Colby Covington Robbed Jon Jones

The blockbuster rivalry between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal will soon come to a head at UFC 272, and things keep getting more interesting.

According to Jorge Masvidal, Covington is a thief, and not only did he rob their coach Dan Lambert for “12 grand”, but he also robbed former light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, in college.

Of course, Lambert isn’t Covington’s coach anymore. But once upon a time, he was, and once upon a time Covington and Masvidal were best friends, as opposed to each other’s greatest enemy.

Colby Covington Robbed Jon Jones, and the story of Covington vs. Masvidal

Speaking to ESPN, Jorge Masvidal would detail Covington’s thievery. (Transcribed by MMA News) “Jon Jones warned me numerous times. Me and Jon Jones weren’t even cool like that. We hadn’t spoken too much. But he sent a couple messages to me via our manager at the time.”

“Like, ‘Man, watch this guy. He stole my clothes. My clothes don’t even fit him. My money, before we left the room, I never talked to him again.’”

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal were once close friends and roommates. “He slept on my couch,” Masvidal has said. But once Covington really started to embrace his “Chaos Covington” persona, a divide started to form between him, Masvidal, and the rest of his gym at American Top Team.

Soon, dislike turned to contempt, and a full-on rivalry bloomed. Masvidal was first angry because Covington allegedly refused payment to his coach.

Colby Covington retaliated by launching a verbal assault on Masvidal, ATT, and its fighters, including the likes of Dustin Poirier and even females like Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Amanda Nunes.

The things Covington has said have grabbed him many headlines, but according to Masvidal, “Chaos” will pay for that at UFC 272.

Dana White Claims Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal May Fight For BMF Belt At UFC 272

UFC president, Dana White has confirmed that the symbolic BMF championship may be up for grabs this weekend at UFC 272 – between former interim UFC welterweight champion, Colby Covington, and current BMF belt holder, Jorge Masvidal.

The title, which was created prior to UFC 244 back in November 2019, is a symbolic championship, which was clinched by the aforenoted, Masvidal courtesy of a third round doctor’s stoppage TKO win over Californian veteran, Nate Diaz at Madison Square Garden.

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal share a distinct rivalry ahead of their UFC 272 main event on Saturday

Despite being billed as a once-off championship by the promotion, speculation rose that Masvidal had eventually dropped the BMF crown to Kamaru Usman following his rematch loss to the Auchi native at UFC 261 back in April, following a brutal second round knockout.

However, according to promotional leader, White, Masvidal still retains the symbolic BMF championship to this day, and during an interview with Pat McAfee ahead of UFC 272 this weekend, hinted that the title may be on the line between the Floridian and Covington.

“You know, we did the BMF title as a one-time thing, it was fun when we did it,” Dana White said. “But, yeah, you’re probably right. I probably should make that belt on the line when there isn’t a world title fight on the line. ‘Cause (Jorge) Masvidal has it, Masvidal has it. Where’s my crew? I don’t know, I don’t know – maybe we do (put the BMF title on the line at UFC 272). Maybe.”

Most recently featuring at UFC 268 back in November at Madison Square Garden, Covington suffered a second career loss to common-opponent, Usman courtesy of a unanimous decision loss to the undisputed welterweight champion.

For Masvidal, his aforenoted April knockout loss to Usman marked his most recent outing under the UFC’s banner, with a UFC 269 pairing opposite Leon Edwards shelved back in December after Masvidal suffered an undisclosed injury.

Masvidal Accuses Covington Of Cowardice In Altercation With Russians

UFC welterweight star Jorge Masvidal has accused bitter rival Colby Covington of being a “coward” when confronted by Russians during the pair’s time as teammates.

This weekend, one of the most heated rivalries on MMA’s biggest stage will boil over into the Octagon. With bragging rights and a place in title contention at stake, the UFC 272 headliner promises to be an apt third PPV main event act for the UFC in 2022, despite the absence of a championship on the line.

While the pair’s name value alone would have made this contest must-see, their history as former friends, roommates, and teammates makes it one of the most anticipated matchups of the year to date and one that promises to produce fireworks inside Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

Given the time they spent together early in their careers, it’s unsurprising Covington and Masvidal have an abundance of information, personal insults, and negative stories to tell about each other.

