Entering his premier UFC title challenger this weekend at UFC 278 as the consensus underdog, welterweight challenger, Leon Edwards has been backed by his compatriot, former undisputed middleweight kingpin, Michael Bisping to defeat champion, Kamaru Usman – in what he describes as a “tough fight” for both division standouts.

Edwards, who rides a 10-fight undefeated run into his first title challenge under the UFC banner this weekend in Salt Lake City, last fought in June of last year at UFC 263, defeating the veteran, Nate Diaz in a unanimous decision win.

For Usman, the Auchi pacesetter looks to turn in a staggering sixteenth straight UFC win when pitted with Edwards in their rematch, as well as secure his sixth successful defense of the undisputed welterweight crown.

First meeting on the preliminary card of a UFC Orlando event back in December 2015, Usman successfully defeated Edwards over the course of three rounds in a unanimous decision effort in the ‘Sunshine State’.

Michael Bisping picks underdog Leon Edwards to win at UFC 278 tomorrow

Seven years on, Edwards has been touted as one of the biggest tests to Usman’s dominant reign to boot. And the aforenoted Manchester favorite, Bisping has sided with the Birmingham technician to follow in his footsteps and land Octagon gold.

“It’s a tough fight for both men and I truly am torn,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “I’m friends with Kamaru Usman, I respect his body of work greatly, but if you think I’m gonna sit here on my YouTube channel, being a proud Brit, and pick against Leon Edwards, you’re out of your God damn mind. I gotta do it. I gotta go with team U.K. just to send that positivity into the atmosphere.”

“I’ve got Leon Edwards winning via decision,” Michael Bisping explained. “So, there you go. If Leon wins, it’s because he’s going to outpoint him for five rounds. If Kamaru wins, it’s probably because he’s gonna rock him with a right hand, take him down and try and ragdoll him on the floor.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Ahead of his UFC 278 headliner this weekend in Salt Lake City, undisputed welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman has flaunted an apparent “death grip” ahead of an eventual light heavyweight division leap, however, doesn’t plan on ballooning in mass to make the climb.

Usman, the current undisputed welterweight champion, returns to the Octagon for the first time this year atop this Saturday’s UFC 278 card at the Vivint Arena – rematching title challenger, Leon Edwards as he searches for his sixth successful title defense. Usman previously defeated Edwards in a unanimous decision win back in December 2015.

Kamaru Usman doubts the need for a weight gain ahead of a light heavyweight leap

Adding fuel to the fire on a potential light heavyweight division move, Usman has welcomed immediate title clashes against either champion, Jiri Prochazka, or Brazilian veteran, Glover Teixeira, as well as a landing against Jan Blachowicz.

However, akin to his fellow Nigerian-born champion, Israel Adesanya at middleweight – Usman claims he would not seek out a sizeable weight gain to make the light heavyweight limit.

“I don’t need to put on the weight,” Kamaru Usman told MMA Junkie. “People don’t understand what my death grip is like. If I get around you, I don’t care if whether you’re a heavyweight or 205 (pounds) – these guys understand where my strength is. But I’ll leave that up to my coaches. I have an idea what I want to do in a fight, but I’ll leave that up to my coaches.”

“I have an approach of how I want to fight those fights in my head, which usually comes out when everything else is falling in a fight,” Kamaru Usman explained.

Successfully defending his welterweight throne on five separate occasions, Usman holds knockout wins over both Jorge Masvidal, and Colby Covington – to go with decision wins over the pair, as well as a knockout win over former teammate, Gilbert Burns last year.

Attempting to better five failed prior attempts to snatch the undisputed welterweight throne from Kamaru Usman, challenger, Leon Edwards has made his intentions clear to “humble” the Auchi native at UFC 278 this Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Entering his title rematch with Usman off the back of a 10-fight undefeated run, Birmingham native, Leon Edwards will attempt to clinch UFC gold at the first time of trying, as well as avenge a prior unanimous decision loss to Usman back in December 2015.

Appearing alongside the quarter of Paulo Costa, Luke Rockhold, Jose Aldo, and Merab Davlishvili at a press conference tonight to promote UFC 278, Usman questioned the recent disrespect he interprets from Edwards ahead of their rematch.

Sporting his NFT necklace, which displays his blistering rematch knockout of Jorge Masvidal last year, Usman poked fun at Edwards’ run-in with the Miami native back in 2018, claiming that the Team Renagade BJJ & MMA mainstay, and his “mandem” failed to retaliate.

Leon Edwards believes he sees through a persona Kamaru Usman is putting on

Questioning the arrogance of Usman in recent fights and in the approaches to his Octagon outings, Leon Edwards claimed that he would thoroughly “humble” the undisputed welterweight kingpin this weekend.

Continuing in his intense vein of form tonight, former middleweight champion, Rockhold took umbrage with Costa’s disregard to his decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu base, claiming he would make the Brazilian look like a “b*tch” if their fight landed on the Octagon canvas

Furthermore, Rockhold expressed his disappointment with the fact his teammate, former UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez would be unable to attend UFC 278 due to his ongoing legal issues in regards to a shooting earlier this year; “Cain is a f*cking good human being, the world f*cking sucks. I love that man. It’s bullsh*t.”

Questioning the weight of Costa – who forced an impromptu light heavyweight headliner with Marvin Vettori last year, Rockhold claimed that the Belo Horizonte native struggles to deal with adversity.

“The one time you met adversity, you missed weight by 20 f*cking pounds,” Luke Rockhold fired at Paulo Costa.”
