Former UFC light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones is currently serving out a year long suspension handed to him by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) due to a failed drug test surrounding his scheduled UFC 200 rematch with Daniel Cormier.

This wasn’t Jones’ first issue outside of the cage, however, as the ex-champion has dealt with multiple legal issues as well as with issues regarding drugs and alcohol. In fact, he recently detailed his troubling history with alcohol to Joe Rogan on the UFC color commentator’s podcast:

“I had this crazy thing that I would do where I would party one week before every fight,” Jones Rogan. “And I did it throughout my whole career. And it was stupid, but it was this mental crutch that I had.”

“I literally would, one week before every fight,” Jones said. “I would go out and I would get blacked out wasted. And my logic was, if this guy were to beat me somehow, I can look myself in the mirror and say, the reason I lost is because I got hammered the week before the fight.”

Jones then referenced one fight, his five round war with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165, where his performance was negatively affected by his questionable habits:

“I trained for the fight, but I definitely had this thing where I felt invincible,” Jones said. “And I did a lot of wild stuff leading up to the fight. I definitely didn’t give it my all. Really partying, drinking, staying up all night.”

Jones’ alcohol issues have certainly cost him more than one performance he wasn’t happy with, and he admits that his relationship with it has never been ‘healthy’:

“My relationship with alcohol was never healthy, and I never went through a period in which I had a mature, healthy, responsible relationship with it.”

Despite the somewhat scary stories Jones shared with Rogan, he did also tell the color commentator that he has been sober for 16 months. The former 205-pound king is eligible to return to action in July 2017.

Dana White Will Not Risk Jon Jones Headlining A Card Again

After being handed a one year suspension by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) regarding a failed UFC 200 drug test, former longtime UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones was stripped by the promotion of his interim 205-pound title. Despite that, it’s likely that Jones will fight for the title upon his return given the scarcity of the division as well as his past accomplishments inside the Octagon, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be headlining an event.

In fact, UFC President Dana White said that he will not trust the former pound-for-pound king moving forward:

“I don’t trust Jon going forward,” White said, according to Luke Thomas of MMA Fighting. “I would never take the risk of headlining a card with Jon Jones again.”

The failed drug test, which forced Jones to withdraw from his scheduled UFC 200 rematch with Daniel Cormier just days prior to the event, isn’t the first issue he’s had outside of the Octagon. After his first bout with Cormier in January 2015, it was made clear that he had tested positive for Cocaine metabolites. He was then arrested on hit-and-run charges in April 2015, forcing him out of a scheduled title fight with Anthony Johnson, and leading the promotion to strip him of his title.

Here’s to hoping Jones can once and for all fix his issues outside of the cage and return to the fight game.

Summing up yet another rocky year for ex-undisputed light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones, the United States Anti Doping Agency decided his fate last night. Banning Jones for one year in the case of his failed UFC 200 pre-fight drug test, the arbitration hearing could certainly have gone better. ‘Bones” defense rested on what he described as a ‘dick pill,’ innocently taken in a recreational form. USADA saw this as ‘reckless’ and ruled for the 12-month sit. Following Yoel Romero’s retroactive six-month sit for tainted supplements, Jones’ suspension could certainly be considered more strict.

Perhaps the troubled interim champion’s past played against him in some respects. After the outrageous New Mexico hit-and-run scandal of 2015, and also the failed pre-UFC 182 drug test, the apparent lenience towards ‘Bones’ seems to be fading away. Whatever the case, providing he can stay whole until then, the division’s greatest talent should be eligible to fight by June 2017. Maybe the additional time away from fighting will do Jones good, or perhaps not, time will certainly tell.

Jon Jones Statement

Responding to the one-year suspension handed down at his USADA arbitration hearing Monday night, Jon Jones released a statement through his PR person. As reported by MMAFighting.com:

“Although I was hopeful for a better outcome in the USADA ruling today,  I am very respectful of the process in which they allowed me to defend myself. I have always maintained my innocence and I am very happy I have been cleared in any wrong doing pursuant to the allegations made that I had intentionally  taken a banned substance. I am pleased that in USADA’s investigation they determined I was “not a cheater of the sport”. Being cleared of these allegations was very important to me. I have worked hard in and outside of the octagon to regain my image and my fighting career and will take these next eight months to continue my training and personal growth both as a man and an athlete. Thank you to all of my fans, teammates, coaches, sponsors  and to the UFC for their continued support.”

“The Comeback”

Once again we find ourselves pondering on the future of arguably the greatest fighter, certainly at 205 pounds, ever to grace the UFC octagon. As we await yet another ‘Jon Jones comeback,’ we hope he can stay out of trouble and in shape for a mid-2017 return. “Bones” is set to have his case judged by the Nevada State Athletic Commission this Thursday November 10.