That’s included accusations of adultery, gambling debts, and conflicting takes on Covington’s ATT departure. Thanks to a recent interview, we can add an interesting altercation with a group of Russians to that list…

Masvidal: Covington Was Such A Coward

While in conversation with ESPN MMA’s Marc Raimondi prior to UFC 272 fight week, Masvidal narrated an instance when Covington’s trash talk and attacks on other fighters appeared to come back to haunt him.

The incident, which Masvidal says took place after their falling out, apparently saw “Chaos” approached and confronted by a group of Russian individuals, who, while not specified, were seemingly part of the ATT roster at the time. “Gamebred” said the exchange came over remarks Covington made about Khabib Nurmagomedov, the legendary former UFC lightweight champion who hails from Dagestan.

According to Masvidal, Covington responded like a “coward.”

“We got a bunch of Russians here. Guess what? Those Russians got him in the bathroom because he was in the sauna, four/five of them. And they told him, ‘You cannot talk like this,’” claimed Masvidal. “He’s like, “No, I’m sorry.’ Apologetic as hell. At the time, we weren’t cool at all. Because he had already ripped off my coach.

“So I was like, ‘I hope they [MUTED] him up. And if he thinks I’m gonna jump in for anything, the only thing I’m gonna jump in is to kick his [MUTED] teeth in,’” added Masvidal. “So I was hoping these Russians were gonna take him out. But he was such a coward. And he’s all like, ‘No, no, no, never again, bro! I’m trying to make my mark. I’m trying to make my brand and my name.’ And they’re like, ‘Don’t disrespect Khabib.’”

Unsurprisingly, UFC 272 fight week is already delivering the level of animosity and bad blood we’ve come to expect from these two. As we move closer to fight night, it’s safe to say the heated back and forth will only intensify.

Who do you think will win this grudge match, Jorge Masvidal or Colby Covington?

Colby Covington has a bold prediction for his fight with Jorge Masvidal.

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal will be facing off in the main event of the upcoming UFC 272 event this weekend. This non-title fight main event is sure to bring hard-hitting action and drama. Already in the lead-up to this event, Covington and Masvidal have been engaging in trash talk. The history between them makes for an added sense of interest from fans.

Because these two men used to train together, they know each other very well. They don’t like each other and have been promising harm on each other for years. Covington is now predicting not only damage to Masvidsal but the end of his career.

“I see a lot of pain. I’m gonna inflict so much pain on Jorge Masvidal he’s not gonna be the same person ever again,” Covington told TMZ Sports. “He keeps talking about a baptism. It’s not gonna be a baptism. It’s gonna be a funeral. It’s Jorge Masvidal’s career-ending funeral. It’s gonna be violent.”

Masvidal has mentioned that he wouldn’t mind taking some extra shots at Covington. Masvidal’s last three wins were all by KO or TKO, but Covington does not go down easy. He has only been knocked out once in his professional career.

There is a chance that this fight goes the distance, and it seems that would be just fine with Covington. However, Covington predicts that the main event is much more likely to contain a historic conclusion.

“And I’m not gonna finish it quick,” Covington said. “I could easily finish it quick because I do it all the time behind closed doors we used to train. But this one, I’m gonna drag it out, I’m gonna make him suffer, and it’ll probably be the first time in UFC history you see a guy in the main event just verbally tap out and say he can’t take no more of a beating.”

Who do you think will be taking home the win at UFC 272, Colby Covington or Jorge Masvidal?

Conor McGregor’s Losses to Dustin Poirier

McGregor hopes to rebound from two losses against his rival “The Diamond” Dustin Poirier.

He already had a 1st round KO win over Poirier at UFC 178 on Sep. 27, 2014, at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, the fight happened at featherweight, and they both had evolved as fighters since their first encounter.

“The Diamond” got his revenge, defeating McGregor by TKO in the 2nd round at UFC 257 on Jan. 24, 2021, on Fight Island in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. While McGregor acted friendly with Poirier before the rematch, he changed his attitude in their last fight.

Before their third fight, McGregor insulted both Poirier and his wife. He also posted a screenshot of Poirier’s wife’s DM request on Twitter, insinuating infidelity. Although the MMA superstar tried to get under his opponent’s skin, Poirier got the last laugh.

