Earlier this week on UFC Tonight, Daniel Cormier said that he was very ‘upset’ with the fact that Jon Jones had failed a drug test prior to their rematch at July 29’s UFC 214 in Anaheim, California. Jones ended up scoring a TKO victory over “DC”, although the result of the fight has since been changed to a no-contest by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

Due to Jones’ troubled history, he’s received a lot of backlash from fans regarding his latest failed test. Cormier, however, took to his official Instagram account today to urge fans to ‘lay off’ “Bones” until the situation has fully played out:

Life can be such a roller coaster. I think sometimes you have to just take a moment and breathe it in. You never know what’s gonna come your way. You try and handle it the best way you can. One thing that has been amazing is the support from you the fans. I have never felt so much love. It’s crazy because this all happened when I lost. Guys now I call upon you to take a breathe, lay off of Jones. Let him and his team figure out what’s going on and what happened. I was down and some may have kicked me but the majority of you showed compassion and love. After the fight Jones showed compassion, regardless of what has happened as humans we must show compassion. Jon is not on this ride alone, remember this man has a family. Let’s respect that. You don’t show ur support for me by hurting others. Again I thank you for ur unbelievable support and I trust that you guys will come thru again. DC ????@layziethesavage

Cormier first did battle back at UFC 182 in Jan. 2015 in a bout that Jones won via unanimous decision. He then, however, failed a drug test for cocaine metabolites. A few months later, he was involved in a hit-and-run accident, stripped of his title, and suspended by the UFC.

Then scheduled to rematch “DC” at UFC 200 in July 2016, Jones was forced to withdraw from the bout just days prior after it was revealed that he had failed a drug test for multiple banned substances.

Prior to UFC 214, it had appeared as if Jones had sorted out his issues, but he’s once again found himself in a whirlwind of trouble. Of course, he’s owed his due process, but because he’s a repeat offender, Jones is now facing a four-year suspension.

How do you expect the situation to play out?

Taking on bitter rival Jon Jones for a second time in the main event of UFC 214 last month, Daniel Cormier once again came up short, this time surrendering his 205-pound title and suffering a third round TKO loss.

Despite the bad blood between the two, Jones has been rather respectful towards Cormier after the fight, and while “DC” feels as if “Bones” is being ‘genuine’, he also admitted that achieving ‘friendship would be very different’:

“I believe he’s being genuine,” Cormier told Kenny Florian in his return to UFC Tonight this week. “I do believe that he is trying to turn over a new leaf. I think he’s trying to show that he’s a different person than he was in the past. With that being said, friendship would be very difficult for us to achieve because of our history. And I’m OK with that, I’ve always said that.”

“We don’t have to be friends. I’ve always respected him for the competitor that he is. I even congratulated him for getting the job done on July 29th. But, in terms of going forward, we will be professional because we have to until the cage door closes again.”

As far as his future goes, Cormier is indeed 38 years of age, but he did have some success against Jones, and it appears as if he’s going to keep on fighting, while focusing on improving:

“It takes time to get over something that’s so big, especially when you unsuccessful in such a big event,” Cormier said. “But, day by day, you get better. You keep fighting, you keep learning that there are things that are much more important than the competition. And you gotta try to get through it.”

“If fighting was a nice ex-girlfriend, she would have allowed (Jones) to walk up, double knee me, and knock me out in ten seconds, but no,” Cormier added, with a laugh. “She had to give me some success before it happened.”

“It was just too easy to just say ‘you know what, don’t let the guy in the fight at all.’ I try to make jokes (but) I need to get better.”

After losing his title via third round knockout in a rematch with bitter rival Jon Jones at UFC 214 last month, Daniel Cormier has remained relatively quiet, and at age 38, his fighting future is somewhat unclear.

His longtime headcoach Javier Mendez, however, doesn’t believe that Cormier is done fighting just yet:

“I’ve been in contact with him every day, he’s fine,” Mendez told the Daily Star.

“He’s at crossroads like every great fighter, you know? Do they continue (or not)? But I’ve got a funny feeling we haven’t seen the end of Daniel, not in the fight world.”

Whether or not Cormier continues to fight is certainly up to him, but either way, Mendez confirmed that “DC” will remain connected to the sport in various ways:

“He’s still going to be commentating and he’s still going to involved as a coach at AKA. He’s the greatest wrestling coach that I’ve ever experienced.”

“So he’s going to be in my life until I’m done. So I haven’t seen the last Daniel.”

“But as a fighter, that’s on Daniel. But I think the world hasn’t seen the last of him either.”

Despite losing to Jones twice, Cormier is still one of the very best fighters in the world. There are still options for him at 205 pounds, or he could even make a jump back up to heavyweight where he began his career and holds an undefeated record.

