The unthinkable has happened: Jon Fitch has been finished. And it took Johny Hendricks only 12 seconds to do it on Friday night at UFC 141.
Hendricks landed a huge left hand to Fitch’s jaw that had Fitch falling straight backward, with his head bouncing off the canvas. Hendricks pounced and landed one more huge punch on the ground before referee Steve Mazzagatti stepped in to stop the fight.
It was a stunning upset victory voer Hendricks, who improves to 12-1 and earns by far the biggest win of his MMA career.
“I have a left hand,” Hendricks said. “Everybody’s been counting me out. I knew if I hit him with it I could lay him out.”
Fitch, who falls to 23-4-1, had never been finished in the UFC and hadn’t been finished in any promotion since 2002. Fitch has long been regarded as the No. 2 welterweight in the world behind Georges St. Pierre, but now there’s a new kid on the block: Hendricks, who improves to 12-1, is for real.

LAS VEGAS — This is the UFC 141 live blog for Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks, a welterweight bout on tonight’s UFC pay-per-view from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Fitch (23-3) fought B.J. Penn to a majority draw at UFC 127 in February. Fitch has only lost once (against Georges St-Pierre) in the last eight years. Hendricks (11-1) won both his fights this year against T.J. Waldburger and Mike Pierce.
Round 1: Steve Mazzagatti starts us off, and no glove touch for these two. Fitch tries a little lunging right hand that comes up short. Hendricks comes forward and blasts him with a big left that stiffens Fitch up and drops him to his back. Hendricks jumps on him as Fitch sits up into another punch, and Mazzagatti steps in to stop it. That was quick. The kind of fight where they can show the whole thing rather than highlights. Hendricks parades around the Octagon with a wide grin showing through his beard. He looks just a little bit surprised, too.

Ariel Helwani caught up with Dana White ahead of tonight’s UFC 141 event and he asked the UFC president where about the growing opinion that Jon Fitch is being overlooked in the UFC welterweight title picture. According to White, who says he’s in the mix, regardless of Fitch’s current streak and the fact that he only has one loss and one draw in his past 20 fights, unless he makes some drastic changes to his game, he likely won’t main event on a pay-per-view let alone fight for the welterweight strap any time soon.
“You hear the same thing from everybody about Jon Fitch: ‘If I want to get to sleep and I can’t get to sleep at night, I’ll put in a Jon Fitch fight.’ Whatever you think, Jon Fitch is one of the best 170-pounders in the world. And yes, he’s in the hunt for a title again, but everybody… find one person that will tell you they love a Jon Fitch fight, it’s the most exciting thing they’ve ever seen and they just get so excited for it. So when you say that you have a fight like Cerrone and Diaz on the card and a guy with a record like his is on and people aren’t jumping out of their seats for that fight, I think Jon needs to have a little bit of a… he’s got to be a little honest with himself and have a little bit of a reality check when he talks about stuff like [fighters talking their way into title fights.”

Fitch is really good at keeping a fighter on the ground, and I’ll probably get six or seven comments mentioning “Fitch by blanketing” or “Fitch by bear-hugging.”
Now, though, Fitch gets a taste of his own medicine against another very good and accomplished wrestler in Johny Hendricks.
This fight will definitely test Fitch’s stand-up skills, because even if the fight does make it to the ground, I don’t see Fitch being his normal dominant self.
Fitch’s striking hasn’t really been the talk of the town. In fact, it never has and probably never will be. It isn’t his style, and it doesn’t win him fights. Pretty simple if you ask me.
Hendricks will definitely force Fitch out of his comfort zone in this fight. I do think, though, from his training, that Fitch probably does have the better stand-up, just based on who he trains with.
This might be the moment where fans finally don’t think a Fitch fight is boring, and that will make me happy—especially if Fitch wins.
I really, really, really, really doubt that either fighter finishes this fight. I actually think there is a better chance of an asteroid coming right now and striking me as I write this.
Nope, still here.
Anyway, I think if Fitch will get enough takedowns to win a round or two, he’ll steal the decision from a game Hendricks.
