UFC featherweight contender Josh Emmett thinks Alexander Volkanovski has cemented GOAT status ahead of his trilogy with Max Holloway.

Volkanovski will face Holloway in a third title fight between arguably the two best all-time featherweights at UFC 276 on July 2. Just a few weeks before, Emmett will face rising contender Calvin Kattar in a UFC Fight Night headliner.

Volkanovski has defeated Holloway twice in the Octagon, once for the belt at UFC 245 and a successful, albeit close title defense against him at UFC 251. He is undefeated in his UFC tenure and his lone MMA defeat came in 2013.

During an exclusive interview with MMA News’ James Lynch, Emmett explained why Volkanovski should be considered the greatest UFC featherweight of all-time entering UFC 276.

“Volkanovski still gets better and better,” Emmett said. “I can play out how Max wins, I can play out how Volkanovski wins. But it’s also hard to go against the champion that is on some 21 or 22-fight winning streak. He’s undefeated in the UFC, beat some of the best guys in the world. So, I think Volkanovski, in my eyes, I think he’s the GOAT, ’cause he’s beaten all the GOAT (contenders).”

On his way to the title, Volkanovski earned wins over the likes of José Aldo and Chad Mendes. He has since defended his belt against Holloway, Brian Ortega, and The Korean Zombie during his reign.

Emmett could be one win away from a title shot following a four-fight winning streak. He’s earned victories over the likes of Dan Ige, Shane Burgos, and Michael Johnson since a loss to Jeremy Stephens in Feb. 2018.

Volkanovski has gone on record as saying that he’s well on track to becoming the featherweight GOAT. While Emmett and Volkanovski could potentially be on a collision course, Emmett won’t hesitate to give credit to the 145lb king.

UFC featherweight Josh Emmett has turned to a familiar name for some help ahead of his main event against Calvin Kattar next month.

In the UFC’s first visit to Austin, Texas since 2018, the 145-pound division will take center stage, with top contenders Emmett and Kattar set to collide in the June 18 main event.

While “The Fighting Farmer,” who is currently ranked #7, will be hoping to continue his momentum from a return victory over Dan Ige last December and extend his win streak to five, “The Boston Finisher” will be looking to maintain his place in the featherweight top five with a second consecutive headlining victory.

Fighting a talent like Kattar would no doubt be a daunting task at any time, not least when he’s coming off a remarkable five-round performance against the highly touted Giga Chikadze, who was unbeaten in the Octagon before meeting the #4-ranked contender.

With that in mind, Emmett is doing whatever he can to prepare for their date in the cage, and that includes calling in the featherweight calvary.

Emmett Turns To Former Opponent For Help

During a recent exclusive interview with MMA News’ own James Lynch, Emmett went into detail about his latest camp and the individuals present to help him prepare for what is perhaps the biggest fight of his career to date.

As well as usual training partner Andre “Touchy” Fili, Emmett has flown in a “Hurricane” to Team Alpha Male. Emmett revealed that former opponent Shane Burgos has been brought into his camp in order to emulate the style and attacks of Kattar.

“I actually flew out Shane Burgos. After we fought — he’s just a good guy. We’ve just connected with texts and talking here and there. And he’s a phenomenal athlete, a great striker,” Emmett told MMA News. “He’s long, he’s big, he has a great jab; just like Calvin. So yeah, him and his brother, I flew them out this week, and we’ve just been working. He’s trying to emulate Calvin’s style.”

Back in June 2020, Emmett and current #14-ranked 145lber Burgos put on a Fight of the Year contender. After emerging victorious on the scorecards following a three-round war, the 37-year-old was left on the sidelines for over a year having torn his ACL.

Now, having returned to the Octagon and the win column, Emmett will next be looking to cement his place in the title conversation with an impressive performance against Kattar on June 18.

Calvin Kattar will be taking on Josh Emmett later this year.

A huge featherweight matchup is targeted for this summer. According to All Access MMA, Calvin Kattar and Josh Emmett will be heading to Texas to meet inside the Octagon of the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.

Emmett will be making his first appearance in the Octagon this year. His last outing was in December when he defeated Dan Ige by unanimous decision at UFC 269. That win was the fourth in a row for Emmett, who now finds himself in the number seven spot in the rankings.

With only one loss in his last seven, Emmett could be on his way to a title shot in the next year or so. With a win over Kattar, who is the number four ranked fighter in the division, Emmett would be in a good position to take on a title contention fight.

However, Kattar is a very dangerous opponent. He is coming off a huge win over rising star Giga Chikadze. His only loss in the last two years has come from former champion Max Holloway. There could be an opening for Kattar in the title picture with a win over Emmett in June.

The featherweight division is somewhat unclear at the top. Champion Alexander Volkanovski is fresh off his title defense against The Korean Zombie and although a likely next opponent would be Max Holloway, that fight has been done twice before.

This Fight Night event taking place on June 18 in Austin Texas does not yet have a main event planned. There are, however, some nice matchups rumored or announced for this card. They are as follows:

  • Calvin Kattar vs. Josh Emmett
  • Julian Marquez vs. Gregory Rodrigues
  • Phil Hawes vs. Deron Winn
  • Roman Dolidze vs. Kyle Daukaus
  • Jasmine Jasudavicius vs. Natália Silva
  • Damir Ismagulov vs. Guram Kutateladze
  • P Buys vs. Cody Durden
  • Cody Stamann vs. Eddie Wineland
  • Court McGee vs. Jeremiah Wells

Josh Emmett Targets Title Eliminator Against “The Korean Zombie”

"The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung, Josh Emmett

UFC featherweight Josh Emmett is hoping his next appearance in the Octagon will be a title eliminator against veteran contender “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung.

