Justin Gaethje set to fight Islam Makhachev for title after UFC 294 he's earned his spot

According to his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, former interim lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje will challenge for undisputed divisional gold should his fellow client, Islam Makhachev prevail at UFC 294 next weekend in a title rematch with Charles Oliveira – claiming the promotion are chomping at the bit to pit Gaethje and Makhachev together.

Gaethje, the current number two ranked lightweight contender, is riding a two-fight winning run, most recently stopping fellow former interim champion, Dustin Poirier with a second round high-kick KO win at UFC 291 back in July in the pair’s symbolic BMF championship rematch.

And earlier this year, Gaethje stopped the surge of lightweight striking talent, Rafael Fiziev, bringing a halt to his seven fight winning streak with a close, majority decision win back in March at UFC 295 in a London co-headliner.

Justin Gaethje expected to fight Islam Makhachev after UFC 294

According to the above-mentioned Dominance MMA staple, Abdelaziz, however, should Makhachev defend his crown against Oliveira in their Abu Dhabi re-run – Gaethje would then challenge the Russian for undisputed gold.

“If Islam (Makhachev) wins, he will fight Justin Gaethje next,” Ali Abdelaziz told The Schmo during a recent interview. “This is what we want, this is what the UFC wants. Justin Gaethje earned it, too. You don’t go out there and knock out Dustin Poirier like that and don’t get a title shot. I think Justin made a statement and he earned his spot.”

Attempting to knock back the surge of Oliveira as soon as next weekend in the Middle East, Makhachev managed to scoop the vacant lightweight crown against the Brazilian back in October of last year with a second round arm-triangle submission win.

And back in February atop a UFC 284 card, Makhachev defended his championship in a close decision win over pound-for-pound best and featherweight champion counterpart, Alexander Volkanovski in Perth, Australia.

Who wins: Islam Makhachev or Justin Gaethje?

Bradley Martyn

BMF titleholder Justin Gaethje likes his chances against YouTuber and fitness guru Bradley Martyn.

Over the last few months, Martyn has drawn the ire of the MMA community after suggesting that he could hold his own against some of the best professional fighters in the world, including Sean O’Malley, Nate Diaz, Alex Pereira, and Demetrious Johnson. Martyn has zero experience in combat sports but has remained adamant that his hulking frame would be all he needs to give any world-class competitor a run for their money.

During a recent Q&A session as part of the UFC 293 festivities, Justin Gaethje and Dan Hooker were asked whether or not they could beat Bradley Martyn in a hypothetical scrap.

All you gotta do is last about 20 seconds and he’s f*cked, so yes,” Gaethje said.

When one fan in attendance reminded ‘The Highlight’ that Martyn weighs upwards of 260 pounds, Gaethje amended his initial response saying, “Okay, 10 seconds.”

ONE World Champion Demetrious Johnson Happy to Step on the Mat with Bradley Martyn

Of all the professional fighters that Martyn has called out thus far, only one has challenged him to put his money where his mouth is; Demetrious Johnson. The former UFC and current ONE world champion offered to meet the popular podcaster in California for a grappling session. The challenge immediately sparked interest among fans considering Johnson typically walks around at 150 pounds compared to Martyn’s muscular 260-pound build.

But after seeing Martyn struggle to roll with stand-up comic and Joe Rogan sidekick Bryan Callen, it’s hard to imagine that Martyn ends up as anything more than a stain on the mat should he take ‘Mighty Mouse’ up on his offer.

Conor McGregor claims Justin Gaethje should fight Jorge Masvidal get in the sauna

Former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor has hit out at former interim lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje for his refusal to entertain a symbolic BMF title unifier with inaugural holder, Jorge Masvidal, pointing to the Miami native’s prior fighting history at 155lbs.

McGregor, a former undisputed featherweight and lightweight champion under the banner of the UFC, has been sidelined from the Octagon since he headlined UFC 264 back in 2021, suffering a doctor’s stoppage TKO loss against Dustin Poirier after he fractured his left tibia and fibula.

As for Gaethje, the former interim lightweight champion headlined UFC 291 against common-foe, Poirier in the pair’s long-awaited rematch.

Striking symbolic BMF spoils back in July in Salt Lake City, Utah, Gaethje avenged a knockout loss of his own to Poirier with a thunderous second round high-kick KO in The Beehive State’.

And in the immediate aftermath of the rematch, Gaethje was targeted for a BMF title unifier by inaugural gold holder, Masvidal, claiming he would entertain ending his retirement from the sport to fight the Arizona native in a comeback.

