Conor McGregor has been the talk of the mixed martial arts (MMA) community as of late.

“The Notorious” caught a ton of heat after a video was leaked from an April incident in which McGregor punched a 50-year-old man inside an Irish pub. McGregor soon did an interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani to apologize for the incident and discuss his fighting future. During the interview, McGregor revealed he almost had a fight with Justin Gaethje lined up for MSG in July.

However, that fight fell through after McGregor injured his hand. That was news to Gaethje, who responded to McGregor’s comments during a recent interview with TMZ Sports (H/T MMA Mania):

”That was the first time I heard that,” Gaethje admitted. “I was training for a fight, he broke his hand early. So I think even before it would have gotten to me he broke his hand and it didn’t come together. But yeah, it makes me happy. Cowboy’s number 4 and he’s number 3 so after I get through Cowboy it’s onto the next, and that’s him.

”All he has to do is fart and we all talk about it so he makes the final decision right now, which you have to give him props for. I’m sure he’s not lying, but he did name a lot of names so it looks like he’s trying to get back into the mix of things so I’m happy about that.”

McGregor currently awaits the result of next month’s lightweight title bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier before making his next move. When asked if he believes a fight with McGregor is still possible in the future, “The Highlight” remained optimistic.

”I feel like I’ll fight him one day,” he said. “Probably after Cowboy. The winner of this fight, so long as it’s impressive. If he’s coming back, it has to be someone like me, like Cowboy. It ain’t gonna be a Tony. It could be the loser of Khabib vs. Poirier, but I doubt he wants to do that. So the next option is the winner of me vs. Cowboy if he wants back into the mix. He’s ranked number 3 right now, that’s crazy to me. But he’s got a lot of power.

”He hasn’t fought in two and a half years, but he just has to fight and we’re talking about it. He brings the most attention, he’s the biggest superstar in this sport, he’s not even fighting and he’s still the biggest superstar. So of course I want to f**k him up. I see him punch an old man, do I want to punch him for that? F**k yeah, I want to f**k that dude up for s**t like that. He looks like a crackhead on your video.”

Who do you think takes a potential fight between Gaethje and McGregor?

A fight of the year candidate is quickly approaching. Knockout artists and fan-favorites Justin Gaethje and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will clash in the UFC Vancouver main event on September 14.

The action gets underway from the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Speaking to MMA Junkie recently, Gaethje explained why his matchup with Cerrone is one that doesn’t need to be hyped up through talk. Everyone knows to expect “pure violence” when these two clash.

“This is pure violence,” Gaethje said. “This does not need to be talked up. Cowboy has had the most fights, the most performance bonuses, this will make it the most fights ever, the most wins I think, something like that.

“He has all the records. So I mean, yeah. What do we need to pump up? If you’ve seen me fight, you know that I come to, I’m 100 percent right now, I’ll be 100 percent when I’m done in the fact that either I go to sleep or they go to sleep, so, that’s what I do.”

Gaethje is currently on a two-fight winning streak after vicious knockouts of both James Vick and Edson Barboza. The former World Series Of Fighting (WSOF) lightweight kingpin takes on Cerrone, who comes off a TKO defeat to Tony Ferguson after his eye swelled up due to “Cowboy” blowing his nose during the fight. The contest was called off via doctor stoppage.

The pair have a history with one another, as Cerrone actually once knocked Gaethje out during sparring. However, the occurrence was so early into Gaethje’s fighting career, and “The Highlight” has evolved leaps and bounds since then. He looks forward to giving Cerrone a receipt.

“He knocked me out … he dropped me in sparring,” Gaethje said. “I don’t even know if I had a pro fight at the time. I was a kid then and a man now and I’m excited to get in there and give him back that one, yeah.”

What do you think about Gaethje dubbing his fight with Cerrone “pure violence?”

Conor McGregor has not stepped in the Octagon since UFC 229 last October. Yet, that almost changed this July at UFC 240.

The Irishman revealed he was going to take on Justin Gaethje in Madison Square Garden but a hand injury derailed that.

“I believe it was leaning towards Justin Gaethje at that time. But look, the game changes so quick. Everyone comes and goes. It’s a forgetful business,” Conor McGregor said to ESPN. “It’s a cruel, cruel business. Only for the amount of history, for the amount of iconic moments that’s happened in my career – they would’ve loved to throw me away, discard me. Think of other people who haven’t had what I’ve had, who’ve gone through the trauma and the battles. For the fans. That’s who we do it for. We do it for the fans, our family, for the people. And when it’s all said and done they just discard you and it’s a cruel business.

“That’s why I was happy to see Nate bounce back. And I was happy to see, not just him bounce back, but bounce back with some business on his mind,” he continued. “I know he doesn’t want to delve into that. I was listening to him talking about his CBD. And was like ‘I don’t really want to get into that.’ You need to get a hold of that also and start learning that aspect of the game, because the fight game is short, and the game is very forgetful.”

Due to the hand injury, the event was moved to Edmonton, Alberta and when he will fight again is to be seen. He mentions in the interview he wants to return soon and is eyeing a bevy of opponents, but does want to get redemption against Khabib Nurmagomedov.
