Conor McGregor isn’t “the man” of the UFC anymore. The moniker now belongs to lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. That’s according to UFC president Dana White.

White recently did a Q&A with The Boston Globe, where he said the Russian champion calls the shots now.

“Khabib is the man now,” White said. “Conor isn’t the man anymore, so Khabib gets to sit back and call the shots.”

McGregor has been campaigning for a return fight for some time now. He attempted to get a fight with Frankie Edgar done, however, White shut that down pretty fast, suggesting the bout doesn’t make sense. In an interesting twist, White did name the winner of Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz at UFC 244 as a possibility.

He also listed off Justin Gaethje, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, and Nurmagomedov as possible opponents for the returning Irishman.

“Next month at Madison Square Garden, we’ve got Diaz vs Masvidal, sold out,” White said. “So whoever wins that fight could fight McGregor. We’ve got ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, we’ve got Justin Gaethje, but what Conor wants right now really is the Khabib rematch. So we’ll see how that whole thing plays out.

“But if you’re Khabib, you got the Tony Ferguson fight, George St. Pierre wants to fight, and you’ve got the Conor McGregor fight.”

What do you think about White saying Khabib is the man now and not McGregor?

Brian Ortega: If Anyone Can Beat Khabib, It’s Tony Ferguson – Or Me

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the most dominant champions mixed martial arts (MMA) has ever seen. He has admitted he doesn’t have much time left in his career, and plans to retire soon. If he can remain undefeated, reaching a mark of 30-0 before hanging up his gloves, he has a case for being the greatest of all time.

However, former UFC featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega believes “The Eagle” is beatable. Speaking to “Kumite TV” (H/T MMA Junkie) recently, Ortega believes, if anyone can beat Nurmagomedov, it’s ex-interim 155-pound champion Tony Ferguson. If not, Ortega believes he can get the job done himself.

“Tony is an amazing athlete – (and) he’s a great jiu-jitsu guard player as well,” Ortega said. “But when I see things, there’s just certain positions that I feel like I’m better at than certain people, and vice-versa, they’re better than me in certain positions.

“But the positions that Khabib is amazing at, I’m equally as amazing from the bottom of the coin. I feel like if anyone’s going to beat him, it’s Ferguson. And if not, we’re going to have to wait until I come up.”

Ferguson has racked up a lengthy win streak in the lightweight division, but a matchup with Nurmagomedov has long eluded him due to various injuries and other mishaps. Now, however, it seems like the stars might be perfectly aligned for the two to finally square off in early 2020.

What do you make of Ortega’s comments on Khabib and Ferguson?

Georges St-Pierre Confirms He’d End Retirement To Fight Khabib

One of the biggest fights that can be made in mixed martial arts (MMA) today is a scrap between Georges St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov. St-Pierre retired from MMA earlier this year, noting that he made the decision after the UFC showed no interest in making a fight between himself and “The Eagle.”

Now, however, UFC president Dana White seems to have changed his stance on the matter. St-Pierre recently spoke to ESPN’s Mark Kriegel, noting he’d end his retirement for the right fight. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“The word retirement doesn’t mean anything right now,” St-Pierre said. “If the right fight came along, they know where to find me.”

St-Pierre admitted again that a fight with Nurmagomedov was one fight that he tried to make happen before ending his MMA run. However, if everything aligned perfectly, and the money was right, St-Pierre said he’d unretire to fight Nurmagomedov.

“We tried to make the right fight but it didn’t work,” St-Pierre said. “If everything is aligned, if everything contractually is good, as of now, yes I would (fight Nurmagomedov).”

If St-Pierre does want to fight Nurmagomedov, all parties involved need to act fast, as “The Eagle” recently admitted the window on his fight career is closing fast after saying he doesn’t plan on fighting more than three years from now.

Do you think St-Pierre and Nurmagomedov will ever fight inside the Octagon?

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has been adamant that he doesn’t plan on competing in mixed martial arts (MMA) much longer. Nurmagomedov has won 28-straight fights in his career, and is one of the most dominant fighters the sport has ever seen.

Coming off a successful lightweight title defense over Dustin Poirier in Saudi Arabia, Nurmagomedov is expected to take a big legacy fight next against either Tony Ferguson or Georges St-Pierre. Speaking to Arab News, Nurmagomedov discussed his fighting future further, admitting he only has around two to three years of competition left in him. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“I think a couple years. Two or three years, maximum three. I think maybe two years is my opinion,” Nurmagomedov said.

“Because I don’t want to fight all my life, because I know it’s very hard, and I know a lot of new hungry guys are coming, and I know to always be undefeated, undisputed, this is not almost impossible, I think it’s impossible. Because you can watch in history, like soccer, boxing, MMA, everywhere, one day you’re going to lose. You have to know when you need to stop. I think maybe two years.”

In the meantime, currently sporting a record of 28-0, Nurmagomedov’s immediate goal is to reach the 30-0 mark.

“I am focusing on this, before I never thought about this, but right now I’m thinking I’m almost there,” Nurmagomedov said. “28-0 and in the next couple years I’m going to compete because I just became 31-years old, that is not too much for this sport, but for sure I think I’m going to finish, 33 or 34 fights it’s gonna be done.

“But right now I have a couple years to compete. I want to compete with the toughest challengers in the world. Like whatever opponent they give me, I will fight and I’m going to improve my legacy and improve myself. I really want to compete with the best fighters in the world.”
