During Daniel Cormier’s stint as a heavyweight in the Strikeforce GP, there were already rumblings of a rivalry with Jon Jones. At the time ‘Bones’ was the UFC light-heavyweight champ, dominating the division. After dominating Bigfoot and Josh Barnett to win the Grand Prix, ‘DC’ made his UFC debut. Victorious against Frank Mir and Roy Nelson, Cormier made his long-awaited 205-pound debut with a bout against ‘Bones’ in mind. Finally, off the back of an intense feud, Jones and Cormier faced off in January 2015. Although Jones’ hand was raised, this would be the final time he’d make the octagon walk as champion.

When Jones was stripped of the title for his part in a hit-and-run incident, it left a hole in the division. Defeating Anthony Johnson by submission, Cormier finally tasted UFC gold, albeit in the looming shadow of ‘Bones.’ After getting himself right, Jones would win the interim belt at UFC 197, and was again booked to face ‘DC.’ Unfortunately, just days before UFC 200, the troubled ex-champ got popped by USADA. Hit with a one-year ban, Jones’ absence was extended, leaving frustration in his wake.

Cormier Eyes Jones’ Return

Speaking with Colin Cowherd, as quoted by MMAFighting.com, Daniel Cormier discusses Jones’ return. Since his USADA ban is retroactive, ‘Bones’ will be eligible to return this Summer. In terms of whether or not his rival will be ‘clean,’ Cormier says he doesn’t care:

“Honestly, when that whole thing happened in July, I would have fought him two days later. It doesn’t matter. I just want to fight. I’m there to fight and because of our history and – I’m a competitor and I need to get back that. That means so much to me at my core that I’ve got to get it back. My life and career would not be okay if I had to walk away and not share the octagon again with that man.”

Post-USADA Jones

“I’d fight him… If that was the case before, then the guy that I’m gonna fight the next time is not gonna be the same guy I saw the first time because of USADA and the drug testing that we are under now… But yes, I would fight him [even if he were on PEDs]. It doesn’t matter. The competitor in me and my belief in my coaches and my skill, I have to get that back. I can’t live with it.”

UFC 200 is now less than two weeks away, and serves as one of the most highly anticipated cards of the year. The main event pits bitter rivals Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones against each other in a light-heavyweight title unification bout. In continuation of a feud that dates back to ‘DC’s’ Strikeforce days, and includes the UFC 178 media day brawl and ‘death threats’ video, ‘Bones’ and Cormier will tangle in a rematch of their UFC 182 battle. Jones came away from that 2015 meeting with his belt intact, but in just over a year a lot has changed.

After his New Mexico hit-and-run saga saw Jones stripped of the championship, Cormier took hold of the division with a UFC 187 submission win over Anthony Johnson. The two were still beefing hard throughout Jones’ absence, and Cormier defended the belt successfully at UFC 192 before Jones was reinstated by the promotion. Now scheduled for a July 9 do-over, we’ve perhaps seen a toned down version of their contention, at least in comparison to Jones and Cormier’s infamous history.

Jones even recently stated that Rashad Evans is in fact his biggest rival, but there’s someone else out there, who happens to be a UFC referee, that has ‘Bones” attention right now. John McCarthy is that man, as Jones told media during a recent press luncheon that he hopes ‘Big John’ will step down from his refereeing duties for the UFC 200 main event. McCarthy was announced by the Nevada Commission last week to officiate Cormier vs. Jones 2, and the interim boss is not happy. As per MMAFighting.com:

“I would prefer any other referee but him. It’s been a mixture of many things throughout the years,” Jones said. “Just the energy. I don’t feel like we have the best energy. It’s an accumulation of some of the things that happened during some fights and just personal interactions. I just don’t feel as, you don’t need anything stacking up against you when you’re fighting a great fighter like DC.”

“He [officiates] probably once a week somewhere,” Jones said. “For me, this is my life, this is my story, this is my legacy. This is everything to me, and if I don’t agree with his energy that he brings to the fight, if I was him, I wouldn’t want to be a part of it. You know what I mean? If you’re not welcome, why would you even want to be part of someone’s big night who doesn’t want you there. I would say, ‘you know, I’ll back out of this one, I don’t need to be a part of this one.’”

Cormier vs Jones

Cormier himself is no stranger to taking a dislike to a certain style of reffing, as he put in an appeal to have Herb Dean removed as referee from UFC 197. ‘DC’ was originally scheduled to face Jones in the main event before dropping out injured. In an interview with Matt Serra and Jim Norton, the light-heavyweight boss said Jones needs to ‘nut up’ over his issue with McCarthy:

“I think John McCarthy is a guy that is a great referee. He’s a guy that he’s kind of in the fight. You feel like there’s a third guy. Herb will get out of the way. In some instances you need a ref that will just stay out of the way, he’s just there to protect you. But John does interject himself into the fight some with the open hands and certain things that Jones kind of does consistently. So I guess that may be where his complaints come from but I’m not exactly sure.”

“I’m fine with John McCarthy. I would have been fine with Herb Dean again because as a man when I said that about Herb Dean on a conference call, I will tell you I didn’t know that was going out audio to everybody. I thought it was just me talking to the commission. But afterwards…I felt the need to reach out and say, ‘If I have a gripe I should be able to tell it to you.’ So I ended up talking to Herb Dean and he was gonna get one of the commissioners on the phone so that we could discuss everything, so that he could hear my complaint.