Emmett’s surge towards the title stalled last year following his clash with Shane Burgos. While securing a unanimous decision victory over “Hurricane” in a Fight of the Night contest, the 36-year-old was left with an ACL tear that saw him on the sidelines for well over a year.

Having overcome the serious knee injury, Emmett returned to action at UFC 269, the final pay-per-view of 2021. Against tough and gritty contender Dan Ige, Emmett became a useful piece of evidence for those who doubt the existence of ring rust.

After three rounds of preliminary card action, which saw the Phoenix native put his power on full display with a first-frame knockdown, Emmett fell on the right side of a close decision.

Emmett Lays Out Path To The Title

Having cemented his spot just outside the featherweight top five, extended his win streak to four, and reminded the rest of the division of his presence, Emmett is looking to stake his claim for a championship opportunity in 2022.

During a recent interview with The Hannibal TV, Emmett discussed his options moving forward. With most top contenders pre-occupied or coming off a loss, presuming Max Holloway fights for the belt next, the 36-year-old believes there is only one man who can stand opposite him in the cage for a title eliminator.

“The only person that’s in front of me coming off a win, and that’s not booked, is Korean Zombie. So it’s like, that would be awesome to fight Korean Zombie in a title eliminator, and then the winner gets the winner of the trilogy fight (Volkanovski vs. Holloway 3)… Giga (Chikadze) and Calvin Kattar are fighting soon, so there’s no one available in front of me (except Zombie).”

Emmett also revealed some frustration with regards to how the UFC have booked him in the past. Having watched a number of names rise the divisional ladders after receiving opportunities against higher-ranked names, Emmett questioned why he’s always been made to fight down the rankings.

He’s looking to change that in 2022, and says he won’t be fighting a featherweight below him. If the UFC is to heed to those demands, it stands to reason we’ll be seeing Emmett and “The Korean Zombie” throwing bombs inside the Octagon in the coming months.

“I really want a title eliminator, I’ve fought everybody behind me and I’m one of the only guys they only offer fights behind me. Everyone else, they’re not even ranked in the top 15, then they get a fight in the top 10, and then they’re fighting someone in the top five. I don’t really get it. I do not want to fight anyone behind me. I want my next fight to be a title eliminator. There’s only one guy coming off a win that’s available and I would love to fight him.”

After back-to-back victories over Renato Moicano and Frankie Edgar in 2019, Chan Sung Jung saw his immediate title hopes shattered by Brian Ortega in a 2020 main event. But the 34-year-old brawler burst back into the conversation with a headlining decision triumph over Ige earlier this year.

With both Josh Emmett and “The Korean Zombie” coming off impressive decisions against “50K,” it seemingly makes sense to match the pair up for a 2022 showdown.

How do you think a fight between Josh Emmett and “The Korean Zombie” would play out?

Josh Emmett is making his return to the Octagon against Dan Ige.

A featherweight matchup is on deck for the upcoming UFC 269 card. Josh Emmett is looking to make his way back to the top of the division as he takes on rising contender Dan Ige. Both of these men have title aspirations and the skills to get them there with a few good wins over top opponents. The news was first reported by BJPenn.com.

Emmett has been absent from the UFC since June of 2020. In the time since his last fight, Emmett has been recovering from an injury. He has been rehabbing an ACL injury and is now ready to fight again. He is on a three-fight winning streak with his most recent win coming over Shane Burgos at UFC Vegas 3.

Prior to the injury, Emmett was showing that he was one of the most dangerous men in the 145-pound division. He seemed steadfast for a title shot, and even though he has been sidelined, he is still in the number seven spot in the rankings. A good showing against Ige could put him right back where he wants to be.

As for Ige, he is coming off a loss in his last UFC outing. He is 1-2 in his last three despite riding a long winning streak when he first came to the UFC. Sitting at number nine, Ige would benefit from a dominant win over Emmett and continue his move up the rankings.

UFC 269 will be taking place on Dec. 11 live from Las Vegas. The card is set to be headlined by a lightweight title fight between champion Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier.

Who do you think will take home the win when Josh Emmett and Dan Ige meet at UFC 269?

A pair of top 10 featherweight heavy hitters have been added to December’s pay-per-view.

Cole Shelton of BJPENN.com was first to report the news that No. 7 ranked Josh Emmett will be fighting No. 9 Dan Ige on December 11 at UFC 269. A source close to the situation who asked to remain anonymous confirmed the booking to LowKickMMA.

Both fighters would tease the booking as well on Thursday by posting on Twitter.

“”#UFC269 tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10:00 am PST! You might want to grab some…,” Emmett wrote.

Ige would write “Big one” and then follow that tweet up with “pay-per-view.”

Emmett (16-2) has been out of action since his 2020 Fight of the Year contender against Shane Burgos in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN: Blaydes vs. Volkov. Emmett would tear his ACL just seconds into the first round, along with many other injures, including an MCL Sprain.

Emmett has had a very long road back to the octagon with a lot of setbacks with his knee recovery. Nevertheless, Emmett is riding a three-fight winning streak that included a knockout of Michael Johnson and a first-round knockout of Mirsad Bekti?.

Ige (15-4) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to ‘The Korean Zombie’ in his UFC second main event.
