Coenen was set to square off with Julia Budd for the inaugural female featherweight belt, but an injury has knocked Budd out of the contest.

Coenen (23-6) and Dufresne (5-2) will anchor the online coverage of the card on May 20 from the CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho. The bout will now be for the title.

Due to injury, Julia Budd (8-2) has been forced to withdraw from her inaugural Bellator MMA Women’s Featherweight Championship Bout against Marloes Coenen (23-6). As a result, Alexis Dufresne (5-2) will take her place and challenge Coenen during the featured preliminary contest of “Bellator 155: Carvalho vs. Manhoef” at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, on May 20.

The fight joins a card that already features a colossal Middleweight World Championship main event, in which Rafael Carvalho (12-1) defends his belt against the fiery Melvin “No Mercy” Manhoef (30-12-1). In addition, former Bellator MMA featherweight titlist Pat Curran (21-7) will return to action for the first time since June, when he faces the resilient Georgi Karakhanyan (24-5-1) in the card’s co-main event. The last two men to challenge for Will Brooks’ lightweight title, Marcin Held (21-4) and Dave Jansen (20-3) will also be in action. Rounding out the televised portion of the event will be two heavyweight fights, when Dan Charles (10-3) meets Augusto Sakai (9-0) and Joey Beltran (17-12) takes on Chase Gormley (12-5).

A former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion, Marloes Coenen, is riding a two-fight winning streak and undefeated record under the Bellator MMA fray into her bout with Dufresne. “Rumina” began her career winning eight consecutive fights and 13 of her first 14. The 35-year-old has been competing professionally since 2000 and has been an integral part of the progression of women’s mixed martial arts, challenging some of the best that the sport has to offer. Now, it’s back to the drawing board for the Dutch submission specialist when she looks to spoil the Bellator MMA debut of Alexis Dufresne.

The 25-year-old Alexis Dufresne began her career with a blazing start, earning victories in her first five scraps, all of which she ended in the first round. Born in Temecula, Calif., “Sneaky Zebra” has strung together an impressive resume, including three straight first round knockout wins dating back to her 2013-14 seasons and most recently two appearances for the UFC. Dufresne will be making her Bellator MMA debut next Friday and hopes to get back to her winning ways when she fills in for the absent Julia Budd on short notice.

The first-ever Bellator female featherweight champion will be crowned this coming May at Bellator 155, as Marloes Coenen meets Julia Budd.

The bout, set for May 20 from the CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, will not be part of the Spike TV main card. Instead, according to a report by MMAjunkie.com, it will anchor the online prelims before the televised action.

Coenen (23-6) has won both of her Bellator appearances and is 4-1 over his last five. She is a former Strikeforce champion and challenged for the Invicta FC featherweight title, falling to Cris “Cyborg” Justino.

Budd (8-2) is also a perfect 2-0 with the promotion and is on a six-fight win streak overall.

The event features middleweight champion Rafael Carvalho defending his title against Melvin Manhoef.

Bellator Re-Launches Women’s Division, Announces Signing of Marloes Coenen and Julia Budd

The rumors of Bellator signing Gina Carano may have been premature — or totally invented — but the promotion will indeed begin holding women’s fights again, as part of a brand-new featherweight division. According to a press release distributed today, Marloes Coenen and Julia Budd have signed contracts with Bellator, and will fight on a live Spike TV broadcast later this year.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring in two of the best athletes competing in our sport today,” said Bellator President Scott Coker. “We are making a commitment to bring back the female division to Bellator, and feature some of the world’s best in the Bellator cage.”

Bellator began running women’s matches early in its history, with fighters like Jessica Penne, Leslie Smith, Kerry Vera, and Rosi Sexton featured during the promotion’s first season in 2009. The next year, Bellator hosted a women’s strawweight tournament, which saw Zoila Gurgel outpoint Penne, Jessica Aguilar, and WMMA legend Megumi Fujii. But in light of increasing competition from Invicta FC and the UFC, Bellator formally shut down its women’s divisions in August 2013.

Of course, that was during the Bjorn Rebney era. Now that Scott Coker is runnin’ thangs, Bellator will attempt to re-capture some of the success that Strikeforce previously had in promoting female stars Gina Carano and Cris Cyborg. (By the way, the fact that Coker is pushing a new 145-pound division theoretically makes Bellator a more attractive environment for Carano and Cyborg than the UFC, as they wouldn’t have to squeeze into the bantamweight division to compete.)

“After fighting professionally for over 15 years, I am honored to be invited into the Bellator cage,” Coenen said in today’s press release. “Fighting for Bellator brings my spirit back for fighting! It is great to be working together with Scott Coker again as we both have the same vision on fighting. My style is fighting with the objective to knock my opponent out or to submit her. That is exactly what I am planning to do the very first second I step into the Bellator cage.”

Coenen (21-6) hasn’t competed since her TKO loss to Cris Cyborg in their rematch at Invicta FC 6, in July 2013. By comparison, Budd (6-2) is a somewhat unseasoned competitor, but she’s coming off a 4-0 run in Invicta in 2012-2013.

“I’m ecstatic about the opportunity that Bellator is giving the 145 female division and I’m especially excited to be one of the first females to fight for Scott Coker under the Bellator banner,” Budd added in the press release. “This gives me the opportunity to showcase my skills as one of the best fighters in the world on one of the biggest stages in the world.”

Women’s MMA standout Ronda Rousey, who scored a 39-second armbar win, earned $8,000 in her co-headlining bout.

Adlan Amagov was the only fighter to bank five digits with a $5,600 for show purse plus a $5,000 win bonus. Amagov’s opponent Anthony Smith forfeited 20% of his purse to Amagov for failing to make weight.

Official salaries for all 18 fighters on the card are after the jump. Please note that the salaries below are the numbers reported by Strikeforce to the commission and does not necessarily represent a fighter’s final earnings.

Heading into last night, many people were calling Ronda Rousey the new face of women’s MMA. And why not? She is a decorated judoka who has finished all three of her professional fights in less than one minute. Rousey was given a step up in competition against Julia Budd at last night’s Strikeforce Challengers 20.

If you’ve followed Ronda Rousey’s MMA career at all, then you probably knew how the fight would look even before watching it. For those of you who are new to WMMA: Rousey quickly got Julia Budd to the ground. She established mount, and worked for an armbar. Julia Budd tried to fight through it, and got her arm snapped as a result. Total time? Thirty nine seconds. Forget the second round- Ronda Rousey is yet to see the second minute of a professional fight, having armbarred all four of her opponents less than one minute into the opening round.

After receiving confirmation from none other than “Judo” Gene Lebell that her fight lasted only thirty eight seconds, Ronda Rousey got busy calling out Sarah Kaufman and Miesha Tate. Both fights are very interesting for WMMA. Make it happen, Zuffa.

The only fight on the card to end quicker than Rousey vs. Budd was the evening’s main event, Antwain Britt vs. Lumumba Sayers. Sayers caught Britt with a vicious uppercut just twenty eight seconds into their bout. Sayers improves to 5-2, and despite his nickname being “Heavy Hands”, this victory marks his first by knockout. Go figure.
