After the success of the UFC’s last trip to Brazil, they are returning again to the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro Saturday night and bringing a stacked card filled with exciting strikers and submission artists. It will be headlined by UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

Aldo will be taking on top contender Chad Mendes, who many consider to be his toughest test to date. In what could be Aldo’s last fight in the 145-pound weight class, he will have to make a statement in his home country and defeat an undefeated fighter in the process.

In the co-main event, former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort will face former welterweight contender Anthony Johnson in a middleweight bout.

Belfort is coming off his first-round knockout victory over Yoshihiro Akiyama, while Johnson was last seen defeating Charlie Brenneman, also by first-round knockout.

During the last UFC card in Brazil, 11 of the 12 bouts ended with a Brazilian emerging victorious. The fighters on this card will be looking to make it perfect this time around.

UFC 142: Live Fight Card Results, Analysis, and Commentary of Aldo vs. Mendes

UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo is 20-1 as a pro fighter, 2-0 in his UFC career with a “Fight of 2011” candidate in his UFC 129 win over Mark Hominick and a UFC 136 win over Middleweight-turned-Featherweight Kenny Florian, and he’s seen by some as…

UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo is 20-1 as a pro fighter, 2-0 in his UFC career with a “Fight of 2011” candidate in his UFC 129 win over Mark Hominick and a UFC 136 win over Middleweight-turned-Featherweight Kenny Florian, and he’s seen by some as the best Featherweight in MMA while others argue that Aldo is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.

However, this Saturday night, Aldo faces a tough task at Brazil’s HSBC Arenain Rio de Janeiro; while he’s going to have 14,000-plus people on his side, he will also have to contest the athleticism, wrestling, strength, and relentlessness of the undefeated Chad “Money” Mendes—and justifiably so.  Some believe that Mendes will in fact be the first man to snap Aldo’s win streak, which dates back to 2005.

Underneath Aldo’s trip home is the debut of who some might call “The REAL Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson” as he steps into enemy territory to combat TUF: Brazil coach and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Vitor Belfort in the explosive co-main event of what promises to be a successful return to Rio and also a successful first card for the UFC’s 2012 schedule.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages and nationalities, with all this and more, Bleacher Report MMA presents UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes, and we’re giving you every hard-hitting moment of the action as seen through the eyes of your “Human Torch of MMA”, Dale De Souza, from the first opening bell to the final official decision of the evening!

After a wildly successful trip to Brazil in August for UFC 134, the fight promotion made a return to that country a priority. That return will take place on Saturday, Jan. 14, when the UFC presents UFC 142, a fight card that will see Jose Aldo put his UFC featherweight crown on the line against Chad “Money” Mendes.

Aldo enters the fight with a record of 20-1, with his only loss coming to Luciano Azevedo in November 2005. Since that loss Aldo has run off 13 consecutive victories, including four WEC/UFC title defenses. Both competitors will enter the Octagon on Saturday after knocking out their last opponents. UFC 142 is set to go down tomorrow night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and it will feature a main event between UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (20-1) and No. 1 contender Chad “Money” Mendes (11-0).

It will be the UFC’s third trip to Brazil and second since August. At UFC 134, 10 of 11 fights ended with a Brazilian emerging victorious. Standout home-country fighters on this card include Aldo, Vitor Belfort, Rousimar Palhares and Edson Barboza.

“I don’t know if there is any more pressure for Jose Aldo being the headline fight,” said UFC president Dana White. “I think, the fact that he is fighting in Brazil for the first time, not only in front of the crowd there in Brazil, which was crazy last time, but the amount of people watching in his home-country. Some guys thrive on that. I think Jose Aldo is one of these guys that this is something that will motivate him.”

Aldo was last seen defending his UFC title for the second time against Kenny Florian at UFC 136. He won a unanimous decision, which was his second in a row. His other title defense came against Mark Hominick at UFC 129.

For this bout, Aldo brought in former UFC lightweight title challenger Gray Maynard in hopes of preparing for the wrestling and takedown ability of Mendes, a former NCAA Division I wrestler. Mendes is 11-0 in his professional MMA career with two UFC wins over Michihiro Omigawa and Rani Yahya.

“Gray Maynard not only has the exact same style as Chad Mendes, but he is bigger and stronger,” White continued. “If Jose Aldo has been fighting off Gray Maynard’s takedowns and getting ready for those nasty takedowns because you know that’s all he is going to see.

“This is a big deal for Aldo, and hopefully, this is going to be the fight that is his breakthrough fight. He’s going to come out and pull out all the stops and be the Jose Aldo that everyone remembers.”

UFC 142 will be available on pay-per-view and feature a main card with Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes, Anthony Johnson vs. Vitor Belfort, Mike Massenzio vs. Rousimar Palhares, Erick Silva vs. Carlo Prater and Edson Barboza vs. Terry Etim.

UFC 142: Pressure on Vitor Belfort and Jose Aldo to Perform in Brazil

According to Espn.go.com, Anthony Johnson and Chad Mendes claim that Vitor Belfort and Jose Aldo are under pressure to perform in the UFC 142 Brazil event, which gets underway this weekend.

“I feel no pressure at all,” Johnson said. “I don’t have to perform in front of my home country. I don’t get nervous about what could happen. I’m just going to do what I do.”

For Belfort, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, this will be his second time fighting in the presence of his home crowd since he last set foot there back in October of 1998, when he TKO’d Wanderlei Silva in the inaugural UFC Brazil event.

Johnson, a former welterweight contender who recently moved up to the 185-lb division due to problems cutting weight, is highly aware of the threat that Belfort poses, but nonetheless is undaunted by the what lies ahead of him in the co-main event.

“Vitor is an amazing athlete, very fast hands and very powerful, and you have no choice but to respect him,” Johnson said. “I’m not afraid, and I’m willing to accept the challenge. I’m just going in to fight. There’s no strategy. It’s what’s called ‘get it done’,” Johnson said.

On the other hand, this will be the first time that Belfort’s compatriot, UFC featherweight champion Aldo, will be fighting in his homeland of Brazil under the banner of the Zuffa-based promotion.

With that being the case, Mendez, a California resident and NCAA Division-I wrestler, senses the expectation to perform rests largely on the shoulders of Aldo when they clash in the main event this Saturday weekend.

Also, as well as harboring thoughts of leaving Brazil victorious, he also feels at ease with regards to the fight itself and the hometown support that will be channeled towards Aldo.

“I have tunnel vision,” the challenger said. “I have that goal of winning that belt. It’s all I’m thinking about. I think I’m going to get booed as it’s Jose’s back yard, and he’s the champion. But I can’t speak Portuguese so I can’t understand what they say anyway. I’m in the zone and there’s not going to be any problem.”

UFC 142 is set for Jan. 14, 2012 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
