Being called “Marty From Nebraska” doesn’t fly with Kamaru Usman after all. Ben Askren hasn’t been shy in calling out several Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighters. Askren has roasted many welterweights, but at first he didn’t really bash Usman. In fact, “Funky” has said he doesn’t have bad things to say about “The Nigerian Nightmare” […]

I don’t know if I would describe the altercation quite how Ben Askren did but there was definitely a backstage confrontation between him and Kamaru Usman at the UFC 235 presser.

Since joining the UFC Askren has taken aim at nearly every relevant welterweight on the roster. He claims to know Usman from their amateur wrestling days, when Usman went by the name “Marty” as Askren recalls – “Marty from Nebraska.”

Although both men are scheduled to fight different opponents at UFC 235 you would never know it by the animosity both these men seem to have for one another. Just like Askren said, there was an altercation backstage prior to the presser but it is a stretch to call it an “attack” like the former Olympian did.

In fact, Usman did approach Askren but he did so in a calm and controlled manner. That, however, didn’t stop “Funky” Ben from asking UFC President Dana White if he had sat him next to “Marty from Nebraska.” (via Youtube All-Access Anatomy of UFC 235)

UFC 235 takes place on March 2 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Usman will challenge Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title in the co-main event. While Askren makes his Octagon debut against former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler on the main card.

Ben Askren Describes Backstage Beef With Kamaru Usman

One of the more entertaining parts of last evening’s UFC 235 press conference was the back-and-forth between Ben Askren and Kamaru Usman. One of the more entertaining parts of last evening’s UFC 235 press conference was the back-and-forth between Ben Askren and Kamaru Usman.

Askren will make his Octagon debut on the same card his good friend and training partner welterweight champion Tyron Woodley defends the title against “The Nigerian Nightmare.” There’s no doubt “Funky” will have his hands full against Robbie Lawler on March 2.

That, however, hasn’t stopped the former Olympian from taking shots at nearly every other 170-pound fighter on the roster.

Usman is one of the fighters Askren has taken aim at. And it seems like “Funky” has got under the skin of the title challenger as evident from the back and forth at the presser last night.

“Marty tried attacking me 20 minutes ago,” Askren said at the UFC 235 press conference (h/t mmamania.com). “I knew this dude, we trained together at the Olympic training center. He was ‘Marty’ then. I think he’s confused on what we do. We don’t play basketball or wrestling, we get in the cage and fight each other. So threatening me backstage is what I volunteered for. I volunteered for that.”

While Askren interpreted the backstage confrontation as an “attack”, Usman, as you might imagine, has a completely different take on the run in.

“Threatened him? See, that’s different,” Usman fired back. “It’s not threatened. There’s no threats. Why do I need to threaten somebody for? My thing is, if you’re going to talk online, if you’re going to come at me with a certain energy, when you see me on-site, keep that certain energy. I’m fighting for the UFC welterweight title and on March 2nd, I will be the new welterweight champion. At that point, you can come talk to me.”

The welterweight division should have a little more clarity come March 2.

Colby Covington no longer has a UFC title shot waiting for him on the horizon.

“Chaos” will have to earn the opportunity yet again. Speaking on a Facebook Live chat with the Las Vegas Review-Journal after the UFC 225 press conference yesterday (Thurs. January 31, 2019), UFC President Dana White said Covington will need to earn the opportunity again (via MMA Junkie):

“Colby now is going to have to fight again and earn the spot to get back,” White said.

The UFC’s 170-pound division is shaping up rather nicely. Woodley is preparing to defend his title against top contender Kamaru Usman. They’ll co-main event UFC 235 on pay-per-view (PPV) on March 2nd from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also, welterweight great Ben Askren has finally joined the division.

He’ll make his promotional debut at the PPV as well, facing off against former champion Robbie Lawler. For Covington to get back in the title mix again, he’ll need to pick up a big victory. He was in a great position just this past summer. With a victory over former 155-pound champion Rafael dos Anjos, capturing the interim 170-pound title in the process, Covington was all but guaranteed the next crack at Woodley.

However, issues on both sides prevented that fight from happening. Woodley is now heading into his second title defense since Covington’s interim title victory, which “Chaos” has since been stripped of. It will be interesting to see if the former training partners ever find themselves fighting each other in 2019.
