Conor McGregor? Jorge Masvidal? UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman doesn’t care who is next for him.

Usman recently defended his 170-pound strap following his fifth-round TKO victory over Colby Covington at UFC 245 last month. “The Nigerian Nightmare” is now primed for a very big fight next.

It could be against the red-hot Masvidal or against the biggest superstar in the history of the sport in McGregor who has expressed an interest in a third title.

But for Usman, he leaves it up to UFC president Dana White as he has never been one to pick and choose fights:

“I’m the champion,” Usman told media on Thursday. “That’s it, plain and simple. I am the champion. They have to come to me. There’s a reason now they talk about me. That’s because I have the gold.

“Anybody can get it. I’ve never said no. When Dana White calls and says, ‘I want to take out this guy.’ I say, ‘When?’ And we get it done. I’m not the one picking and choosing fights. I’ve never turned down a fight ever in my career.”

That said, Usman would be stupid not to be interested in a fight with McGregor. It would not only bring the most eyeballs on him, but also be the most lucrative payday of his career.

And one thing Usman isn’t, is a hater as he can appreciate what the Irishman brings:

“Conor is special to the world of mixed martial arts,” Usman added. “That’s the thing with me. I’m no hater. I give credit where credit is due. That young man has definitely done a lot for the sport.

“If he feels he wants to step in and challenge, he’s trying to make history – to actually fight for a third title. I’d be stupid to stand in the way of history and give him that opportunity. Conor can get it, too, if he wants it.”

We’ll certainly get to know a lot about Usman’s potential next opponent after UFC 246 this Saturday.

Kamaru Usman Not Interested In Jorge Masvidal’s ‘Mediocre’ BMF Title

One of the biggest possible matchups to be made at 170 pounds is a bout between UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal.

Masvidal seemingly earned a title opportunity after his amazing run in 2019. He kicked the year off with a big knockout win over Darren Till, followed by a record-breaking five-second knockout win over Ben Askren, and finally becoming the BMF Champion by defeating Nate Diaz at UFC 244.

Now, Masvidal is waiting for his first fight of 2020, which could go one of two ways. A massive money fight with Conor McGregor, or a welterweight title opportunity against Kamaru Usman. Usman and Masvidal have exchanged words through the media over the past several weeks. Earlier today (Thurs. January 16, 2020), Usman held a press conference in Las Vegas during UFC 246 media day.

Usman was asked about a potential fight with Masvidal, and possibly taking his BMF belt. “The Nigerian Nightmare” said he has no interest in “Gamebred’s” mediocre title. (H/T ESPN’s Brett Okamoto)

“I’m not intetested in a title for mediocrity. I have gold. That’s what matters to me. Last time I checked the value in gold is higher than silver.”

Both Usman and Masvidal are in town for UFC 246 this weekend, which will see Conor McGregor return at welterweight to take on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Should McGregor win, the Irishman could be considered as a potential opponent for either Masvidal or Usman next.

Conor McGregor Jabs At Kamaru Usman’s ‘Sniff-The-Jockstrap’ Style

Conor McGregor will make his return to Octagon action this weekend (Sat. January 18, 2020). However, his fight with Donald Cerrone in the UFC 246 pay-per-view (PPV) headliner won’t be at 155 pounds, but rather in the welterweight division. Conor McGregor will make his return to Octagon action this weekend (Sat. January 18, 2020).

However, his fight with Donald Cerrone in the UFC 246 pay-per-view (PPV) headliner won’t be at 155 pounds, but rather in the welterweight division. This will be McGregor’s third-ever fight at 170 pounds, a weight the Irishman claims he feels great at. In fact, he has even expressed interest in chasing the welterweight championship as his 2020 campaign begins.

This is an idea that current titleholder Kamaru Usman thinks is best to avoid for “Notorious,” who he says he’d hurt “really really bad” if they stepped into the Octagon against each other. Speaking at the UFC 246 pre-fight press conference yesterday, McGregor mentioned two big potential fights for himself at welterweight.

Those being against Usman for the title, and BMF Champion Jorge Masvidal. McGregor admits the Masvidal matchup is more stylistically appealing, as opposed to one with Usman, who has a “sniff-the-jockstrap” style. (H/T MMA Fighting)

“That’s an interesting one, what would I be interested in more – I’d take both,” McGregor said. “I would like that bad motherf*cker title, that belt, then I’d like the gold. For me, the gold has a bit more significance to it, especially since the way the ‘BMF’ fight finished. I thought we were robbed of aa classic contest there. I thought it was only kicking into gear rounds 4 and 5. But they’re both exciting bouts.

“I’d say probably the more exciting of the bouts would probably be myself versus Jorge, from a stylistic standpoint. Usman kind of has the similar style of Khabib [Nurmagomedov], the sniff-the-jockstrap style.”

Usman comes off a successful first-ever title defense in which he TKO’d Colby Covington in the fifth round of their UFC 245 main event in December. Now, Usman awaits for things to shape themselves out at 170 pounds before receiving his next challenger to the throne.

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman explained the “who?” jab he took at Jorge Masvidal recently.

When asked about Masvidal challenging him for the title next, Usman responded with a “who?” Masvidal took that jab literally and responded by posting a video of Usman talking about him earlier in 2019.

Of course, “The Nigerian Nightmare” very well knows who Masvidal is. His comments were only implying that “Gamebred” wasn’t deserving of the next shot despite the phenomenal 2019 that he enjoyed.

“He’s misunderstanding me,” Usman told MMA Fighting. “He’s playing that angle that I’m saying I don’t know who he is. I know exactly who he is and I’ve given him props. That’s the one thing about me, I’m not a hater in any way, shape, form or fashion. I give respect where respect is due. Him fighting, yeah, I know him fighting but when they brought up you fight Jorge Masvidal next I’m like ‘who?’

“There are guys that are more deserving [of a title shot]. Jorge Masvidal doesn’t have a win over anyone in the top six. Does not have a win over anybody in the top six. I’ve beaten five of the top six guys in the division. That’s why I said that.”

Regardless, Usman would accept a fight with Masvidal if that is what is offered to him next. After years of calling out other fighters and developing a reputation for being one of the most avoided fighters, Usman is just thankful to be the target for many fighters now.

“All of them, they’re playing in a sweepstakes to fight me. That’s all it is,” Usman added. “That’s a beautiful place to be because now I don’t have to go beg and call him out on Instagram or Twitter. All I have to do is stay put and the fights will come to me.”