“Every referee has something that they do that someone will not agree with…Look April 23rd, if Herb Dean would have been the official I would’ve had to just nut up and deal with it. And that is exactly what Jones is gonna have to do on July 9.” Quotes from MMAFighting‘s Jed Meshew

UFC light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier was slated to return this past Saturday (April 23, 2016) at UFC 197, but was forced off the card with an injury just two weeks prior. His bitter rival and former champ Jon Jones instead faced Ovince St-Preux in the main event of the Las Vegas pay-per-view, defeating him by unanimous decision and winning the interim title in the process. The win set up the inevitable rematch between “DC” and “Bones,” which has been brewing since their first fight back in January 015.

So much has happened in that time, and Jones came very close to serving a prison sentence while Cormier was enjoying the life of the 205-pound champion. Taking on and submitting Anthony Johnson at UFC 187, “DC” would go on to defed once against Alexander Gustafsso while Jones worked out his troubles following the infamous New Mexico hit-and-run.

DC vs. Jon Jones

Cormier’s loss that night on January 3 at UFC 182 left a lot of questions unanswered, and did little to settle the beef between the two light-heavyweight titans. Although there was no question who’d won the fight, it was clearly neither man’s greatest performance. Fast forward to present day, and “DC” said he could’ve easily beaten the “Bones” that showed up against OSP, and suddenly a spot on a huge PPV card had opened up unexpectedly.

Once Conor McGregor was pulled from UFC 200 for refusing to attend his first media obligations for the event, speculation raged as to who would replace ‘The Notorious’ opposite Nate Diaz in the main event. Then Diaz declared he was now ‘on vacation,’ and all of a sudden there’s scope for a big title fight to headline the landmark event. A perfect opportunity for Cormier vs. Jones 2? Yup, and here’s the condition “DC” laid out for taking that spot:

With the super stacked UFC 198 card in Brazil, and also to an extent UFC 199, taking up a whole bunch of the promotion’s top talent, is there really any other option for UFC 200? With McGregor declaring he was back on the card before being shot down by Dana White, the rift between their marquis star and the organization could potentially be growing.

How would you feel about the UFC 200 card if it was headlined by Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 2, and Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar for the interim (or maybe undisputed?) featherweight strap?

The UFC light-heavyweight division faced some complications over the last year and change, continuing up until present day, after a number of different factors impacted the top end of the 205-pound class. First off Jon Jones went in to meltdown, was stripped of the belt and temporarily exiled from the UFC. Daniel Cormier stepped in and filled the slot, then defended the title once, and set himself up for a big rematch with ‘Bones’ at UFC 197. Then came Cormier’s first withdrawal from a professional mixed martial arts bout, as he was injured in recent weeks and forced off the April 23 card.

Now, following the recent trend, the interim light-heavyweight title is on the line between Jones and late substitute Ovince Saint Preux. ‘Bones’ is a massive favorite coming in to their fight, with the betting offices recognizing his calibre as (statistically) the greatest light-heavyweight champion in the promotion’s history. Everyone is so busy talking about UFC 200 as the date for Jones vs ‘DC’ 2, that they seem to be overlooking what’s coming up before that. St. Preux is a dangerous fighter, and has beaten some very tough guys during his time in the UFC and Strikeforce. On top of that, he’s got some serious physical advantages to bring to this interim title bout.

So, what happens if Ovince St. Preux shocks the world and demolishes Jon Jones at UFC 197?

Cormier vs. Jones 2, meet the back burner

Inevitably the rematch that everyone has waited so long for will have to wait. ‘DC’ and ‘Bones’ threw down in January 2015 at UFC 182 after perhaps the fiercest rivalry in the promotion’s history, but the fight left many questions remaining. It seemed as though Cormier’s performance was out of character, or perhaps Jones just made it look that way, regardless it had fans and pundits longing for the second meeting.

Once Jones was embroiled in legal troubles and Cormier took over as champion, there’s been a strange turning of tables. For some reason certain sects of fans are labelling ‘DC’ a fake champion, as if he had something to do with Jones’ reckless behaviour during his New Mexico hit-and-run. All these factors make Cormier vs. Jones 2 a must see spectacle, but OSP could quite easily make it another rematch like Jones vs. Gus 2, one that’s been wanting for a lifetime, but always been out of reach.

Perhaps the biggest rivalry in modern mixed martial arts has been reignited, as Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones stand on the cusp of another meeting in the UFC octagon. Before their first five round war at UFC 182, where Jones was the champion and Cormier the challenger, the two light-heavyweight titans were embroiled in a fierce feud. The madness came to a head when they fought on stage during a wild Las Vegas media day brawl, and was furthered during a hot mic outtake that saw Jones threaten to kill ‘DC’ when they fought.

That was over a year ago now, and the time since has shown a transformation in both men’s careers. ‘Bones’ was stripped of the belt as he dealt with legal issues following a hit-and-run incident in New Mexico, and Cormier won the vacant belt against Anthony Johnson, going on to defend it once against Alexander Gustafsson. The moment Jones was reinstated, it was once again on between the two enemies.

UFC 197 is the venue for the rematch, and MMA fans were treated to yet more crazy antics at the UFC Unstoppable press conference. An off-camera confrontation between Jones and Cormier showed the bad blood still runs deep between them. The official UFC 197 promo trailer has been released, and it’s everything you’d expect for a top level rivalry like ‘DC’ vs. ‘Bones.’

Wow, now that’s how you keep fans interested in a fight! That said, the two rivals gave seen a much more subtle pre fight hype stage than their first fight, but that lead up to UFC 182 clearly took a massive toll on Cormier.

That’s not to say that Jones and Cormier haven’t done their fair share of trolling towards each other though, as they’ve battled back and forth over social media for months now. That said, when you compare it to the vicious and bitter beef they had in late 2014/early 2015, it’s really nothing at all.

Check out Daniel Cormier’s recent interview on FOX:

Is it just me, or does it seem a lot more jovial this time around? Relive the craziness of their first feud right here, thanks for stopping by!
