The pair were in attendance to support the aforementioned Volkanovski in his bid to become a two-weight world champion. While many expected Makhachev to be too strong for the pint-sized powerhouse from down under, nothing could be further from the truth. Makhachev did manage to implement his heavy, wrestling-based strategy, but each time, Volkanovski made it back to his feet and nearly knocked out the Dagestan delegate in the closing minute.

This though, made it all the more difficult for both the revenge-seeking Adesanya, who fights Alex Pereria in a rematch that will be legacy-defining for “Stylebender” to watch. Dan Hooker, who is currently out of action due to an arm injury, also grimaced at his teammates’ misfortune.

Israel Adesanya devastated by Buffer’s ”And Still” call

Both of the CKB fighters looked fairly confident, jovial even, as they awaited the, in their minds, already foregone conclusion of the evening that would instill Alexander Volkanovski as the 155lb champion, and solidify his “pound for pound” number one spot.

As the legendary Bruce Buffer announced “and still”, all joy drained from the Oceanic majority in the crowd. Their hero for the evening was robbed of his crowning glory. Israel Adesanya sinks into his seat with his head in his hands, as Dan Hooker loudly exclaims “What The F**k was that?”, apparently bemused at the judge’s scorecards. The clip then cuts to Volkanovski’s post-fight speech, which appears to leave Israel Adesanya in tears, or at least very close to it.

The member of the team that seems to have accepted the news best is the man who actually lost the fight. Alexander Volkanovski seems unwavering in his will to be the best, only more determined to continue to prove he is one of the all-time greats. With Yair Rodriguez defeating Josh Emmett so soundly, he will be next in line at 145 lbs. Islam Makhachev though is still firmly within Volkanovski’s line of sight.

Israel Adesanya has been scheduled to defend his belt against Robert Whittaker in their long-awaited rematch at UFC 271 on February 12th.

According to MMA fighting, ‘Stylebender’ and ‘The Reaper’ have both begun talks to schedule their rematch, however, no contracts have been signed yet. The promotion will be hoping they can get this highly anticipated rematch scheduled soon.

The two fighters previously met back in 2019 at UFC 243 where Adesanya was able to dispatch of Whittaker by knockout in the second round. From then on Adesanya had gone on to successfully defend his middleweight belt twice with a decision victory over Yoel Romero and a flawless performance in his stoppage win over Paulo Costa. Before attempting to push for the Light heavyweight Championship and double champ status. However, he was unsuccessful in his attempt and was handed his first MMA loss by Jan Blachowicz at UFC 259.

The Last Stylebender then returned to the middleweight division to secure his third title defence when he picked up a unanimous decision victory over Marvin Vettori in their rematch in June 2021.

Israel Adesanya Will Face A Revitalized Robert Whittaker

Following on from his KO loss to Adesanya, The Reaper began his path back to title contention. This process began with two wins in 2020 where Whittaker was able to secure unanimous decision victories over both Darren Till and Jared Cannonier. He then went on to extend his winning streak after beating Kelvin Gastelum in his most recent outing back in April 2021.

Since moving to middleweight only Adesanya has been able to get the best of Whittaker who holds a 10-1 record during his time at 185 pounds. Whittaker will be looking to avenge his only loss in this division come February.

In what is a long-awaited rematch, who do you see leaving the octagon UFC Middleweight Champion of the world that night?

Ronaldo Souza not impressed by the way that rising prospect Israel Adesanya made it to a title shot.

The promotion has already booked Adesanya fighting Kelvin Gastelum for the interim UFC middleweight title in the co-main event of UFC 236. For Souza, who has been a title contender for years now, has made his stance on the young buck known.

In his mind, the performance that led Adesanya to a title shot is not impressive. It should be noted that before this UFC 236 fight was announced, Souza was targeting a fight with Gastelum.

Souza explained why he feels Adesanya doesn’t deserve his title opportunity during a recent appearance on ESPN’s Ariel Helwani MMA Show.

”I don’t know why the UFC put him to fight for the title,” Souza stated (via MMAMania.com). “He hasn’t done enough. Because he never fought against top fighters, you know? Okay, he beat Derek Brunson, but I’m a jiu-jitsu fighter and I beat Derek Brunson twice. And the second time, when I kicked the Derek Brunson’s head, my eyes were closed. I did better than him twice, and in the second time my eyes were closed. Why the UFC put this guy to cut my line? I don’t know. But he doesn’t deserve to fight for the title. He don’t deserve, 100 percent. Anderson is out of the rank and out of shape. He doesn’t deserve it.”

