Surging welterweight contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone was originally set to meet No. 5-ranked Kelvin Gastelum on the main card of this weekend’s (Nov. 12, 2016) UFC 205 from New York, but the bout was scrapped earlier this morning after Gastelum failed to make wait. Cerrone, who was visibly angry about the situation, may not have to wait too long to fight, however, as the promotion is targeting a bout for him at Dec. 10’s UFC 206 according to MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani:

FOX Sports’ Damon Martin confirmed this statement, saying that the UFC is attempting to book “Cowboy” against No. 14-ranked Matt Brown:

Brown has hit some rough times as of late, losing three of his last four bouts including consecutive losses to Demian Maia and Jake Ellenberger. “The Immortal” is currently scheduled to fight Tarec Saffiedine at Dec. 30’s UFC 207 from Las Vegas, but apparently the UFC has greater interest in him fighting Cerrone.

“Cowboy” has won three straight since moving up to 170-pounds including finishes over Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote and Rick Story.

UFC 207 is set to go down from Toronto, Canada with the card being headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between champion Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson.

Donald Cerrone: Robbie Lawler Would Be ‘A Hell Of A Fight’

Donald Cerrone is set to take on No. 5-ranked Kelvin Gastelum at this Saturday’s (Nov. 12, 2016) UFC 205 from New York, but he was originally scheduled to take on No. 1-ranked former champion Robbie Lawler, although Lawler was forced to withdraw from the bout shortly after agreeing to the terms.

Despite being disappointed that the fight was called off, “Cowboy” hasn’t lost any respect for the “Ruthless” one, and he admits that a bout with Lawler would be ‘a hell of a fight’:

“I still respect the sh-t out of the dude. He’s a good friend of mine, I have more respect for him calling me first and letting me know, that tells you how he is. This is a guy that would be a hell of a fight,” Cerrone said via MMA Fighting.

When it was reported that Lawler had pulled out of the fight, fans were a bit confused as it wasn’t exactly made clear why he wasn’t able to fight. In fact, a reason has still yet to be given, although Cerrone feels as if it has to do with the fact that the ex-champion is coming off of a brutal knockout loss to Tyron Woodley just last July:

“I don’t know mentally what was going on with Lawler, he’s not really a guy that pulls out of fights,” Cerrone said. “He’s a tough dude. What I think might have happened, maybe he got rocked in sparring, or maybe his head wasn’t all the way healed up. Maybe there wasn’t enough time.”

“Those are just things I’m making up, I don’t really know what was going on with him, those are just things that can happen.”

If Cerrone can get by Gastelum, he will extend his winning streak to four since moving up to 170-pounds earlier this year, making a bout between him and Lawler still a possibility.

Kelvin Gastelum Details Plan To Beat ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone

No. 5-ranked Kelvin Gastelum will face a tough task at Nov. 12’s UFC 205 when he meets former lightweight title challenger turned surging welterweight contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on the event’s main card. No. 5-ranked Kelvin Gastelum will face a tough task at Nov. 12’s UFC 205 when he meets former lightweight title challenger turned surging welterweight contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on the event’s main card.

Cerrone has won three straight by way of stoppage since moving up to 170-pounds after suffering two defeats to former lightweight king Rafael dos Anjos, a man who has also trained under Gastelum’s trainer Rafael Cordeiro. Because of this, Gastelum feels as if he will have the strategy to beat “Cowboy”:

“They’ve figured out a formula on how to beat him,” Gastelum said when speaking to FOX Sports. “They’ve beat him twice and Master Rafael Cordeiro, I told him ‘what do you think about this fight?’ He said ‘no problem, we beat him twice, we’ll beat him again.’ I’m feeling pretty good.”

Gastelum also feels as if his strength, speed, and southpaw stance will help lead him towards a victory over Cerrone in New York:

“Donald doesn’t do very good against southpaws. I believe he’s about 2-5 against southpaws,” Gastelum said. “Only wins against Benson Henderson and Rick Story recently and he’s had problems against Nate Diaz, against Rafael dos Anjos twice, against Benson Henderson twice, so he’s had problems with southpaws that give him trouble.”

“I think I’m a bigger, stronger version of Rafael dos Anjos. I can come forward with that same style of pressure, except I’m going to be faster and stronger than Rafael was.”

With Cerrone being ranked at No. 6 within the division, this fight holds major title implications for both men, and Gastelum plans to continue his trek towards the gold:

“I’m ranked top five in the division and that’s where I want to keep going,” Gastelum said. “I want to keep moving up, I want to move up the rankings and hopefully get a title shot after this fight.”

The 170-pound title is also set to be defended at UFC 205 when champion Tyron Woodley meets Stephen Thompson in the co-main event.

The MMA world was dealt a disappointing blow when it was confirmed that former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler was forced out of his awaited showdown with Donald Cerrone at November 12’s UFC 205 from New York City.

A glimmer of hope came in the form of a rumor linking Nick Diaz to negotiations to replace “Ruthless,” but today (Wed., September 14, 2016) news has arrived that another top welterweight will apparently face “Cowboy.” According to a Tweet from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, No. 5-ranked welterweight Kelvin Gastelum has agreed to fight Cerrone in the UFC’s NYC debut:

While it may not be against a storied MMA legend like Lawler, defeating a fighter as highly ranked as Gastelum would arguably put Cerrone, who’s finished off Rick Story, Patrick Cote, and Alex Oliveira since moving up to 170 following a failed title bout against Rafael dos Anjos at lightweight, in title contention in one of MMA’s most talented divisions.

Although he’s had repeated problems making weight, Gastelum has picked up wins over some of welterweight’s finest, including a decision victory over former champion Johny Hendricks at July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas. He’s currently split his last four bouts at 2-2, but both losses were closely contested split decisions to current champ Tyron Woodley (a bout many felt he won) and stalwart vet Neil Magny.

Gastelum was originally slated to face Jorge Masvidal at UFC Fight Night: Dos Anjos vs. Ferguson on November 5 from Mexico City, Mexico.
