Well, that seems like it went by fast.

One day before the one-year anniversary of him being jailed for violating his probation, troubled former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones is now off probation and a free man.

A Bernalillo County Dustrict Attorney’s Office in New Mexico told TMZ Sports that Jones has successfully completed the sentence and is 100 percent “free and clear” as of today.

The MMA legend was sentenced to 18 months supervised probation after a bizarre hit-and-run accident that left a 25-year-old pregnant Albuquerque woman with a broken arm, after which Jones fled the scene of the crime only to return to grab drugs, paraphernalia, and a large handful of cash before fleeing once again.

Jones was then a wanted man for the next couple days before turning himself in, but his troubles unfortunately didn’t stop there. He was jailed for the aforementioned probation violation after he was ticketed for drag racing and other traffic violations in a controversial traffic stop with a police officer whom many declared was profiling Jones. However, he’s been cleared of the transgression and has apparently completed the terms of his probation that included 72 appearances to help children make good decisions.

“Bones’” awaited return to MMA came against Ovince St. Preux at last April’s UFC 197 after rival and current champion Daniel Cormier pulled out with an injury, but Jones was then forced from their rescheduled rematch at last July’s UFC 200 after failing an out-of-competition USADA drug test, and has been suspended ever since. Added to the hit-and-run and his failed pre-fight drug test for cocaine before his original bout versus Cormier at 2015’s UFC 182, and it’s been more than a rough few years for one of the UFC’s best competitors of all-time.

Today, the formerly dominant pound-for-pound king has cleared another hurdle towards returning to the UFC, but as we’ve seen in recent years, we can only believe that when the cage door closes.

Jon Jones Details Troubling History With Alcohol

Former UFC light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones is currently serving out a year long suspension handed to him by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) due to a failed drug test surrounding his scheduled UFC 200 rematch with Daniel Cormier.

This wasn’t Jones’ first issue outside of the cage, however, as the ex-champion has dealt with multiple legal issues as well as with issues regarding drugs and alcohol. In fact, he recently detailed his troubling history with alcohol to Joe Rogan on the UFC color commentator’s podcast:

“I had this crazy thing that I would do where I would party one week before every fight,” Jones Rogan. “And I did it throughout my whole career. And it was stupid, but it was this mental crutch that I had.”

“I literally would, one week before every fight,” Jones said. “I would go out and I would get blacked out wasted. And my logic was, if this guy were to beat me somehow, I can look myself in the mirror and say, the reason I lost is because I got hammered the week before the fight.”

Jones then referenced one fight, his five round war with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165, where his performance was negatively affected by his questionable habits:

“I trained for the fight, but I definitely had this thing where I felt invincible,” Jones said. “And I did a lot of wild stuff leading up to the fight. I definitely didn’t give it my all. Really partying, drinking, staying up all night.”

Jones’ alcohol issues have certainly cost him more than one performance he wasn’t happy with, and he admits that his relationship with it has never been ‘healthy’:

“My relationship with alcohol was never healthy, and I never went through a period in which I had a mature, healthy, responsible relationship with it.”

Despite the somewhat scary stories Jones shared with Rogan, he did also tell the color commentator that he has been sober for 16 months. The former 205-pound king is eligible to return to action in July 2017.

Jon Jones Responds To One-Year Ban From USADA

Summing up yet another rocky year for ex-undisputed light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones, the United States Anti Doping Agency decided his fate last night. Banning Jones for one year in the case of his failed UFC 200 pre-fight drug test, the arbitration hearing could certainly have gone better. ‘Bones” defense rested on what he described as a ‘dick pill,’ innocently taken in a recreational form. USADA saw this as ‘reckless’ and ruled for the 12-month sit. Following Yoel Romero’s retroactive six-month sit for tainted supplements, Jones’ suspension could certainly be considered more strict.

