In the UFC Fight Island 2 co-main event middleweight contenders Jack Hermansson and Kelvin Gastelum square off. ‘The Joker’ is looking to bounce back after suffering a second-round TKO loss to Jared Cannonier last time out. Gastelum is also hoping to get back in the win column after dropping back-to-back- defeats to middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and Darren Till. Who’s going to win? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think…
Jordan Ellis: I am heavily favouring Kelvin Gastelum heading into this one. I believe consecutive losses will have sparked a fire in him and we will see the very best version of Gastelum tonight. Hermansson is a tricky opponent for anyone at 185lbs but I think Gastelum will ba able to defend his takedown attempts and dominate this fight on the feet with his aggressive boxing.
Prediction: Kelvin Gastelum
Abhinav Kini: Both fighters are coming off defeats but I feel Kelvin Gastelum will get the job done over Jack Hermansson. Hermansson is coming off a knockout defeat and Gastelum packs heavy power. Gastelum is also notably a wrestler at heart so it won’t be the easiest time taking him down to Hermansson’s world. Add in the fact that Gastelum has had a considerably long layoff since November and seems to be in a good place, I predict he’ll win by knockout in the second or third round and remind the world why he was rated so highly in the first place.
Prediction: Kelvin Gastelum
Ryan Maccarthy: Kelvin Gastelum has a knack for always bringing the fight to his opponent. Both of these men are coming off tough defeats. It’s a huge bout for both of these fighters. Gastelum has lost 2 in a row to top contender Darren Till and middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. I expect Gastelum to come out hot and take it to Hermansson. I’m going with Gastelum via UD.
Prediction: Kelvin Gastelum
Eoin McKenna: In the Co-main, I see Hermansson shocking the fans with a second-round KO and finish. Gastelum is coming from a long lay off and seemed to be playing it safe in his last fight against Till, with both of them coming off the back of losses. I see an overly zealous Gastelum getting put to sleep by Hermansson in the 2nd round.
Prediction: Jack Hermansson
Ryan Galloway: After seeing Gastelum on the scales it’s hard to pick against him. Coming off back to back loses he’s going to be bringing his A game so I can see him either finishing Hermansson late or winning a decision.
Prediction: Kelvin Gastelum
Ryan Jarrell: Kelvin Gastelum is an absolute beast. This guys has a relentless style and has improved his overall skillset tremendously since we first saw him on TUF. On the other hand Hermansson is a tough fighter with a lot of power and the ability to get the finish. Gastelum better not make a mistake and leave an opening because the Joker will capitalize and has proven he has the ability to close the show. I believe Gastelum will resort to his wrestling here and control the fight this way en route to an important win putting him back in Title contention. Gastelum by UD.

Kelvin Gastelum is in a good place after what was a disappointing 2019.
Gastelum was set to challenge for the middleweight title in February only for then champion Robert Whittaker to pull out after the weigh-ins. He would then face Israel Adesanya for the interim middleweight title but would lose the decision after a five-round war.
Gastelum returned seven months later at UFC 244 — something he later revealed was way too early after the Adesanya fight — and suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Darren Till following an underwhelming performance.
In a recent media scrum ahead of his UFC Fight Island 2 fight with Jack Hermansson this weekend, Gastelum admits he underwent depression afterwards and was in a bad place mentally as well as physically.
“Last year in February, I was supposed to fight for the title. In my head, I was going to be the world champion,” Gastelum said (via MMA Fighting). “Then that didn’t happen. Fought in April, lost. Fought in November and lost.
“I think I did go through a little bit of depression. I gained like 30 pounds. Had an injury. Had to recover from that. So I had to battle some demons in my off time.”
Gastelum Ready To Go Again
In addition, Gastelum also had to deal with some personal issues behind the scenes.
However, it is now all behind him as he feels there is a resurgence within him as he notably enjoyed the process for this particular camp.
“I’m actually in a really good place, mentally and physically, which really wasn’t the case for my last two fights,” Gastelum said. “I’m not putting any excuses. There’s a lot of things that go behind the scenes for a lot of fighters but it’s in the past, it’s neither here nor there.
“Now I’m in a good place mentally, physically. I feel really good coming into this fight. I battled [my demons], I conquered them, and here I am, ready to go.”
Although many things are in the past now, Gastelum still hopes to have a rematch with Till down the line.
“I thought I wanted a rematch before,” Gastelum added. “I lost to guys like Neil Magny. I lost to Tyron Woodley. I felt like maybe I’d like to have a rematch with those guys. But the feeling that I got after fighting Till, I’ve never wanted a rematch more than I want that. I would love to run that back.
“All respect to Darren Till. He had a great, phenomenal game plan that night. He beat me fair and square. But anybody that knows me, anybody that knows my style and that has seen me in my fights in the past, knows that wasn’t me fighting at 100 percent. So I’d love to be able to run it back.”

Jack Hermansson believes he will score a third-round stoppage win when he squares off against former middleweight title challenger Kelvin Gastelum in the co-main event on July 15.
Hermansson is looking to bounce back from a tough loss against Jared Cannonier last time out at UFC Copenhagen. ‘The Joker’ started well in the September 2019 bout but things went south in round two. He was caught with a beautiful uppercut that sent him tumbling to the floor. ‘The Killa Gorilla’ lived up to his nickname by seizing the moment and finishing the fight.
After being linked with a fight against former 185lb champion, Chris Weidman the European standout out was eventually matched against TUF winner Gastelum who is coming off back-to-back losses to Israel Adesanya and Darren Till.
Speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA Hermansson revealed his long-held admiration for his July 18 opponent, he said.
“I think he’s a great opponent and I have been following him for years. I watched that season of the Ultimate Fighter that he won. He’s a great fighter and as you mentioned the Adesanya fight. When he is on his best he is really, really good and that’s the guy I’m thinking I will face on ‘Fight Island’.
The 32-year-old believes fighting such a dangerous opponent will bring out the best in him, he said.
“I need to be on my best as well to be able to beat him. Knowing that he is so good is going to sharpen me (and) bring the best out of me as well. I believe that I really need to do those adjustments from the last fight, be unpredictable and use all of my tools to win the fight – I think that is key.”
While Hermansson would prefer an easy nights work against Gastelum, he understands that is unlikely. Nonetheless, the Sweedish fighters predicts he will get the finish in July 15 in the third and final round.
“I would prefer an early finish but when I see it happen, I’m seeing a long, grueling fight. Three rounds and me finishing the fight at the end of the third round,” Hermansson said.
