Shane Carwin and Junior dos Santos, two of the highest ranked fighters in the UFC’s heavyweight division, will meet on Saturday night in the main event of UFC 131, which will take place at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Dos Santos was originally inked to face his opposing coach on season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter, Brock Lesnar, however, Lesnar was forced to withdraw from the fight after enduring a second bout with diverticulitis.

Carwin, who was already booked on the card, was quickly moved into Lesnar’s spot.

It has been speculated that the Carwin versus Dos Santos fight, while less appealing as a pay-per-view event, will actually be a better fight. The thinking being that since both fighters have shown a penchant for the stand and bang style, the fight will be much more exciting; most likely avoiding any wrestling or ground work.

In videos of his camp leading up to his fight with Dos Santos, Carwin looks like a new fighter, sporting a much leaner physique.

Carwin told Bleacher Report that his leaner look is no mistake,

“I started training and I was weighing in around 280lbs. and the weight just kind of fell off. I am totally eating organic and limiting my intake of sugars and such, but I am still working as hard as I ever have.”

While most fans and pundits don’t see this fight going the full three rounds based on the power and style of these two strikers, Carwin is confident that the changes he has made will allow him to go to the deep water if needed.

“I have more energy and I feel a better fighting machine than I was last year,” Carwin blogged on Yahoo. “Before Brock, I had finished all my fights inside one round, but now I know that I can go one to finish fights at any stage in a bout.”

Carwin continued, “Anyone who has bought a new car can’t wait to take it out and give it a real ‘test drive’ and that’s how I feel about my re-tooled body.”

Dos Santos offered his take on the fight and the late in the game change of opponents,

“The strategy is the only thing that’s changed,” Dos Santos told the Las Vegas Sun. “Against a guy like Brock, I would feel a little more comfortable on my feet. Fighting a guy like Shane, I’m going to have to be a little more cautious.”

The winner of this fight will most likely move to the front of the line to face current UFC heavyweight Cain Velasquez in his first UFC title defense.