Perhaps the troubled interim champion’s past played against him in some respects. After the outrageous New Mexico hit-and-run scandal of 2015, and also the failed pre-UFC 182 drug test, the apparent lenience towards ‘Bones’ seems to be fading away. Whatever the case, providing he can stay whole until then, the division’s greatest talent should be eligible to fight by June 2017. Maybe the additional time away from fighting will do Jones good, or perhaps not, time will certainly tell.

Jon Jones Statement

Responding to the one-year suspension handed down at his USADA arbitration hearing Monday night, Jon Jones released a statement through his PR person. As reported by MMAFighting.com:

“Although I was hopeful for a better outcome in the USADA ruling today,  I am very respectful of the process in which they allowed me to defend myself. I have always maintained my innocence and I am very happy I have been cleared in any wrong doing pursuant to the allegations made that I had intentionally  taken a banned substance. I am pleased that in USADA’s investigation they determined I was “not a cheater of the sport”. Being cleared of these allegations was very important to me. I have worked hard in and outside of the octagon to regain my image and my fighting career and will take these next eight months to continue my training and personal growth both as a man and an athlete. Thank you to all of my fans, teammates, coaches, sponsors  and to the UFC for their continued support.”

“The Comeback”

Once again we find ourselves pondering on the future of arguably the greatest fighter, certainly at 205 pounds, ever to grace the UFC octagon. As we await yet another ‘Jon Jones comeback,’ we hope he can stay out of trouble and in shape for a mid-2017 return. “Bones” is set to have his case judged by the Nevada State Athletic Commission this Thursday November 10.

Fingers crossed!

The latest twist in the strange, disappointing Jon Jones saga appears to be heading for a resolution soon.

After claiming that his failed UFC 200 USADA drug test was due to sexual performance medication Cialis, Jones had his case heard before three arbitrators in Santa Monica, California, on Monday (October 31, 2016) according to a report from MMA Fighting, who revealed the proceedings lasted for 10 hours.

A decision has been reached, and Jones’ legal team, led by Howard Jacobs have asked for an expedited decision before the interim light heavyweight champ is scheduled to go before the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) for his official hearing on November 10. Jones is hoping to receive a shortened suspension after failing for anti-estrogen agents clomiphene and Letrozol in an out-of-competition test on June 16, results that canceled his UFC 200 rematch with Daniel Cormier only three days before the awaited bout was set to go down.

Jones now relies on the tainted supplement defense, the current go-to for USADA-failing fighters that has gained Yoel Romero and Tim Means six-month suspensions in the early days of USADA’s new partnership with the UFC. But Jones was the first fighter to go to arbitration with USADA, and is undoubtedly the most high-profile UFC fighter to run afoul of the acclaimed testing company thus far.

UFC 135: Jones v Rampage - Press Conference

His suspension will most likely be reduced, but the final result is still very much up in the air according to Jacobs:

“I think the evidence all came in and we’re happy with sort of how the case went and now we’re just gonna wait for the decision,” Jacobs said. “It’s out of our hands now. I don’t want to get into the details, but there was a lot of evidence that was heard and a lot of argument,” Jacobs said. “Think of it like a trial. It’s basically like the same. It just takes more time than you would think.”

So while USADA has show a tendency to reduce suspensions based on supplement use, the NAC has shown to be far more stringent when punishing fighters, evident by their massive fine levied at Conor McGregor for his UFC 202 press conference bottle-throwing incident and their five-year suspension of Nick Diaz for his third marijuana-related offense. But both of those harsh sanctions came from the mind of former commissioner Pat Lundvall, whose stint with the NAC interestingly came to its end yesterday.

With USADA bringing a close to the case, Jacobs hopes the commission will take their findings into account:

“We think that before Nevada hears the case, it would be useful for them to see how these arbitrators analyzed the same facts and [came] to the decision that they’re gonna come to.”

They may or may not, and if history has shown us anything, the NAC tends to do what they want when they want in their hearings, and they rarely waver. Jacobs revealed that he and his team could not reach a viable settlement with USADA on the issue, something that could prove dealing with the NAC even more difficult:

“If we had come to a settlement option that both sides were happy with, we wouldn’t have gone to arbitration.”

