While it may not have inspired the hype of a UFC pay-per-view (PPV) event (which have been failing majorly lately), last night’s (Sat., March 11, 2017) UFC Fight Night 106 from the Olympic Training Center in Fortaleza, Brazil, delivered one of – if not the – best top-to-bottom mixed martial arts (MMA) events of the year thus far.

The card featured a changing of the guard when a young, up-and-coming contender beat an aging legend, another legend showing he can still compete with the best, and the far and away best knockout of the year, among other highlights.

Overall the card delivered an action-packed night of bouts where several fighters made extremely strong cases for their prospects going forward. Let’s take a look back at the five biggest takeaways from the entertaining event.

5.) Alex Oliveira has a permanent home at 170 pounds:

Energetic Brazilian Oliveira had some questions to answer after his first bout against Tim Means was declared a no contest due to illegal knees, and he accomplished that goal in impressive fashion by finishing ‘The Dirty Bird’ with a flawless gameplan in his home country. ‘Cowboy’ was aggressive with effective wrestling from the opening bell, and it opened a path for Oliveira to use his slick submission skills to win the bout with a fight-ending rear-naked choke in the second round.

Like his American ‘Cowboy’ counterpart (whom he lost an exciting bout to last year), Oliveira has benefitted from fighting up a weight class after depleting his body to make the lightweight limit of 156 pounds. That’s a good thing, because he missed weight before his last lightweight bout and has a short leash in that regard. As of now, it appears to be a blessing in disguise, with Oliveira looking strong and dangerous at 170 as he improves with each passing contest. It’s going to be exciting to watch the ultra-active brawler attempt to rise up the ladder in arguably the toughest division in all of the UFC.

After a highly successful middleweight debut against longtime veteran Tim Kennedy late last year, rising 185-pounder Kelvin Gastelum was looking to score the biggest win of his young mixed martial arts (MMA) career when he met UFC legend and former champion Vitor Belfort in the main event of last night’s (Sat., March 11, 2017) UFC Fight Night 106 from the Olympic Training Center in Fortaleza, Brazil.

And after the expected initial moments from the still-powerful and fast “The Phenom,” Gastelum scored exactly that with a pinpoint series of power punches that dropped Belfort on two occasions, with the second finally leading referee “Big John” McCarthy to save a bloodied Belfort and call off the fight.

Gastelum made the most of his post-fight octagon camera time by calling out longtime former middleweight champ Anderson Silva for June’s UFC 212 in Rio, but it remains to be seen if the 25-year-old rising star will get that massive of a match his next time out to the octagon.

In the meantime, check out the video highlights of Gastelum’s biggest-ever win here:

Kelvin Gastelum made a successful return to middleweight this past December, scoring an impressive TKO victory over Tim Kennedy at UFC 206 in Toronto, Canada.

Now, the former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner is gearing up for a pivotal bout with a legendary former champion, as he’s set to meet Vitor Belfort in the main event of this weekend’s (March 11, 2017) UFC Fight Night 106 from Brazil.

“The Phenom” has lost three out of his last four bouts, with all three of those losses coming by way of stoppage at the hands of Chris Weidman, Ronaldo Souza and Gegard Mousasi. Gastelum, however, is still expecting the ‘best’ version of the Brazilian knockout artist:

“I prepared for the best Vitor,” Gastelum told MMAjunkie. “I know he’s coming off two losses. I know nobody wants to lose three times in a row, so he’s kind of got his back up against the wall in this fight.

“I feel like whenever somebody has their back up against the wall, that’s when they react the hardest and react the quickest, so I expect the best version of Vitor on Saturday.”

The 25-year-old Gastelum acknowledges that he has a big fight in front of him, and although he admits that he respects the 39-year-old Belfort, he also said that the respect will be gone once the cage door closes:

“For sure, this is a big deal for me,” Gastelum said. “It’s a big deal to fight a guy like Vitor. I know how much of a big deal he is, and I give him the respect that he deserves, but once that cage door closes, that respect is gone for 25 minutes.

“I’m very confident in my abilities to strike with him, too. So for sure I’m looking to get a knockout, but also I’m not going to be dumb to where I’m going to play just his game. We’re going to do MMA. This is MMA, so we’ll do MMA.”

Do you expect Gastelum to continue his momentum against Belfort?
