UFC 141 is starting to take shape with the addition of Jon Fitch versus Johny Hendricks.

Today, ESPN.com first reported that the matchup will take place and the UFC soon confirmed the news via twitter.

Fitch (23-3-1 MMA, 13-1-1 UFC) has been out of action since a disappointing outing against BJ Penn earlier this year, but recently returned to training at American Kickboxing Academy in California.

Despite stating that he preferred to face champions or former champions going forward, UFC officials didn’t grant Fitch his wish.

Instead, he’ll be facing Hendricks (11-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) who wrestled at Oklahoma State University and is on a two-fight win streak.

Hendricks burst on the scene by knocking out Amir Sadollah in his organizational debut at UFC 101.

He followed up that performance with three consecutive victories until suffering his lone professional loss to Rick Story in late 2010.

Since then he’s rebounded nicely with back-to-back wins and now faces the toughest test of his career in Fitch.

Fitch and Hendricks join the previously announced blockbuster matchup of Brock Lesnar verus Alistair Overeem at UFC 141, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena on December, 30.

After trying unsuccessfuly to lobby for a fight against BJ Penn or Nick Diaz last week, Jon Fitch finally has his next date to enter the octagon.

The UFC welterweight contender will return to action for the first time since February when he takes on Johny Hendricks at UFC 141 on December 30.

The UFC confirmed to MMA Fighting that verbal agreements are in place for the bout, which was first reported by ESPN.

Fitch (23-3-1, 1 no contest) last fought Penn at UFC 127 and the two went to a three-round draw. Afterward, they were expected to face off in a UFC 132 rematch, but a shoulder injury derailed Fitch, and he’s been rehabbing ever since.

The draw was the first time Fitch hadn’t won since a UFC 87 championship fight loss to Georges St-Pierre. Since joining the UFC, Fitch is 13-1-1.

Hendricks (11-1) is coming off back-to-back wins over Mike Pierce and TJ Waldburger. He’s won six of his seven UFC bouts.

UFC 141 is set for the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and will feature a main event pitting former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar against newly signed former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem.

Video: Cain Velasquez Says Unlike Fitch and Koscheck, He Would Fight Teammate Daniel Cormier If Necessary

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was interviewed recently by Full Contact Fighter and the UFC heavyweight champion dropped an interesting nugget about a hypothetical fighting situation that could happen one day.

Velasquez says that if push came to shove and he was matched up with his American Kickboxing Academy teammate Daniel Cormier in the future, he would fight him, but only if there were ranking or title implications on the line and that the sentiment is a mutual one he’s spoken about with the wrestling standout.

Maybe Velasquez and Cormier should talk to Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck about how friends fighting friends — which happens a lot in the college and amateur wrestling circuits — isn’t a personal thing. It’s just business.

Recent twitter posts by top welterweights Jon Fitch and BJ Penn have set the blogosphere ablaze today.

Consensus No. 1 contender Jon Fitch has tweeted that he would fight either Diaz or Penn at UFC 137.

Fitch, undefeated in his last six fights, has beaten each and every fighter Dana White has put in front of him except George St. Pierre and BJ Penn.

Fitch fought a heroic but ultimately unsuccessful five-round campaign against the Canadian champion at UFC 87 back in 2008, then fought to a draw with Penn at UFC 127 this past February.

Fitch has been criticized by some for his grinding fighting style, while others feel the UFC has unfairly passed him over for a rematch with St. Pierre.

Penn, who has held UFC championships in the Welterweight and Lightweight division, is known for taking tough fights and actively seeking rematches with those who have beaten or drawn him.  Penn has just tweeted “Dana just offered me a deal I can’t refuse.pretty sure I’m still fighting on Oct. 29th.”

Has a rematch between these two fighters been set?  Will Fitch face GSP again?  Only time will tell.

Twitter Beef of the Day: @jonfitchdotnet Gets Sat the F*ck Down by @bjpenndotcom

(Is there any greater rivalry in world history than .com people vs. .net people?)

Man, I feel bad for Jon Fitch. Fans shit on him for not finishing, the UFC has stopped giving him marquee fights — a public shaming from BJ Penn is really the last thing he needs right now.

Fitch was cleared to resume training last month following his shoulder surgery, which didn’t leave him with enough time to replace Diego Sanchez against Matt Hughes at UFC 135 later this month. However, he claims that he’ll be healthy enough to come in as BJ Penn’s replacement opponent at UFC 137 in October, or as Nick Diaz’s new opponent, whenever Diaz gets out of the doghouse.

However, it doesn’t sound like Dana White is interested in either matchup, so he’s been telling people that Fitch simply won’t be ready to fight in time, which makes things easier on everybody, even if it might not be entirely true. As a result, Penn went on twitter to defecate all over Jon’s best efforts to get a big fight. Ouch, bro.

By the way, Penn followed up this tweet by writing “Dana just offered me a deal I can’t refuse. pretty sure I’m still fighting on Oct. 29th.” Shane Carwin thinks it’s Matt Hughes. Another unfounded rumor names Nate Marquardt as the likely suspect, which would be awesome since they really don’t like each other. This booking-and-replacement merry-go-round is starting to get a little confusing, but we’ll keep you posted when we know more…
