Fight week is once again upon us, and for the first time in 15 months, reigning pound-for-pound king and former light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones will be competing this weekend (April 23, 2016) in the main event of UFC 197.

After being stripped of his long-held title last April due to legal issues, Jones will return to face No. 6-ranked Ovince St. Preux for the interim 205 pound strap.

St. Preux stepped up on short notice to accept this bout after current champion and bitter Jones rival Daniel “DC” Cormier was unfortunately forced out off of the card with an injury.

Cormier and “Bones” possess one of the deepest rivalries in the sport, and Jones took the first fight, scoring a unanimous decision victory back at January 2015’s UFC 182.

With “DC” now holding the title, the rematch was highly anticipated, leading many to be filled with disappointment when the news of the champion’s setback came out.

Jones, however, recently questioned the seriousness of Cormier’s injury, saying that he’s heard the former Olympian may just be ‘hurt’:

“I wasn’t there in the workout room with him when he got injured, I’ll say. But, there’s been lots of rumors that he was hurt, not injured. And to drop the fight being ‘hurt,’ it just makes no sense. My body, I have aches and little nooks and crannies all over my body, but it’s the cost of being an elite level athlete. You fight through that stuff.” Jones told ESPN.

In the aftermath of the news, Cormier admitted that the apparent injury was a leg injury suffered in training after a kick was checked, a predicament that wouldn’t send him to the sidelines for too long.

Do you buy into Jones’ statements here, or do you think the champion had a legitimate reason for pulling out of the bout?

Former long-time UFC light heavyweight champion and reigning pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones has never been too friendly with law enforcement, having had his fair share of legal issues over the last few years.

With that being said, Jones had yet another run in with the law earlier this month ahead of his highly anticipated return against Ovince St. Preux at April 23’s UFC 197.

“Bones” was pulled over in his home of New Mexico, and cited for ‘drag racing’, an offense he claims he didn’t do. Ultimately, the former champion was handed five tickets, and his now infamous verbal encounter with the officer, which was recorded by the officer’s body camera, has went viral.

Not only that, but Jones was also jailed for multiple days due to a probation violation, although he’s since been freed with no serious consequences.

Now just 12 days out from his return, “Bones” took to his official Facebook page to once again speak on the matter, accusing the officer of ‘racial profiling’:

Officer Brown all over the news in Albuquerque after reporters dig up how many times he has been in trouble for racial profiling in the past. Being a father of biracial children, I’m definitely not one to pull the race card. At the same time, I’m not necessarily surprised about this discovery after the run in I had with him. Having him stand there, look me in the eyes and start accusing me of several things him and I both know I didn’t do made me feel let down by the community, made me feel powerless, he made me feel like what was actually true had no power over him. Now it’s easier for me to understand why so many people hold resentment towards law enforcement. Officer brown almost single-handedly ruined my trust in law-enforcement. The sad thing about it is, I actually went to school for criminal justice, I wanted to be an officer myself. Fortunately I know better than to let one person ruin my views of a whole group. Just glad people are finally bringing light to who I was dealing with that night.

These are some pretty controversial remarks from the man many consider to be amongst the best fighters of all-time, but do you kind of feel for Jones here?

Troubled former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones had his scheduled UFC 197 (April 23, 2016) interim title tilt with No. 6-ranked Ovince St. Preux put into jeopardy when he was jailed last week due to violating his probation standards after receiving multiple traffic violations.

“Bones” was reportedly pulled over by a New Mexico State police officer who claimed that he was ‘drag racing’, a claim that the fighter has repeatedly dubbed as false.

Jones then proceeded to engage in a verbal war with the officer, and eventually ended up with five traffic tickets he felt as if he didn’t deserve.

Luckily for the reigning pound-for-pound king, however, he was released from custody without any serious repercussions, although he will have to appear in traffic court next month (May 11, 2016).

According to FOX Sports, the former divisional kingpin has plead not guilty to the charges.

Jones’ team feels very confident that the fighter will be let off the hook rather easily, and his lawyers actually voiced their disagreement with the tickets last week in court:

“We believe that they are bogus,” she said.

“We believe that he was profiled.”

Despite having his originally scheduled rematch with bitter rival and defending champion Daniel Cormier put on hold after “DC” suffered an injury, “Bones” still has a somewhat risky task on his hands.

While many aren’t considering OSP a serious threat, Jones will be making his return to action after well over a year on the sidelines opposite a powerful and athletic southpaw.

How do you see the bout, as well Jones’ future playing out?

Jon Jones: DC Is An Absolute Coward Who Will Never Beat Me

After an injury forced UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel “DC” Cormier out of his highly anticipated rematch with the returning former king Jon “Bones” Jones at April 23’s UFC 197, it was recently announced that No. 6-ranked Ovince St. Preux would step up to meet Jones for the interim 205-pound strap.

Cormier, appearing on today’s (April 4, 2016) edition of the MMA Hour, discussed his injury, while offering St. Preux the chance to train, all expenses paid, at the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in the lead up to the bout.

Jones, who also appeared on the show, took this offer as a sign of weakness from Cormier, taking the chance to rip the champion in the process:

“Daniel is an absolute coward who will never beat me,” Jones said on The MMA Hour. “And I say that not from an arrogant place. I say that from a place where, me getting my belt back, it means everything to me. That belt right now is a big part of my life. It means everything to me. Me losing to OSP should be the last thing that [Cormier] would want, because if I were to somehow lose, that means he doesn’t get to avenge his only loss.”

Continuing on, “Bones” claimed that Cormier is ‘grateful’ to have pulled out of the fight, once again confirming that Cormier will never get the better of him inside of the Octagon:

“His inviting OSP to his training camp shows me that he’s so grateful that he’s not fighting me in three weeks,” Jones said. “That he’s so grateful that he gets to have one more family photo-op with that belt, because he knows that he’s not going to beat me, especially now with a knee injury. He’s going to be nursing his knee to get back to 100-percent. I’m going to just be getting stronger, better, faster, more rehearsed in my game plan to beat him.

“So, Daniel, man, he’s a mental midget. I’m not worried about Daniel. Obviously him inviting OSP shows that he’s so lucky he’ll be watching from the sidelines and not actually in that cage with me.”

In the end, the pound-for-pound king took to his official twitter account to take one more shot at his bitter rival, framing Cormier as a ‘pu**y’:

In the immediate aftermath of the disappointing news that Daniel Cormier would be forced out of his scheduled rematch with Jon Jones at UFC 197, “Bones” took to his twitter to voice a positive message for the champion and his most bitter rival.

It has since been announced that Jones will remain on the April 23 card, taking on late replacement and No. 6 ranked Ovince Saint Preux.

While “Bones” has made it clear that he appreciates Saint Preux stepping up on short notice, one would have to assume that he’s a bit let down at the circumstances.

The ex-champion was set to make his return to action, and attempt to secure the title he had never technically lost after dealing with a plethora of legal issues over the last year.

Jones and Cormier had also been in the midst of an intense buildup to a rematch a year and a half in the making.

With that being said, it wasn’t surprising to see Jones once again take to his twitter, this time sending a shot “DC’s” way:

A. Jones Tweet

Jones has since deleted the tweet.

Cormier was recently seen on a sneak peak of the UFC’s “Counterpunch” show, saying that he was willing to die in order to topple Jones.

In the end, “Bones” clearly feels as if that wasn’t true.

Thoughts?
