The curious case of ex-light heavyweight champion Jon Jones continued this week, as he stood in an orange jump suit before a judge in a court of law. Having been pulled over by the police just 5 days prior for allegedly drag racing in the streets of New Mexico, Jones had felt the lonesome space of a jail cell for 4 days after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Violating the terms of his probation, worsened to a minor extent by his foul demeanour towards the New Mexico police officer, the 28-year old New York born Jones looked humble in court.

After such a torrid year for ‘Bones’ it was hoped he’d be able to stay on the straight and narrow. Alas the temptation of driving his high powered and modified Corvette was too strong, and we found ourselves once again worrying about Jones being pulled from a title fight. This time around Jones is the challenger and Daniel Cormier the champion, after the UFC stripped the fallen champion following his 2015 hit-and-run. The consensus cry from the MMA community was ‘Please Jon, stop driving.’

So here he stood, before a realistic yet stern judge, who sentenced Jon Jones to an extra 60 hours of community service, driver and anger management courses, and a no-drive before checking with his PO policy. Watch the video of the judge’s ruling and warning to Jon Jones:

“Jon, if you do come back here, it won’t go well”.

Here’s the UFC’s official response to Jon Jones’ latest law worries:

“UFC respects the decision made today by Judge Michael E. Martinez in New Mexico Second Judicial District Court regarding the probation terms of the case involving Jon Jones.”

Which is just about as generic a statement as you’d expect. Should the UFC be putting in extra measures to assure ‘Bones’ makes it to UFC 197 on April 23? Otherwise, we might find ‘DC’ facing a substitute, or worse no opponent in his scheduled third title defense.

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones returns to face his old rival Daniel Cormier on April 23rd, in a strikingly similar scenario to their UFC 182 pairing. The glaring difference here is for the first time in five years, ‘Bones’ is competing as the challenger in a title bout. ‘DC’ won the vacant strap when Jones went all Thelma & Louise mid-2015, submitting Anthony Johnson in a thrilling bout at UFC 187. Now, with the Greg Jackson trained Jones reinstated, the feud between the two has jumped right back in to life.

Some interesting back-and-forth over social media, the ‘unstoppable’ presser and heated confrontations were to be expected, but still provided some highly entertaining moments. Remember just weeks ago this video did the rounds, instantly heightening interest in the pair’s venomous and bitter opposition:

At times it seems that Jon Jones just can’t help himself, but there’s also the opinion that his character is just that well portrayed, and it’s hard to separate theatrics from reality. In the timeline of the UFC light-heavyweight division, Jones is most certainly the dominant force, although he’s a far cry from someone like Chuck Liddell, at least in terms of style. ‘The Iceman’ had a fan pleasing habit of knocking fools out on a regular basis, and exited the sport with a huge following of loyal supporters.

Fights with Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture, Babalu, Kevin Randleman, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Wanderlei Silva and many more made Liddell an obvious hall of fame candidate. Where does his story connects with Jones? Well, the comparison between the two has been made on a regular basis, and ‘The Iceman’ was recently posed an interesting question on how he thought a fight between them would go down. It sparked an instant reaction from ‘Bones,’ and now Bas Rutten has even chimed in on the subject.

Perhaps the biggest rivalry in modern mixed martial arts has been reignited, as Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones stand on the cusp of another meeting in the UFC octagon. Before their first five round war at UFC 182, where Jones was the champion and Cormier the challenger, the two light-heavyweight titans were embroiled in a fierce feud. The madness came to a head when they fought on stage during a wild Las Vegas media day brawl, and was furthered during a hot mic outtake that saw Jones threaten to kill ‘DC’ when they fought.

That was over a year ago now, and the time since has shown a transformation in both men’s careers. ‘Bones’ was stripped of the belt as he dealt with legal issues following a hit-and-run incident in New Mexico, and Cormier won the vacant belt against Anthony Johnson, going on to defend it once against Alexander Gustafsson. The moment Jones was reinstated, it was once again on between the two enemies.

UFC 197 is the venue for the rematch, and MMA fans were treated to yet more crazy antics at the UFC Unstoppable press conference. An off-camera confrontation between Jones and Cormier showed the bad blood still runs deep between them. The official UFC 197 promo trailer has been released, and it’s everything you’d expect for a top level rivalry like ‘DC’ vs. ‘Bones.’

Wow, now that’s how you keep fans interested in a fight! That said, the two rivals gave seen a much more subtle pre fight hype stage than their first fight, but that lead up to UFC 182 clearly took a massive toll on Cormier.

That’s not to say that Jones and Cormier haven’t done their fair share of trolling towards each other though, as they’ve battled back and forth over social media for months now. That said, when you compare it to the vicious and bitter beef they had in late 2014/early 2015, it’s really nothing at all.

Check out Daniel Cormier’s recent interview on FOX:

Is it just me, or does it seem a lot more jovial this time around? Relive the craziness of their first feud right here, thanks for stopping by!
