The two Polish female stars went to battle in the strawweight title clash, as ‘JJ’ unleashed her fierce striking arsenal on her fellow countrywoman in the early rounds of the contest. In the later rounds, however, Kowalkiewicz landed a nice shot that rocked ‘Joanna Champion’ and had her in serious danger before she was able to regroup.

With tonight’s (Sat., November 12, 2016) historic UFC 205 in the record books from Madison Square Garden in New York City, the collective MMA world can now bask in the glory of a so-called ‘super card’ that actually delivered to the point of legitimately being in the conversation for the best mixed martial arts event of all time.

The card featured UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor making history by stopping lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez to become the first concurrent two-weight champion in UFC history in the main event, yet it also featured so, so much more. New York City’s first major MMA event also showcased the absolutely insane back-and-forth war between Tyron Woodley Stephen Thompson in the co-main event in addition to Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s entertaining women’s strawweight title bout versus a very game Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

The main card had more drama still, with Yoel Romero knocking out former champ Chris Weidman with a picturesque flying knee and Miesha Tate’s shocking retirement after her decision loss to Raquel Pennington. Finally, the prelims were home to even more exciting fights, as Frankie Edgar once again showed his legendary heart by surviving a huge head kick from Jeremy Stephens to outlast the power-hitting “Lil’ Heathen,” while top lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov picked up his first win over a top competitor in two-and-a-half years when he submitted Michael Johnson after a dominant wrestling display.

All in all, it was a legendary event that made a strong case for the best MMA event ever. Do you think it earned that lofty title?

The Ultimate Fighting Championship rolled into Madison Square Garden in New York, NY, tonight (Saturday, November 12, 2016) with one of the deepest slates of talent in history.

The fights delivered on the hype.

In the main event, Conor McGregor turned in a masterful performance in dismantling defending lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. In doing so, ‘Notorious’, the reigning featherweight ruler, became the first man in UFC history to hold championships in two weight classes simultaneously. He knocked Alvarez down three times in the first round with devastating counter left hands. He did the trick one more time in the second, and he pounced on a dazed Alvarez to seal the victory.

The middle fight of the title tripleheader was marred by controversy, but it was a fantastic fight. Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley took down the challenger, Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, in the first round and battered him. Two lackluster rounds followed for the champ, as Thompson got back into the fight with volume kickboxing and distance control. ‘The Chosen One’ nearly ended the proceedings several times in the fourth round, however, and it proved to be a 10-8 round that saved his title. A crushing right hand, ground and pound, and a vice-like guillotine could not put the supremely tough ‘Wonderboy’ away.

The scorecards were read 47-47, 47-47, and 48-47 Woodley, and the fight was mistakenly declared a split decision for Woodley. Part-way through the post-fight interview, a correction was read that the fight was a majority draw. Woodley retained his title, but did not claim the victory. Boos rained down from the crowd at the confusing and unsatisfying result.

In the first title tilt of the evening, Joanna Jedrzejczyk defeated countrywoman Karolina Kowalkiewicz by unanimous decision in a fight she largely dominated. Superior power, combinations, and leg kicks buoyed ‘Joanna Champion’ to a 3-0 lead on the scorecards, but Kowalkiewicz got her licks in. The challenger looked to be on the brink of stealing the belt in round four, when she caught Jedrzejczyk moving forward onto a hard shot, wobbling the champion’s legs. Joanna survived, but by the end of the fight, she sported a grisly hematoma on the right side of her face so that everyone watching knew she had been in a fight.

The first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title bout in New York City went down inside Madison Square Garden at UFC 205. Strawweight ruler Joanna Jedrzejczyk (13-0) defended her 115-pound title against undefeated bruiser Karolina Kowalkiewicz (10-1).

For the first three rounds, it looked like the champion was going to take this bout in a landslide. In the fourth round, however, things got interesting.

The champion had her leg kick blocked and got hit with a jab. A left hand followed by a leg kick found the mark for Jedrzejczyk. Kowalkiewicz struggled early to get in a rhythm. She found her way to the clinch. They separated and the champion pushed her against the fence. Jedrzejczyk landed a knee to the body. They broke free again and traded leather as the opening frame came to a close.

The second stanza was underway and the champion connected with a combination that ended in a kick to the midsection. Kowalkiewicz couldn’t find an effective way to move inside without being hit. Jedrzejczyk chopped away at the legs of the challenger. She landed an elbow and then engaged in the clinch. Commentator Joe Rogan mentioned Jedrzejczyk’s nose bothering her. There was blood under the champion’s nose, but she still stuck to her plan. The challenger pushed her opponent against the fence, but she was reversed and ate a knee. A spinning backfist found the target for the champion and the round ended shortly after.

Round three was underway and Kowalkiewicz went for a side kick. Her clinch game continued to be thwarted by the strawweight queen. Jedrzejczyk peppered the challenger with some more shots, easily dominating the fight to this point. She landed some elbows with the challenger’s back against the fence.

The fourth round saw Jedrzejczyk landing some front body kicks early. Kowalkiewicz landed a combination, but her back found the cage yet again. The champion landed an elbow on the break. The champion was rocked out of nowhere with a clean right hand. The challenger moved forward, but she ate a leg kick and was taken down momentarily. The champion recovered and the two separated. Kowalkiewicz caught a leg and landed two straight rights. Jedrzejczyk landed a knee to the body towards the end, but the challenger took the round easily.

The final round was underway and the champion wasn’t fazed by the previous frame. Kowalkiewicz went for a spinning back kick, but took a leg kick. A hook connected for the champion. An uppercut inside the clinch found the chin of Kowalkiewicz. The two exchanged punches in the pocket. Jedrzejczyk and the challenger engaged in the clinch again. A combination that ended in a body kick was in the champion’s favor. A knee to the head landed for the champion. She pelted her opponent with a high kick on the break and the final horn sounded shortly after.

Final Result: Joanna Jedrzejczyk def. Karolina Kowalkiewicz via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46)

The most stacked card in history is here.

Blowing previous mega-cards UFC 200 and UFC 202 out of the water in terms of potential excitement, high-level competition, big names, and high stakes, UFC 205 will be the promotion’s inaugural foray into New York City. The blockbuster event will emanate Saturday November 12, 2016, from Madison Square Garden in New York, NY.

The headliner will see the biggest draw in the sport today, Conor McGregor, seeking to make history. The current undisputed featherweight champion, the ‘Notorious’ one will attempt to dethrone current lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. If he is successful, he will become the first simultaneous two-division title-holder in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The hard-nosed Alvarez will be making his first defense of the title in the money fight of his choosing. He last appeared in July, when he ripped the belt from Rafael dos Anjos.

The main card also features two other title fights. First, Joanna J?drzejczyk will look to defend her title for a fourth time when she goes toe to toe with fellow Polish striker Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Then welterweight champ Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley will square off with consensus number one contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

The rest of the main draw will see New York native Chris Weidman lock horns with Cuban wrestling dynamo Yoel Romero and former bantamweight champion Miesha Tate warring with Raquel Pennington.

Read on for a breakdown of every scrap on the main card.
