Middleweight title challenger Kelvin Gastelum is the latest fighter to voice his concerns on the ‘escalating’ Conor McGregor & Khabib Nurmagomedov feud.

Wednesday, April 3, 2019, is going to cast a dark shadow on mixed martial arts. That is because that’s the day the McGregor & Nurmagomedov feud took an even darker turn previously imagined. The two fighters volleyed hateful, insulting tweets back and forth at one another until UFC President Dana White stepped in to bring some much-needed levity to the conversation. While White’s intervention may have simmered the rivalry, lines have been crossed.

Gastelum, who fights Israel Adesanya for the interim middleweight in the co-main event of UFC 236, is no stranger to trash talking. But even he thinks the lines have been crossed.

“I think there are some lines that shouldn’t be crossed,” Gastelum said at a media event on Thursday (via MMAJunkie). “And this rivalry that’s going on right now is escalating to a point where it shouldn’t have to, you know what I mean?”

Many fans and media personalities have suggested that if the trash talking persists, or worse, continues to escalate, someone could get hurt. Gastelum fears the same ending may be in sight.

“I feel like if it keeps escalating the way it is, somebody is going to end up getting hurt or shot, or something. I truly believe that.”

As mentioned above, Gastelum can hold his own in the trash talking game. His digs on Robert Whittaker were though to be harsh at the time. But when it comes to things like family and religion, well that’s just something you shouldn’t mess with.

“You shouldn’t mess with people’s wives, you shouldn’t mess with people’s lives or their religion, absolutely,” Gastelum said.

UFC 236 takes place April 13 from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier will serve as the main event.

“Stylebender” will compete against Kelvin Gastelum for the interim 185-pound title in the co-main event of UFC 236. Speaking to Submission Radio recently, however, the Nigerian striker was asked about a possible future superfight with light heavyweight king Jon Jones.

Unlike the long-discussed superfight between Jones and Anderson Silva that never was, Adesanya thinks a fight between himself and “Bones” will actually happen (via MMA Mania):

“Jones and Silva have spoken about fighting each other for years as well, but that never came to fruition,” Adesanya said. “This I feel is different. So yeah, I look forward to that challenge as well.”

During fight week at UFC 235 before his title defense against Anthony Smith, Jones acknowledged he’d likely one day share the Octagon with Adesanya. “Stylebender” believes Jones is one of the “smart ones” taking notice of his rise to the top:

“That shows you how serious they’re taking me, the smart ones, how much they know I’m a threat, how serious they’re taking me.”

“Like, [Jones] mentioned it on fight week of 235 or whatever, and then I went back two weeks prior on messages with Eugene when I put the question out there, how are we going to beat Jon Jones? And he kind of just laid down the rough blueprint. And I blurred a lot of it out, but yeah, we’re focusing on Gastelum.”

Israel Adesanya vows to roll over title contender Kelvin Gastelum when they meet inside of the Octagon at the UFC 236 pay-per-view event.

The reason for this fight is due to UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker being sidelined due to a hernia. Since Adesanya (16-0) signed with the UFC, he is 5-0 in the Octagon where he has made his name known as a rising prospect in the division.

This fight at UFC 236 will mark his sixth octagon appearance in 14 months, which means he’s kept busy. On the flip side, Gastelum has has fought just once in that same timeframe. While talking to the media, “Stylebender” has the belief that he has a big advantage.

“Momentum’s a powerful force, and it keeps on rolling,” Adesanya told MMA Junkie. “I’m going to roll over Kelvin.”

In the mind of the rising title contender, he thinks other fighters will follow in his footsteps when it comes to his strategy of fighting often in hopes of rising in the rankings.

“I think people are taking notes now,” Adesanya said. “From February of last year my debut to February of this year, that’s five fights in one year. Dana even said: ‘If you want to stay relevant, stay active.’ I’ve been doing this, apart from the Thai’s. In the western world apart from ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, no one is as active as me. People are taking notes now.

“Jon Jones says he wants to fight four times this year as a champ. Last I heard people were fighting like twice. I think Robert Whittaker fought once in the last year. I’m keeping that same energy. I’m going to stay active.”

The UFC 236 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the the UFC’s streaming service, Fight Pass.
