Regarded as one of the best defensive wrestlers in the division and the entire organization today, former undisputed UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo – has been met with a wrestling challenge from opponent, Merab Dvalishvili ahead of UFC 278, who promises to take the Brazilian off his feet.

Aldo, the current #3 ranked bantamweight contender, is slated to return to the Octagon later this month against surging Georgian grappler, Dvalishvili – in a potential title-eliminator at 135lbs.

Undefeated in his last two Octagon appearances, Aldo has turned in back-to-back, vintage striking displays en route to a pair of dominant decisions wins over both Pedro Munhoz, as well as a December headlining win against Rob Font.

As for Dvalishvili, the streaking wrestling force has seen injuries hamper his recent activity inside the Octagon – with his most recent outing coming back in September where he landed his seventh straight win with a second round ground strikes win over common-foe, Marlon Moraes at UFC 266. The win earned Dvalishvili a post-fight Performance of the Night bonus.

Merab Dvalishvili promises to crack Jose Aldo’s takedown defense stature

Approaching the most high-profile matchup of his Octagon tenure to date, Dvalishvili remains confident that he can find a chink in the takedown defense armor of Aldo – who is revered as one of the promotion’s better defensive wrestlers.

“You guys will see, I’m gonna take him (Jose Aldo) down,” Merab Dvalishvili told The Schmo during a recent interview at Syndicate MMA. “You guys will see – my takedowns is different, I know he defends, he has the most – good defense, like wrestling takedown defense. You guys will see, I will take him down, I think more than three times.”

A victory for Dvalishvili would likely dislodge Aldo from his #3 perch in the division, as well as land the Georgian his eighth consecutive victory. However, given the fact his teammate – Aljamain Sterling, currently resides atop the bantamweight throne, Dvalishvili is not rushing a show at 135lbs spoils.

“Like I said, I don’t care about the title now,” Merab Dvalishvili explained. “I just wanna win against Jose Aldo, I have so much respect for him. And like, that’s all I want. I don’t care for a title shot, for now – especially at 135, like, my brother, Aljamain Sterling, he’s the king of this division.

Sean O’Malley Hopes To Fight For The Title With A Win Over Petr Yan, But Would Take The Backseat For Jose Aldo

Sean O'Malley

Sean O’Malley would like a title shot if he beats Petr Yan, but wouldn’t mind waiting his turn so Jose Aldo could get a shot before him.

O’Malley has a matchup with Yan at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi, and it is by far the biggest challenge of his career. O’Malley has fought some solid competition, but nothing like Yan. Yan is the former UFC Bantamweight champion, but lost the belt by disqualification to Aljamain Sterling the first time they met. The second time they fought, Sterling was able to inch out a decision win that could have gone either way. Sterling’s wrestling was on another level that night, as he was able to control Yan’s back in a body triangle for almost two full rounds.

Aldo on the other hand is on an impressive run in the division as well. If he beats Merab Dvalishvili, a title shot may be in the near future for Aldo. Aldo is on a three fight win streak with wins over Rob Font, Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera, and Pedro Munhoz. Aldo hd recently said that retirement may be around the corner for him, so he is going hard to solidify a title shot.

Sean O’Malley is ok with taking the backseat to let Aldo fight for the belt, considering how big of a legend he is

“Obviously, I haven’t gotten to prove [I belong at the top]. That Pedro [Munhoz] fight didn’t really end the way I wanted it to. But I think I proved I can hang with the top-10 guys. Jumping up to the No. 1 guy, this is a huge test and I believe I will rise to the occasion… One hundred percent [I’ll deserve the title shot]. I think he [Aldo] said he wants to beat Merab and then fight for the title. I wouldn’t mind beating up Petr and then letting Jose fight for the title and then fighting the winner of those two. Jose’s a legend and he deserves to fight for that belt.” ” (h/t MMAFighting)

O’Malley is a special talent, but he hasn’t beaten anyone inside the top 10. His fight against Pedro Munhoz, wasn’t the most spectacular outing he has had, and it surely didn’t end the way he wanted it too. Getting through Yan is no short task, so only time will tell if O’Malley will even get a chance to fight for the belt.

Who do you think will fight for the championship next?

Merab Dvalishvili believes that a switch from bantamweight contention to flyweight contention could be possible if he emerges victorious over José Aldo in his next appearance.

After a long wait, Dvalishvili finally has his return to the Octagon set. The #6-ranked contender impressed last time out, extending his win streak to seven with a memorable TKO victory over the now-retired Marlon Moraes at UFC 266 last September.

But after some minor injuries and a dedicated role in teammate Aljamain Sterling’s UFC 273 camp, the Georgian’s rise has been somewhat stalled due to a lengthy layoff. He’ll look to bring his name back to the surface when he squares off with MMA legend Aldo at UFC 278 in August.

Following the announcement of his return, Dvalishvili spoke with MMA News’ own James Lynch on a variety of topics, including Sterling’s reign and public pay demands, the potential bantamweight arrival of Deiveson Figueiredo, and his new six-fight UFC contract.

One notable admission Dvalishvili made was a potential future at flyweight. “The Machine” finds himself in a unique position at 135 pounds owing to the success of friend and teammate Sterling.

While a victory over Aldo, whom many believe has already earned another shot at gold, would likely be enough to make the Georgian deserving of a title opportunity, he’s made it very clear that he won’t be sharing the Octagon with Sterling.

And although “Funk Master” has revealed plans to defend the belt a few times before moving up to featherweight to allow for Dvalishvili’s own success in the division, the Tbilisi native has offered to go the other way.

Dvalishvili told MMA News that should he add the legendary name of Aldo to his résumé on August 20, a jump into the 125-pound shark tank could await him.

“(Sterling) will be champion as long as he wants. I’m just gonna win this fight, chill, and maybe go (down to) 125,” said Dvalishvili. “We’ll see. I have to win this fight first… I think it’s possible (to make flyweight). I’d have to do tests first, maybe UFC PI can help me, and maybe I will do tests. If I make it, why not?”

With the likes of Figueiredo, Brandon Moreno, Kai Kara-France, Alexandre Pantoja, and Askar Askarov occupying the top positions of what is certainly a developing and exciting weight class, the addition of Dvalishvili would only add to the growth of the flyweight division.

And should the Georgian stall Aldo’s late surge and make the drop, perhaps we’ll be seeing teammates Sterling and Dvalishvili wielding UFC gold together.
