Kevin Lee (19-7) recently posed for a photo with Dana White in a cryptic Facebook post that could mean a return to the UFC octagon.

Kevin Lee’s last MMA action came under the banner of Eagle FC in March of last year where he defeated another ex-UFC fighter Diego Sanchez by Unanimous Decision. Prior to this bout, Lee’s last fight in the UFC ended with a Unanimous Decision loss vs. Daniel Rodriguez in March of 2021.

The 30-year-old veteran and former title challenger has a decorated mixed martial arts resume, having fought a number of top contenders, former champions and notable fighters over his 7-year stretch in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Beginning his UFC career against Al Iaquinta, Lee has been in the cage with the likes of Tony Ferguson, Edson Barboza, Rafael Dos Anjos, and Charles Oliveira.

Kevin Lee’s Cryptic Post with Dana White

Having one of the most stacked UFC resumes, Lee is widely recognized as a top talent who could just never get over that final hump to be elite. However, a recent post on Kevin Lee’s Facebook has MMA fans speculating if a return to the UFC octagon is in the works.

The “Motown Phenom” is in many ways a fan favorite and coming back to the UFC could be the start of his redemption story. While Lee couldn’t break through for the title as a younger fighter, the time away from the promotion could mean a more mature and polished version of Kevin Lee.

The only thing that MMA and UFC fans around the world can do is wait and see if his Facebook post means that he is in fact returning to the promotion. As fans await the return of the “Motown Phenom”, be on the lookout for fight news involving Kevin Lee.

Kevin Lee is aiming to sign with another promotion as Russian promotion Eagle FC hasn’t been hosting events due to the war in Ukraine.

Lee, a former UFC lightweight contender and welterweight prospect, recently did an interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto regarding his fighting future:

“There’s so much going on in the world (that) they’re not able to throw fights on. But before we even made the contract, this is why I said they gave me such a great contract in the first place, technically I’m signed with them, but I can go to different promotions too.

“You know, I could go (and) I can shop around, I’m basically a free agent right now. But I have that backup of having that contract. But they gave me such a good contract because I can move around, I can bounce around, and that’s what we’re looking to do right now. Some of these things are so unpredictable, right? Who would predict that the world would be in the place that it’s in from last year?

“So now that it’s in this space, they gave me enough freedom and flexibility that you wouldn’t get with other contracts.”

Lee continued: “Especially at my age now, I’ve got a few more years left of me really pursuing this thing that I need to give it my full and undivided attention.”

Okamoto then asked Lee if going back to the UFC is a possibility:

“That’s (idea has) been floated out there a few times, and I have thought about it, but I’m not putting no energy towards it to be honest with you. I feel like there’s so many opportunities in this sport and there’s a big opportunity now with PFL. You know they just signed Jake Paul. They’re making a lot of waves outside of the fighting realm, you know, outside of the bubble the UFC has created.

“There’s a lot of opportunity outside of it and I’m one of the most experienced guys. You can’t look at anybody who’s unsigned from the UFC that has my record, has fought the people that I’ve fought, and has my age and my upside to me either. So I would almost be hurting my leverage if I was just to straight go back with the UFC right now.

“So it’s something that I’m kind of interested (in), but it would have to be the right offer, it’d have to be the right fight, it’d have to be something other than just to say I’m a UFC fighter. I’ve been there and done that. That doesn’t do that much for me. A million dollars sounds a whole lot better.”

After stating that he’d like to fight Jake Paul in PFL’s superfight division, Lee also said he’d be interested in regular season match ups at 170 lbs, which could be very interesting to see. One could think he’s a better lightweight than welterweight, as he’s gone 0-2 thus far at 170 lbs. However, he’s also missed weight four times at 155 lbs throughout his 26-fight (19-7) career.

His lone fight in Eagle FC, which went down in March of last year, was contested at 165 lbs. But, should he sign with PFL, regular season match ups happen too often for him to consistently make the 156 lb lightweight limit.

Lee, a former interim lightweight title challenger under the banner of the UFC, parted ways with the organization back in 2021 following a unanimous decision loss against Californian kickboxing talent, Daniel Rodriguez.

Penning a multi-fight deal to compete for Eagle FC – headed up by former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Lee debuted in the promotion with a unanimous decision win over fellow UFC veteran, Diego Sanchez in a 165lbs main event back in March of last year.

For Rakhmonov, the undefeated finishing ace, was scheduled to co-headline UFC Vegas 66 next weekend against Texas striker, Geoff Neal, however, an undisclosed injury has ruled the latter from proceedings.

At the time of publication, the Kazakh contender has yet to be rebooked against Neal, and it is currently unknown if the promotion will attempt to keep him on the card against a different opponent.

According to the above-mentioned, Sonnen, however, if he were to play matchmaker, he would look to offer the previously noted, Lee another chance in the promotion – in the form of a short-notice fight with Rakhmonov.

“I had a suggestion of Kevin Lee,” Chael Sonnen said on this YouTube channel. “Now, you guys know, a lot of that is personal, I would like to see Kevin Lee get back – Kevin Lee is coming off a win just to remind you. I didn’t like how Kevin Lee left (the UFC) in the first place. Kevin was hurt with a knee injury – returns off of an injury, which is never great for anybody. Then you’ve got the layoff which is never great for anybody, and then he goes to a weight class that he’s never competed in, which is never great for anybody.”

“…Rakhmonov got back to me, and he said he would do the Kevin Lee fight,” Chael Sonnen continued. “I respect it. I have no bigger point than that, I am just sharing with you.”

Boasting an impressive 16-0 professional record and currently holding the #10 rank in the official welterweight rankings, Rakhmonov most recently submitted Neil Magny with a guillotine choke, following consecutive finishes over Carlston Harris, Michel Prazeres, and Alex Oliveira.

Undefeated UFC welterweight prospect Shavkat Rakhmonov has recently taken a jab at former lightweight and welterweight talent Kevin Lee, who recently called out Khamzat Chimaev despite not being signed with the UFC himself. It’s hard to imagine this fight would even be put together, considering Lee left the UFC over a year ago. He also has three fights left on his deal with Eagle FC, following a four-fight contract he signed with the promotion in late 2021.

Lee defeated The Ultimate Fighter 1 winner Diego Sanchez in his Eagle FC debut, a lackluster performance that gave ‘The MoTown Phenom’ his first win in over two years, improving his record to 19-7 in the process. However, he’s still only 3-5 in his last eight.

It’s a reasonable question, because he’s the perfect next match up for Chimaev according to many fans and media members.

For one, Rakhmonov is currently under the UFC umbrella, and for two, it’d be an undefeated versus undefeated match up.

Rakhmonov just lost his match up with Geoff Neal, who was forced to withdraw from their January showdown with an injury. Neal is the only man to knock out both Mike Perry and Vicente Luque, and Rakhmonov is currently in search of another dance partner considering.

Rakhmonov is 16-0 (4-0 UFC) as a professional with finishes in all 16 wins (8 knockout, 8 submission), while Chimaev is 12-0 (6-0 UFC) as a professional with 11 finishes (6 knockout, 5 submission).

Should the UFC make this fight next, someone’s 0 will have to go.

But, these are perhaps the no. 1 and no. 2 hottest prospects in the sport right now, they’re both 28 years old, they’re both undefeated with a combined record of 28-0 (10-0 UFC with 9 finishes), and they’d probably end up rematching for the belt someday down the road.

Who knows, maybe they’d even have a trilogy as well.