Fingers crossed!

Once the undisputed UFC light-heavyweight champion, Jon Jones has suffered more than one fall from grace. In recent times especially, ‘Bones’ has faced plenty of adversity. Stripped of the belt for his part in the New Mexico hit-and-run last year, Jones’ future was uncertain, to say the least. Potentially facing jail time, ‘Bones’ was forced to confront his inner demons as the world watched keenly. Finally receiving community service and a fine, the charges against ‘Bones’ blew over. The prodigal son returned at UFC 197, but his comeback was short-lived.

Defeating Daniel Cormier’s replacement, Ovince St-Preux, Jones claimed the interim title on April 23. Leading in to the unification bout at UFC 200, fans held their breath in to fight week, hoping Jon Jones could hold it together. Run ins with the police over some alleged drag racing antics proved to be a minor hiccup, then the unthinkable happened. Struck from the UFC 200 main event on just three days notice, ‘Bones’ became the latest in a long line of high-profile scalps claimed by USADA. The doping agency had found anti-estrogens in Jones’ system in a pre-fight screen. Here began the fallen champion’s latest struggle.

Tainted Supplements

During an emotional press conference in the middle of UFC 200 fight week, the troubled New Yorker claimed he was unaware of the banned substance he was flagged for. After months of waiting, Jones’ attorney finally confirmed this week that his client had indeed taken tainted supplements. The batch of workout products ‘Bones’ had referenced was tested by USADA and found to be contaminated. Similar to Yoel Romero, Jones is likely to receive a much shorter suspension. Should he get a six month retroactive suspension, Jones will be eligible to fight ASAP.

As well as trashing the division this past week, ‘Bones’ took to Twitter to clarify how he made it to the top. In response to criticisms over his failed drug test(s), the Greg Jackson product says steroids never made him, but rather hard work and dedication:

After knocking out Fabricio Werdum to become the undisputed heavyweight champion last May, Stipe Miocic successfully defended his title for the very first time in the main event of UFC 203 this past weekend (September 10, 2016) from his home of Cleveland, Ohio. Despite getting dropped early on, Miocic battled back to score an impressive first round stoppage over longtime veteran Alistair Overeem.

Miocic has a few options for his next title defense, but his name was also recently brought up by former longtime light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones, a man who has teased a jump to heavyweight for quite some time.

Despite currently serving out a temporary suspension that could potentially transform into a two-year suspension, “Bones” said that he’d be the ‘challenge of a lifetime’ for Miocic.
Today (September 13, 2016), Miocic responded to the call out, saying that although Jones is a ‘very nice guy’, he’d be open to fighting him:

“I’ll fight whoever,” Miocic told TMZ. “He’s a great guy, we’ve talked before, very nice guy to me. Like I said, I’ll fight whoever they want me to fight. If they want me to fight Jon, I’ll fight Jon or whoever they want me to fight next — Cain (Velasquez) JDS (Junior dos Santos), (Fabricio) Werdum — I don’t care.”

At this point in time, however, it seems as if Werdum and Velasquez are the leading men for a title shot. Werdum got back in the win column at UFC 203 as well, scoring a decision victory over Travis Browne. Velasquez’s most recent win also came over Browne, as the ex-champion knocked out “Hapa” in the first round of their UFC 200 bout.

Who would you like to see Miocic battle next?

Despite his laundry list of issues outside of the cage, former longtime light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones will likely receive an immediate title shot if he avoids a two-year suspension regarding a potential anti-doping violation. Former Jones foe and top 205-pound contender Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson doesn’t see this as fair, however:

“It wouldn’t be fair, giving him a title shot,” Gustafsson said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I’m not saying I’m going to get it. I’m just saying, after everything that happened, it’s not fair to other fighters too, who’ve been working their asses off and they’ve been fighting each other. So, not a title shot right away. Just give him a fun fight first and that’s it.”

Jones is currently serving out a temporary suspension, but he recently hinted that good news could be coming regarding his troubled situation that saw him get pulled from his highly-anticipated grudge match with Daniel Cormier just days prior to July 9’s UFC 200.

Gustafsson, on the other hand, recently got back in the win column with a decision victory over Jan Blachowicz in Hamburg, Germany after dropping two straight to Cormier and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. “The Mauler” admits that he’s unsure what lies ahead for him, but he did say that he would be open to a rematch with Jones, a fight that has been longed for ever since the two took part in an instant classic back in 2013:

“I’m up for suggestions (for my next opponent), so why not?” Gustafsson said. “But let’s see what they say. I’m up for suggestions, so whatever they give me, I’m down with a second fight with Jones, who knows. It’s going to be good though.”

Would you like to see these two light heavyweight stalwarts once again do battle?