What do you think Cormier’s next move should be?

Jon Jones Says Gustafsson Rematch An Option – Just Not In NY

After knocking out Daniel Cormier at July 29’s UFC 214 to reclaim the light heavyweight title, Jon Jones called out former heavyweight champion and WWE superstar Brock Lesnar. And while that would certainly be a lucrative fight, it doesn’t seem as if it’ll take place in the near future.

With that being said, Jones is expected to defend his 205-pound strap next, and a rematch with No. 1-ranked Alexander Gustafsson appears to make the most sense. Recently speaking on the topic, Jones admitted that it was an ‘option’:

“Every fight gets my blood flowing,” Jones told MMAjunkie. “I know how important it is to never underestimate anyone. I get up for every one. I think the Gustafsson fight is an option for us right now. We’re just going to wait and see. We’re weighing our options right now.”

Jones and Gustafsson first fought at UFC 165 in Sept. 2013 in a bout that Jones won via unanimous decision, although he was pushed to his limits in an entertaining and unforgettable five round war. More recently, “The Mauler” has picked up back-to-back victories over Jan Blachowicz and Glover Teixeira to land back in title contention.

Having spent the majority of the previous two years on the sidelines, Jones is hoping to compete once more before the end of the year. Given that he’s a native of New York, UFC 217, which will take place on Nov. 4 from Madison Square Garden, seemed like a possible landing spot for his next fight, but he revealed that he has little interest in fighting in New York at this moment:

“To be honest, I love being from New York, but my whole thoughts and dreams of fighting in New York – they’re kind of starting to fade,” Jones said. “Looking at it from a business standpoint, it’s not a really good idea to pay 9 percent to the state of New York off the top just for fighting here. With 9 percent of every $1 million, that will add up real quick.

“I realize people from all over the world are going to watch it, whether it’s in Vegas or Canada or wherever. It would have been great to be the first person to fight at Madison Square Garden, but now that it’s happened and everything … I want to do it eventually, but it’s not something that’s a dream the way it used to be.”

Jon Jones Thinks There Could Be Cormier Trilogy Fight

In the main event of UFC 214 (July 29, 2017), which took place live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Jon Jones scored an impressive third round stoppage victory over Daniel Cormier, reclaiming the light heavyweight title and seemingly ending their bitter rival.

After UFC 214, Jones now holds two victories over Cormier, but in a recent interview with MMAJunkie, “Bones” said ‘there could be a Jones-Cormier 3”:

“I think Daniel is proud of himself for what he’s been able to accomplish. He should have his head high,” Jones said. “At this point, I don’t think it’s much of a debate where he stands in this sport when it comes to me and him. I think it’s a closed chapter. With that being said, I do think he has every right to be proud of his career, and his career’s not over yet.”

“We never know. There could be a Jones-Cormier 3,” he continued. “I know that’s a strong possibility. I know he’s going to be a very hard guy to beat for these other guys. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if I saw him again maybe a year or two from now.”

On the surface, it seems rather unlikely for Jones and Cormier to meet in the Octagon again, but given the scarcity of the light heavyweight division, it could be a possibility down the road.

After the fight, Jones showed nothing but respect to Cormier despite their deep rivalry, and he’s continued to do so in the weeks after the bout. The champion also commented on the fact that “DC” was interviewed inside the Octagon by Joe Rogan after the fight, which some feel shouldn’t have happened:

“I think it is unfair for ‘D.C.’ to be interviewed, but Joe Rogan apologized for it, and his explanation made great sense. He was caught up in the moment, which we all were.” Jones said. “I think it’s unfair for Daniel to be interviewed, but at the same time it is fair to the fans. It is fair to see just the raw emotion that goes into it. This fight has been two years in the making, and people want to hear from Daniel.”

“Even if he’s fresh off a knockout they just want to see how he feels and where he was at. The UFC slogan is ‘as real as it gets.’ It was a very real moment, a moment that I appreciated and I’m sure all the fans appreciated, even though it probably wasn’t the best moment for Daniel.”

Despite their rivalry dating back years, Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones had only met once in the Octagon prior to this weekend.

After scoring a one-sided decision victory over Cormier at UFC 182 in Jan. 2015, Jones ran into a plethora of legal and personal issues that not only forced him to be stripped of his title, but also forced him to spend the majority of 2015 and 2016 on the sidelines.

With that being said, however, the duo finally settled the score in the main event of this past weekend’s (July 29, 2017) UFC 214 from Anaheim, California, as Jones scored an impressive third round TKO victory to reclaim the 205-pound title he had never technically lost.

After scoring such a pivotal victory, Jones was actually able to celebrate with Hollywood star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Check that out, as well as more behind the scenes action with the UFC’s ‘Thrill & Agony’ preview video below:
