UFC 216 headliner Kevin Lee has risen from relative obscurity to fighting for the interim lightweight title in a little over a year.

Now riding an impressive five-fight win streak including four finishes in a row, Lee is set to take on Tony Ferguson in the main event of the pay-per-view (PPV) card from Las Vegas on October 7, while longtime flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson takes a back seat as he attempts to secure his record-seeking 11th title defense in a row against Ray Borg in the co-main.

While it may seem unfair for Lee to headline UFC 216 over the far more accomplished ‘Mighty Mouse,’ the Detroit, Michigan native actually sees it as favorable for the flyweight champ, who has historically not been a ratings draw compared to his fellow UFC champion colleagues.

““I think that’s the way it should be. The UFC knows that…

“Look, Demetrious if anything, Demetrious should be thanking me. He’s getting pay-per-view points for the first time in his career, and it’s going to be because of me. So, if anything, I’m looking for a lil’ Christmas gift from Demetrious… I think the demand is definitely out here, more for this fight, than especially Demetrious vs. Ray Borg. I mean come on. Demetrious has to give it up to me. I’m putting money in his pocket; how can he be upset? When we do the press conference, and I’m sitting right next to him, I’ll let him know.”

Johnson notoriously turned down a super fight with former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw in favor of a fight with the far lesser-known Borg, much to the public chagrin of UFC President Dana White.

The Borg fight was initially scheduled for September’s UFC 215; however, a last-minute illness forced the challenger out of the fight and off the card.

Whether or not Johnson’s refusal to fight Dillashaw played any part in his taking a back seat to Lee vs Ferguson remains unknown, but Lee figures his fight with Ferguson is the main event for a reason.

“I think people are excited to see more out of me, and I’m excited to show it to them. Tony, he can take a shot. He can keep moving. He even scrambles well on the ground. I feel like we will have a lot of different exchanges, a lot of momentum. I’m excited for it.”

Do you agree with Lee vs. Ferguson headlining over ‘Mighty Mouse’s attempt to make history?

Former Champ: UFC Is Throwing ‘Sh–‘ At The Wall

In the absence of UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, the promotion has implemented an interim 155-pound title between top-ranked competitors Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee.

The fight will serve as the main event of UFC 216 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada next month (Sat. October 7, 2017). The winner of the bout is assumed to take on McGregor upon his return to mixed martial arts (MMA) action, while most believe the Irishman’s next Octagon stint will come in the form of a trilogy bout against Nate Diaz.

Ex-UFC lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez recently joined the UFC Unfiltered podcast to discuss the interim title bout, and claimed that at this point the UFC is simply ‘throwing sh*t at the wall and hope it sticks’ (quotes via MMA Mania):

“It seems like with the interim belt, and the guys that are fighting for the interim belt, it just seems like they are throwing shit at the wall and hope it sticks. It seems that is where we are. I mean, the champion is not fighting, so these are the things you have to do while you wait. So we’re just trying to make a matchup here.

“In the meantime, me and Justin Gaethje is the biggest matchup in the lightweight division, the most exciting, even before this interim belt with these guys who are fighting. Me and Justin will be the most exciting fight in the division in the next couple of months until the champion comes back to defend the belt. So, right now were just buying time and trying to make a move becasue we are all going to be chasing after him.”

UFC 216 is now just around the corner and all focus is on the title fight where Tony Ferguson will take on Kevin Lee for the coveted interim lightweight title. UFC 216 will go down on October 7th and despite the postponement of the Demetrious Johnson Vs.  Ray Borg fight for the flyweight title, the highlight of the evening will still be Ferguson Vs. Kevin Lee.

The Johnson Vs. Borg fight was initially scheduled for UFC 215, but unfortunately Borg had no choice but to withdraw due to sickness and the fight has now been pushed to be included as part of the fight card for UFC 216. However, it is apparent that as the fight night draws closer, the promotion is still behind the Ferguson Vs. Lee fight and have not jumped ship to the Johnson Vs. Borg fight.

Ferguson is coming into this fight frustrated by the fact that he has waited a long time to take on Russian rival Khabib Nurmagomedov, but has not been able to since Nurmagomedov has been out of action. Instead, Ferguson will get a chance to prove himself against Lee who is most certainly a worthy challenger to say the least.

Lee is currently ranked 7th as per the official UFC rankings. He last fight was a victory against Michael Chiesa, albeit a controversial one. However, a lot of people still feel Lee does not have what it takes to beat Ferguson, going by past records and stats. Ferguson is the strong favorite going into this fight. Lee has shown good form recently, but Ferguson is just plain stronger and has experience fighting against some of the best of the sport such as Rafael dos Anjos, Edson Barboza and Josh Thompson. Having said that, it would be ill advised to write off Lee, he might be the underdog here, but he certainly has what it takes to cause an upset.