Souza is set to fight Yoel Romero in a rematch on April 27 at UFC on ESPN 3.

Israel Adesanya Vows To “Roll Over” Kelvin Gastelum

Israel Adesanya vows to roll over title contender Kelvin Gastelum when they meet inside of the Octagon at the UFC 236 pay-per-view event.

The reason for this fight is due to UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker being sidelined due to a hernia. Since Adesanya (16-0) signed with the UFC, he is 5-0 in the Octagon where he has made his name known as a rising prospect in the division.

This fight at UFC 236 will mark his sixth octagon appearance in 14 months, which means he’s kept busy. On the flip side, Gastelum has has fought just once in that same timeframe. While talking to the media, “Stylebender” has the belief that he has a big advantage.

“Momentum’s a powerful force, and it keeps on rolling,” Adesanya told MMA Junkie. “I’m going to roll over Kelvin.”

In the mind of the rising title contender, he thinks other fighters will follow in his footsteps when it comes to his strategy of fighting often in hopes of rising in the rankings.

“I think people are taking notes now,” Adesanya said. “From February of last year my debut to February of this year, that’s five fights in one year. Dana even said: ‘If you want to stay relevant, stay active.’ I’ve been doing this, apart from the Thai’s. In the western world apart from ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, no one is as active as me. People are taking notes now.

“Jon Jones says he wants to fight four times this year as a champ. Last I heard people were fighting like twice. I think Robert Whittaker fought once in the last year. I’m keeping that same energy. I’m going to stay active.”

The UFC 236 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the the UFC’s streaming service, Fight Pass.

Jon Jones Doesn’t See Similarities To Israel Adesanya

UFC 234’s Israel Adesanya has drawn comparisons to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. “Bones,” however, doesn’t see the resemblance in the Octagon other than having a similar body structure and the same skin color. “We have similar body types and we’re both black,” joked Jones during a recent interview with UFC. “And that’s about […]

“And that’s about it. I don’t think we fight alike, I don’t think we fight similar, I do a lot of wrestling, heavy ground-and-pound, a lot of submissions, I strike in both stances. I feel like our games are very different,” he added while saying he feels Israel will be a force in the fight game.”

Even though he might not see the comparisons to ‘The Last Stylebender,’ he has respect for the rising force.

“But I do respect him, a lot. I think he is going to be a force to be reckoned with. He is great for the sport, great talker and he finishes fights. He is a very exciting young man.”

Jones does seem to appreciate what “Stylebender” brings to the sport. That being said , a possible dream match-up of “Bones” vs. Adesanya is extremely unlikely at this point in their careers.

Adesanya will have his hands full at UFC 234 this weekend as he faces another legend that he has drawn comparisons to – Anderson “The Spider” Silva.

Rising star Israel Adesanya believes his co-main event fight with former middleweight champion Anderson Silva is the driving reason behind the quick sellout in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

The 29-year-old unbeaten kickboxing champion turned professional MMA fighter oozes confidence and a swagger all of his own. His carefree attitude was on display earlier this week while speaking with ESPN.

“I’m just going to do me, and Whittaker, that’s his Christmas gift for the next five years; [it’s] me being on this card with Anderson that made the show sell out in 15 minutes,” Adesanya said.

“This show wouldn’t have sold out the way it did without me and Anderson, so he’s [Whittaker] welcome. He gets the pay-per-view points, he gets the accolades and what not. And yeah, good for him, he knows what’s up, even he knows it. So he can enjoy it for the next 10 years.”

While it is obviously impossible to determine how many tickets were sold in lieu of each fighter, there is no denying both Adesanya and middleweight champion Robert Whittaker were driving forces in the nearly 15,000 seat sell out.

As for “Stylebender’s” opponent, well, Adesanya doesn’t seem too concerned with the 43-year-old’s skillset. He continued to claim he knows Anderson better than he knows himself.

“I know him better than he knows himself,” he said. “My team’s been studying him as well and I’ve been studying him for years. So I just know; I feel I can mimic him; some of his fights I can actually mimic the sequences that he’s used to finish the guys off, or to get the guys started before he finishes them off.

“I just know too much, and the difference is the way that I’m playing the game: the mind. My mind is different, I’m Player 1.”

UFC 234 takes place Saturday, February 9, 2019, at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