At the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Poirier defeated McGregor by TKO in the 1st round at UFC 264 on Jul. 10, 2021. The MMA superstar suffered a broken leg (tibia) during the fight, and the referee ended the fight due to doctor stoppage.

Leg Injury

The injury resulted in McGregor having surgery, which has kept him out of competition. Coach John Kavanagh also shared that McGregor suffered an ankle injury before the third fight with Poirier.

While he isn’t ready for fights yet, the Irishman has recovered from his surgery and walks without assistance. He appeared healthy as he supported his SBG Ireland teammates at Bellator 275 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, on Feb. 25.

He may also be moving up at welterweight for his next fight. McGregor has a history of fighting at welterweight unless his fight has UFC Lightweight Championship implications.

On a two-fight losing streak and ranked ninth at lightweight, it doesn’t seem likely he’ll be close to a championship opportunity.

Possible Opponents for McGregor’s Next Fight

As McGregor prepares to make his UFC return, it’s time to consider possible opponents for the former two-division champion. Although McGregor is UFC’s biggest star, he needs a popular challenger to fight against.

Nate Diaz

UFC fans have anticipated a third fight between McGregor and Nate Diaz as both fighters have a win over the other at welterweight. The rivalry has also created two successful pay-per-view buy rates with UFC 196 and 202.

Although Nate Diaz is on a two-fight losing streak, he impressed fans with his last performance by hurting Leon Edwards at UFC 263 at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on Jun. 12, 2021. Diaz also shared that he wants to stop fighting soon, so the UFC may decide to have the trilogy before he retires.

Dustin Poirier

While Dustin Poirier has two wins against McGregor, fans still wonder what would’ve happened if the injury didn’t occur in their last fight.

McGregor remains confident that he would’ve defeated Poirier at UFC 264 and still has animosity towards his rival. In an interview with Morning Kombat’s Brian Campbell, Poirier also believes their feud isn’t over yet.

“I don’t think so. I don’t think the chapter will ever be closed, said Poirier(h/t Harvey Leonard).

“The Diamond” has teased a move to welterweight after losing to Charles Oliveria for the UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 269 at the T-Mobile Arena on Dec. 11, 2021. A welterweight fight against McGregor adds a different element to a potential bout, as McGregor has more experience in the weight class than Poirier.

It could also benefit Dustin Poirier to adjust to a new weight class against an opponent he’s defeated twice.

Jorge Masvidal

“Gamebred” Jorge Masvidal presents a unique opportunity for the UFC and Conor McGregor.

Masvidal is considered the reigning BMF Champion, although he’s lost twice to UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 251 and 261. Since winning the BMF title, the UFC hasn’t made him defend it. The company may not recognize it as a legitimate championship, but it is an option they can use to promote McGregor’s next PPV main event fight.

Masvidal has shown interest in fighting the Dublin native in the past. UFC President Dana White downplayed a potential matchup and thought Jorge Masvidal was too big for McGregor. However, the UFC could have McGregor challenge “Gamebred” for the BMF Championship.

The company may also have Masvidal and McGregor fight without needing a title. The BMF Champion will compete against Colby Covington in a non-title fight main event at UFC 272 at the T-Mobile Arena on March 5.

Whether Masvidal wins or losses, the UFC has shown faith that he doesn’t need to use the BMF title to sell a PPV. Alongside McGregor, he could create intrigue for fans to want to see them fight.

Another opportunity for McGregor is the possibility of beating a ranked welterweight. “Gamebred” is ranked sixth in the division, and a win for McGregor could make him an instant contender for the UFC Welterweight Championship.

He’s also teased challenging Kamaru Usman for the title and thinks he could be a three-division UFC champion. Beating Masvidal at welterweight gives McGregor options to be a welterweight or lightweight title contender.

When Will Conor McGregor’s Next Fight Be?

It’s unclear what the UFC has planned for the Conor McGregor next fight. Regardless, the UFC star is looking forward to ending his two-fight losing streak and showing that the surgery made him stronger. The company seems to have its PPV schedule planned until June.

Conclusion

Despite his uncertain UFC return, McGregor has plenty of opponents for a comeback fight. However, the MMA superstar will need to get cleared by doctors and resume raining before he can step into the Octagon and score another victory.

MMA News will provide an update when more information is available.
