fair, many peg Colby Covington to be the next best welterweight after Usman, but he’s been inactive, coming off his win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272.

Muhammad on the other hand hasn’t lost since 2019, and since his no contest with Leon Edwards in 2021, has defeated two different two-time title challengers in Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson, before evening the score with Vicente Luque, and most recently stopping Sean Brady, who was 15-0 going into their fight.

Unfortunately for Muhammad however, Leon Edwards vs Colby Covington is a much bigger fight than Edwards vs Muhammad.

Do you think Colby Covington vs Belal Muhammad will go down in the future?

Former UFC interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington blasts commentator Jon Anik for associating with ‘racist’ Belal Muhammad.

Covington made headlines last week, flying to London to weigh in as a last minute backup for the main event of UFC 286. ‘Chaos’ told reporters that he was called in last Tuesday and made a surprise cameo, weighing in on the Friday – something that had been kept heavily under wraps until his appearance.

Following the main event for which he was cageside, they would show Covington during Leon Edwards’ victory speech in order to cut a promo. Later on that night, UFC President Dana White announced that the American would be next in line for the title.

Colby Covington slams Jon Anik

Following the announcement, Covington has done the rounds in the media in attempt to build the profile of the next fight while leaning heavily into his ‘heel’ persona.

However, it was not Edwards who Covington would take issue with this time. Bizarrely when talking to MMAFighting, the 35-year-old would hammer the UFC’s lead play-by-play commentator, Jon Anik.

“And you know who’s hanging out and associating with that racist? Jon Anik, Covington said. “Jon Anik, you know, supports that racism. He’s [Anik] supposed to be impartial, he’s supposed to have that headset, he’s supposed to be an interviewer, and remain impartial.

You want to be a cheerleader? Let down the headset, pick up the pom-poms, go on the side, and be a cheerleader”, Covington continued. “You wanted to lick my fricking balls in London, but then you wanted to go behind the stage and cheerlead for a racist. So he [Anik] associates with racism and Belal Muhammad.

“Jon Anik, dude, I don’t want your kids to grow up without a dad, just realize you live in Boca, I live in Miami motherf**ker, you’re not too far from me, so you better shut your f**king mouth. You poke the bear, now you get the bear comes after you.”

Prior to the announcement, Muhammad had been a name that had been put forward as another viable candidate for a title shot and has called out and been extremely critical of Covington.
