Jeremy Botter: I’m sitting in a suite in the Philips Arena with Clay Guida. The Arena, as the kind gentleman standing outside Ted’s Bison Grill referred to it, is the home of tomorrow night’s UFC 145 card. We spend plenty of time talking about basketball, but I’m not much of an expert on the sport these days. My hometown Rockets just completed an epic failure to reach the playoffs, so we don’t have much to be excited about.

I ask Guida about the main event with Jones and Evans, and if it’s tough for him to see two men who were once his training partners embroiled in such a bitter rivalry.

“It is. Rashad is the guy who brought me to Jackson’s MMA in the first place,” Guida says.

These are the stories we don’t hear much of when we’re discussing Jones vs. Evans and the friendship they once had. How does it affect guys like Guida, who consider both men friends? It’s apparent from reading Guida’s facial expressions that it’s not an easy subject to talk about.

At the core, though, Guida is still a fight fan. We discuss Jon Jones and the world of potential he has. He believes, like I do, that Jones is eventually going to be a force in the heavyweight division. Over the next 18 months or so, he could quite literally become the greatest fighter in the history of the sport. Guida notes Jones’ frame and how, with ten to fifteen pounds of muscle, he could be absolutely terrifying at heavyweight.

One thing is clear: Guida, like everyone else, is a fight fan. And he can’t wait to see the action unfold tomorrow night.

Jon Jones has a knack for leaving people plastered on the canvas.

Unfortunately, it was a teammate this time around.

All it took was one punch from Jones to knock out his training partner during a sparring session at Jackson’s MMA.

After the knockout, Jones kneels down beside his fallen teammate to make sure he’s alright, but head trainer Greg Jackson urges him to finish the round.

“Jon, pop up, you gotta finish the round,” said Jackson.

This video is an excerpt taken out of Jackson MMA’s documentary, The Proving Ground.

What Jones lacks in knockout power, he makes up for in technique and accuracy. This was a solid punch thrown at the right time in the right spot.

Jones’ striking could be key in finishing off Rashad Evans at UFC 145 on Saturday night.

Evans is arguably the best wrestler at 205 pounds, and Jones will likely look to keep the bout upright, where he can utilize his height and reach advantage to best the exchanges.

Is this a preview of Saturday night? If so, who ends up staring at the ceiling?

Video: UFC 145 Weigh-Ins

(Thank God they brought in a tiny white guy to separate two former UFC champions if things got heated.)

With the exception of John Makdessi, who weighed in at 158 pounds and was forced to hand over 20 percent of his purse to opponent Anthony Njokuani, all fighters made weight at this afternoon’s UFC 145 weigh-ins. Jon Jones tipped the scales at the light-heavyweight limit of 205, where Rashad Evans weighed-in just shy at 204. One of the more interesting moments from the event, as noted by our buddy Ariel Helwani, was the stare down between the newly re-signed Miguel Torres and Michael McDonald. Obviously a fan of how the 209 do business, Torres put on his finest mean mug for the pair’s stare down, only to be basically laughed at by “Mayday,” who clearly wasn’t intimidated.

Another thing of note: Despite weighing in just under the heavyweight limit, Ben Rothwell looked to be in way better shape than we’ve seen in the past. Will it help him come fight night? Probably not, but we can all dream.

Full results and the video are after the jump.

Jones vs. Evans: Yeah, This Is a Big Fight Feel

Jeremy Botter: I rarely get goosebumps from weigh-in events. By my account, I’ve attended roughly fifty of these things, and most of them are the same as any other. It’s a chance to grab some photos and some video and perhaps hear a few more words about how this guy is going to beat up the other guy, and vice versa.

And then you have moments like today, when Jon Jones and Rashad Evans stepped on the stage at the Fox Theater. The crowd came alive. Both men were heavily cheered and heavily booed. Evans weighed in, then Jones.

Jones uttered a primal scream, and then calmly walked over and got directly in Evans’ face. They went forehead to forehead before matchmaker Joe Silva – who is playing the role of Dana White while White stays back in Vegas to film The Ultimate Fighter – urged them to walk away. Jones did an about-face and walked to the other side of the stage, but Evans refused to take his eyes off the champ.

This is a big fight. The biggest I can remember in quite some time. And the “story” we’ve heard countless times doesn’t matter any more. What matters? The fact that the two best light heavyweights in the entire world are going to step in the cage and test their skills against each other on Saturday night.

It’s going to be an incredible fight.

As Jon Jones prepares to fight Rashad Evans, the UFC continues to promote the 24-year-old and build him as one of the company’s top stars.

The UFC has released a new promo in anticipation of Jones’ upcoming title bout against Evans at UFC 145.

The trailer features Jones describing what it means to be a UFC athlete and all the expectations that come along with it. The montage also shows footage of fellow UFC fighters like Georges St-Pierre, Vitor Belfort and Junior dos Santos.

Some of Jones’ comments have not sat well with some fans, so in an attempt to sway their opinion, the UFC has packaged a trailer symbolizing the champion’s humble demeanor and hard work as an athlete.

The consensus with Jones is that he could become one of the greatest UFC champions of all time, so the UFC is hoping to capitalize on his charisma and marketability as a fighter

Jones will be making his third title defense against Evans, as the the two light heavyweights are set to headline UFC 145 this weekend at the Phillips Arena.
