Amanda Nunes admits she almost retired after loss to Julianna Pena I think I'm done UFC

Undisputed two-weight champion, Amanda Nunes has admitted that she contemplated retiring from mixed martial arts competition following her stunning upset submission loss to Julianna Peña back in December 2021, initially telling her former coach, Din Thomas that she was “done” with the sport whilst still in the Octagon.

Nunes, the current undisputed bantamweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the UFC, most recently recaptured bantamweight spoils against Peña in July of last year at UFC 277, turning in a dominant unanimous decision victory in the pair’s championship rematch.

However, prior to that, Nunes had co-headlined UFC 269 the December prior in a bantamweight title fight against Peña, turning in a dominant opening round performance, before dropping her title in arguably the biggest upset loss in the history of the organization.

Initially slated to headline UFC 289 next month against Peña in the pair’s trilogy rubber match, fractured ribs have ruled the former champion from contention, with Nunes instead drawing Irene Aldana in a title fight in British Columbia in the promotion’s return to Canadian soil.

Amanda Nunes reflects on debilitating loss to Julianna Peña

However, reflecting on her shocking submission defeat at the hands of The Ultimate Fighter victor, Peña, Nunes admitted that she had seriously contemplated retiring from the sport.

“You know, I was very confused,” Amanda Nunes told ESPN during a recent interview. “Losing my belt was crazy, but at the same time, I always said something was wrong. I saw Din [Thomas] right in the arena, and I give him a hug. I looked at him and said, ‘I think I’m done.’ We looked at each other and he [said], ‘Are you sure?’”

“I drove back home, was putting my thoughts together… I was sad for a couple moments in the camp, and when I put everything together, and me and Nina (Nunes) talked,” Amanda Nunes explained. “I was like, ‘I can not leave my belt with Julianna (Peña). It can be someone else but her.’ She did’t deserve that belt. She didn’t do anything to really deserve [and] hold that belt.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Last competing at the featherweight limit back in March 2021, Nunes turned in a dominant opening round submission win over Megan Anderson, submitting the Gold Coast native with a first round triangle armbar stoppage at the UFC Apex facility.

Amanda Nunes backed to land another dominant win over Julianna Peña at UFC 289

UFC bantamweight standout Jessica-Rose Clark believes Amanda Nunes will once again dominate Julianna Pena in the pair’s world title trilogy bout this summer.

Pena shocked the world at UFC 269, scoring a second-round rear-naked choke submission against Amanda Nunes to capture the 135-pound crown. Seven months later, ‘The Lioness’ would exact revenge, reclaiming the bantamweight championship with a dominant 25-minute beating of the ‘Venezuelan Vixen.’ Despite the series being tied 1-1, fans were seemingly uninterested in seeing a third matchup between the two. However, that didn’t stop the promotion from bringing the fight together for its long-awaited return to Canada at UFC 289 on June 10.

Sharing her thoughts on the threequel in an interview with Combat Sports on Fanatics View, bantamweight fan-favorite Jessica-Rose Clark suggested that Nunes will walk out of Rogers Arena with UFC gold still wrapped around her waist.

“Honestly, I think it’s going to go the same way as the last one went,” Clark said. “Like, I don’t think Peña has a whole lot for Amanda when Amanda’s switched on. I don’t think many people have a whole lot for Amanda when Amanda is switched on, honestly.”

Jessica-Rose Clark will step back inside the Octagon to take on 5-2 fighter Tainara Lisboa at a UFC Fight Night event scheduled for May 13. The card is expected to emanate from the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, NC, and feature a high-stakes heavyweight main event clash between Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Jailton Almeida.

Amanda Nunes and Julianna Peña trilogy fight at UFC 289 set to give fans a fiery barn-burner

In what will go down as a legendary trilogy, Nunes and Peña are both looking to be the one to exit with two victories over their rival. The first fight between the two will live forever as one of the greatest upsets in MMA history. Peña tired ‘The Lionness’ out and capitalized to secure a rear-naked choke that would end the long and storied reign of Nunes.

The world exploded with shock and awe as that moment was so unexpected and epic that fans everywhere were just simply amazed. Up until that point, Nunes had pretty much just dominated every opponent since she had become a champion. Peña was doing a lot of talking leading into the match, but nobody really believed what she said about being the one to defeat ‘The Lionness’ or even really took it seriously.

The second fight between the two would be another grueling war, but this time Nunes would edge Peña out and reclaim her title via unanimous decision.

Now, Nunes is promising a knockout of ‘The Venezuelan Vixen’, who is likewise confident she will reclaim her throne. The world is waiting, and one thing is for sure. This trilogy has all the makings to be one of the greatest in Combat Sports history, let alone UFC or Women’s MMA history.

Two-weight champion, Amanda Nunes has issued a definite warning to incoming opponent, former bantamweight champion, Julianna Peña ahead of their championship rubber match trilogy fight at UFC 289 in June – claiming she will continue to drop the latter if she rushes her in similar fashion to their July rematch.

Nunes, the current undisputed bantamweight and featherweight champion under the organization’s scrutiny, is slated to take main event honors against Peña in the promotion’s return to British Columbia, Canada – attempting to bookend her rivalry with the Washington native on the winning side of the equation.

Headlining UFC 277 back in July of last year in Texas, Nunes reclaimed her bantamweight crown with a one-sided unanimous decision (50-45, 50-44, 50-43) win over then-champion, Peña.

The outing came as a rematch between the pair – after Peña lodged a stunning upset victory over Nunes back in December 2021, winning the bantamweight crown with a spectacular second round rear-naked choke

Set to share the Octagon for a third time this summer in Canada – Peña who claimed she was suffering from a back injury due to carrying the fight between the duo this June, was issued a warning by Nunes, who reminded her of her one-sided judging loss last summer.

“I took her down at the right time with her crazy punches,” Amanda Nunes told TSN during a side-by-side interview with Julianna Peña. “Easy peasy. My judo throws too, when you were crazy in the middle of the fight. I took you down. That’s exactly what I did to you. Your headbutt was why my eye was so swollen like that – let’s be honest. What happened was the headbutt.”

“My wrestling got a lot better after that so I’m gonna take you down every time if you come crazy at me,” Amanda Nunes continued. “If you rush, Julianna, I’m gonna put your ass down. I’m telling you. Rush me, and I’m gonna put your ass down, My timing is on point.”

As well as a bantamweight title fight – a lightweight title-eliminator between former division champion, Charles Oliveira, and Beneil Dariush has also been rescheduled for the Rogers Arena event in Vancouver.