Rejecting that notion of a unifier against Masvidal next, Gaethje cited the Floridian’s recent history competing at the welterweight limit, for the reason a bout would likely fail to come to fruition.

Conor McGregor urges Justin Gaethje to fight Jorge Masvidal in the future

However, as far as McGregor is concerned, Gaethje should consider a BMF championship fight with Masvidal, most definitely.

“The most un-BFM shout ever,” Conor McGregor posted about Justin Gaethje on his official X account. “He fights at 155 (pounds). Lol. B*tch. Get into the sauna, b*tch.”

Himself previously targeting an immediate return to the Octagon against Gaethje himself, a clash with McGregor has been on the mind of the Arizona striker, admittedly, who revealed that he had often dreamt about the possibility of fighting McGregor – and subsequently ending the Dubliner’s illustrious career.

Jorge Masvidal cements retirement after Justin Gaethje laughs at BMF fight in UFC

After seeing calls for a potential BMF championship fight with recent symbolic title winner, Justin Gaethje shut down, inaugural gold holder, Jorge Masvidal has now cemented his retirement from combat sports, claiming he would put all his attention into promoting fights under his Gamebred FC banner.

Masvidal, a former two-time welterweight title challenger under the banner of the UFC, most recently co-headlining an event on home soil in Miami back in April – suffering a fourth consecutive loss in the form of a decision defeat to Gilbert Burns.

In the time since, Masvidal has switched full focus to promoting his bare knuckle mixed martial arts organization, Gamebred FC – hosting a rematch between former UFC heavyweight champions, Junior dos Santos and Fabricio Werdum over the course of the weekend.

However, weighing up potential comebacks against past-foe, Ben Askren, as well as the above-mentioned, Gaethje – whom he strapped BMF spoils on back in July, Masvidal was immediately shut down by the latter, who poked fun at his apparent weight gain.

Jorge Masvidal confirms an extended retirement from MMA competition

And firmly shutting the door on a potential comeback – even if a UFC 305 event takes place in his Floridian postcode, Masvidal insisted he was done competing in combat sports.

“I’m retired, bro,” Jorge Masvidal told Middleeasy during a recent interview. “I got fights to promote and stuff, and I love MMA, just right now, I just retired, man. I still try to go to the gym everyday, but that competition and a lot of the things that come with it, I just did it for 20 years.”

“Bro, I love it, it’s my favorite sport in the world, this is my favorite thing,” Jorge Masvidal explained. “But just right now, nah, I ain’t fighting nobody right now.”

Twice challenging former pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman for undisputed welterweight gold in 2020 and 2021, respectively, Masvidal would first drop a short-notice decision loss to the Nigerian, before suffering a thunderous second round KO in the pair’s title rematch.

Justin Gaethje BMF fight with Conor McGregor dreamt about ending his career UFC

Newly-minted symbolic BMF titleholder, Justin Gaethje has once more played up the possibility of a future clash with long-time UFC foe, former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor, claiming he has long desired to end the career of the veteran Dubliner.

Gaethje, the current number two ranked lightweight contender and former interim division champion, headlined UFC 291 most recently against common-foe, Dustin Poirier back in July – defeating the Lafayette puncher with a spectacular second round high-kick KO in the pair’s rematch.

As for McGregor, the 35-year-old still retains hope of headlining UFC 296 in December, in what would mark his combat sports return for the first time since he fractured his left tibia and fibula in a doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Poirier back in the summer of 2021.

Justin Gaethje claims Conor McGregor keeps refusing to fight him

Switching his focus from a clash with would-be common-opponent, Michael Chandler following Gaethje’s symbolic BMF title win, McGregor, who predicted a one-sided first round KO win over the Arizona veteran to boot, has earned the attention of the latter – to say the least.

“Yeah, I mean, it sounds fun,” Justin Gaethje told assembled media of a fight against Conor McGregor during a Q&A event ahead of UFC 293. “I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’ve dreamt of ending his career and making sure he’s never able to step back in there. (Michael) Chandler will now be the second guy that I’ve beat, that he’s chose to fight. And, you know, I think that speaks for itself.”

“He won’t fight me, plain and simple,” Justin Gaethje explained. “… Like I said, a chance to take him out for good, would be on the top of my list. I like money too – I fight for money, so that’s always good. No, but the chance to take him out for good – for one, shut all of his fans up for the rest of my life, at least. That’s better for me than the money.”