The arguments have been presented and the result of Jones’ arbitration is now a waiting game, with even more drama to unfold at the NAC hearing that follows. The dominant but troubled former champion may get a shortened sanction that allows him to fight again sometime early next year, but regardless of this result, it’s going to be on “Bones” to prove he can make it through a fight camp and show up to the Octagon without issues.

It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen arguably the best fighter in MMA history do just that.

Once the undisputed UFC light-heavyweight champion, Jon Jones has suffered more than one fall from grace. In recent times especially, ‘Bones’ has faced plenty of adversity. Stripped of the belt for his part in the New Mexico hit-and-run last year, Jones’ future was uncertain, to say the least. Potentially facing jail time, ‘Bones’ was forced to confront his inner demons as the world watched keenly. Finally receiving community service and a fine, the charges against ‘Bones’ blew over. The prodigal son returned at UFC 197, but his comeback was short-lived.

Defeating Daniel Cormier’s replacement, Ovince St-Preux, Jones claimed the interim title on April 23. Leading in to the unification bout at UFC 200, fans held their breath in to fight week, hoping Jon Jones could hold it together. Run ins with the police over some alleged drag racing antics proved to be a minor hiccup, then the unthinkable happened. Struck from the UFC 200 main event on just three days notice, ‘Bones’ became the latest in a long line of high-profile scalps claimed by USADA. The doping agency had found anti-estrogens in Jones’ system in a pre-fight screen. Here began the fallen champion’s latest struggle.

Tainted Supplements

During an emotional press conference in the middle of UFC 200 fight week, the troubled New Yorker claimed he was unaware of the banned substance he was flagged for. After months of waiting, Jones’ attorney finally confirmed this week that his client had indeed taken tainted supplements. The batch of workout products ‘Bones’ had referenced was tested by USADA and found to be contaminated. Similar to Yoel Romero, Jones is likely to receive a much shorter suspension. Should he get a six month retroactive suspension, Jones will be eligible to fight ASAP.

As well as trashing the division this past week, ‘Bones’ took to Twitter to clarify how he made it to the top. In response to criticisms over his failed drug test(s), the Greg Jackson product says steroids never made him, but rather hard work and dedication:

Former undisputed light-heavyweight and current UFC interim champion Jon Jones again found himself in the boiling pot this year. Following his removal from the UFC 200 main event due to a flagged USADA test, ‘Bones’ had to face the music in a big way. After being scratched from the milestone card on three days notice, Jones addressed fans and media during an emotional presser. The record-breaking UFC champion claimed he was unaware of the substance in his system, stating he must have consumed a tainted supplement.

Having heard this defense many times in the past, some fans were quick to jump on ‘Bones’ while he was down. Similarly to Jones, UFC middleweight contender Yoel Romero claimed his failed test was due to dirty supplements. After some back-and-forth Romero was cleared to fight again after just six months. Romero’s positive test was for a growth hormone, whereas Jones got popped for estrogen blockers, typically used by body builders after a steroid cycle.

USADA Results

During his time on the sidelines, Jones has been typically vocal towards his fellow light-heavyweights. Last fighting against Ovince St-Preux at UFC 197, ‘Bones’ has remained confident in the five months since that he’ll be back soon. If Luke Thomas’ report last night is anything to go by, Jones could well be looking at a comeback within the year. Sounds like Jones is indeed innocent, as the supplement he claimed he took has been confirmed by USADA as containing a banned substance.

Current champion Daniel Cormier faces Anthony Johnson in the UFC 206 main event in Toronto on December 10. Whether or not ‘Bones’ will be cleared by then remains unconfirmed at this stage, but a unification bout will clearly be on the table upon his return. The fierce rivalry with ‘DC’ or the intrigue around a bout with ‘Rumble’ will make fun viewing for Jones’ comeback in either scenario.

The question is, yet again, will Jon Jones be able to hold it together long enough?
