In a fight with major implications for the future of women’s mixed martial arts, former Olympic judo competitor Ronda Rousey needed just 39 seconds to submit Julia Budd with an arm bar at Friday night’s Strikeforce Challengers event.

Rousey’s ground game is simply on a different level from Budd — and from just about every other woman in the world — and it didn’t take her long to establish that: As soon as she got Budd down, Rousey effortlessly transitioned into mount, then cranked on Budd’s arm and forced her to tap.

“I got tagged a couple more times than I would like to, but I’m stoked,” Rousey said afterward.

Rousey is now 4-0 in her professional MMA career, with all four wins coming by first-round arm bar in less than a minute. Rousey could be a good future opponent for Strikeforce 145-pound champion Cris Cyborg, but she said after the fight that she’d rather move down to 135 pounds and fight for the title there.

“I really want to have a title shot at Miesha Tate,” Rousey said.

Whatever weight class she’s fighting in, Rousey is a force. She has the potential to be a great crossover star for women’s MMA.

In other Strikeforce Challengers action:

— Lumumba Sayers needed just 28 seconds to knock out Antwain Britt, pummeling Britt with hard punches against the cage and finishing him off with a devastating uppercut.

— Adlan Amagov got a highlight-reel knockout of Anthony Smith in the first round, swinging wildly and connecting with a huge overhand right and then finishing him off with four more bombs on the ground. The always exciting Amagov is now 9-1-1 in his MMA career.

— Trevor Smith submitted T.J. Cook with a guillotine choke in the first round. Smith put on a solid showing and improved his pro record to 9-1, with eight of his nine wins coming by submission.

— Derek Brunson beat Nate James by unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges’ scorecards, in a fairly dull battle to get the Showtime televised card started.

Ronda Rousey Returns to Strikeforce in November Against Julia Budd

Ronda Rousey (3-0) — the badass Cali chick and Judo champ who has submitted her three professional opponents in a combined 99 seconds — will make her next appearance at a November Strikeforce event, likely a Challengers card in Las Vegas. Rousey last competed three weeks ago, earning a somewhat controversial technical submission win over Sarah D’Alelio. During the fight, Rousey shouted at referee Steve Mazzagatti that D’Alelio had verbally tapped from an armbar, while D’Alelio claims that she was only screaming in agony.

Rousey will be facing Canadian striker Julia Budd (2-1), who most recently outpointed Germaine de Randamie at Strikeforce Challengers 16, but is perhaps more famous for getting dummied by Amanda Nunes. No other bouts for Strikeforce’s November card have been announced yet.

Just two weeks after notching a win in her Strikeforce debut, exciting newcomer Ronda Rousey has already committed to her follow-up bout.

The former U.S. judo Olympian has agreed to face striker Julia Budd in a November event. Strikeforce confirmed that both featherweight fighters have agreed to the bout, but did not disclose a date or location for the show, which has yet to be officially announced.

Rousey made her major promotional debut on August 12’s Strikeforce Challengers show, defeating Sarah D’Alelio by technical submission in just 25 seconds.

Though Rousey is just 24 and has only three fights in pro MMA, she has impressed many with her aggressiveness and finishing ability. All three of her bouts have finished in fight-ending armbars, and the longest of the three lasted just 49 seconds.

Prior to her pro career, she fought three times as an amateur, going 3-0 with three armbar submissions, all in less than one minute.

The 28-year-old Budd is 2-1, with all three of her pro fights coming under the Strikeforce banner. She won her debut against Shana Nelson via TKO before suffering a TKO loss to Amanda Nunes. In June, she got back in the victory column by defeating Germaine de Randamie in a unanimous decision.

Strikeforce Challengers 16: Do you Like Decisions? Because You’re Acting Like It.

These guys know what I’m talking about.

With all of the MMA available this weekend, you had to expect to sit through at least a few decisions. Maybe even a few overreactions to a subpar performance. Last night, Strikeforce Challengers 16 delivered on your expectations. Fans at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington sat through six straight unanimous decisions, with every fight on the televised portion of the card ending this way. Yet despite the lack of stoppages, most of last night’s fights were still pretty entertaining.

Fodor vs. Terry was a very entertaining scrap, with both lightweights landing hard shots throughout the fight. However, whenever the fight went to the ground, Caros Fodor clearly controlled the action, earning him the decision. The AMC Pankration prospect improved to 11-3, with four consecutive victories under the Strikeforce banner. Excuse me for pointing out the extremely obvious, but Fodor really deserves a step up in competition.

If you’re looking to avoid overreactions to a performance that shouldn’t have surprised anyone, you may want to avoid any forum discussing Ryan Couture for the rest of the day. Ryan Couture lost for the first time as a professional last night to Matt Ricehouse, and looked pretty raw while doing so. If I didn’t know better, I’d say Ryan Couture looked like a guy with only two professional fights to his name getting his first real step up in competition. Matt Ricehouse improved to 5-0, but much like Ryan Couture, looked like a work in progress.

Naturally, the internet is handling a fighter with elite pedigree, but only two professional fights to his credit looking rough around the edges as rationally as possible. And by “as rationally as possible”, I mean they’re saying he’s a bust who will never amount to a decent fighter because he doesn’t look like Randy at this point in his career. Makes sense if you think about it. As our readers who follow the NFL can tell you, neither of Archie Manning’s sons amounted to anything after rough starts to their careers. Oh wait…never mind.

Also of note, Lorenz Larkin outpointed Gian Villante, Jason High out-everythinged Quinn Mulhern and Julia Budd outwrestled Germaine de Randamie on their ways to unanimous decision victories. By the way, Zuffa’s first ever women’s MMA fight had the fans booing pretty much the entire time. So if you didn’t get to watch Budd lay on Germaine de Randamie for three rounds, you more than likely missed the beginning of the end for women’s MMA in Zuffa. That’s the most unfortunate aspect of the less than exhilarating bout.

It was inevitable, once you stop and think about it. An aggressive Brazilian fighter in the Strikeforce 145-pound women’s division comes in and knocks out her opponent in the first round of her Strikeforce debut, and the questions about (not to mention comparisons to) Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos start up before the cheers even die down.

That part didn’t particularly surprise Amanda Nunes. But after putting away Julia Budd in just fourteen seconds at last Friday’s Strikeforce: Challengers event, the irony is that now she has to learn a little patience.

“I want to fight Cyborg tomorrow, but my manager and trainers feel like I need to gain a little more experience before I fight for the championship,” Nunes told MMA Fighting via email this week. “I’ve only been training MMA for three years and I am still learning every day. The day I step in the cage with Cyborg, I will be 100% prepared.”
