One of the hottest topics in the mixed martial arts (MMA) world at the moment is who will be next to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title.

The undefeated Russian has been virtually unstoppable inside the cage. He comes off a third-round submission victory over Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi where he successfully retained his title. Now, it looks like Tony Ferguson is the front runner to face “The Eagle” next. A fight that has been booked several times but never fails to fall through due to injury.

However, a superfight with the recently retired Georges St-Pierre seems to be a highly-desired matchup amongst the MMA community as well. “Rush” retired earlier this year after the UFC showed zero interest in booking such a bout.

Now, the tables have turned, and UFC president Dana White has expressed interest in the fight as of late. Speaking on Instagram live, White admitted Nurmagomedov vs. St-Pierre would be “a fine fight to make.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

“Tony fight has to happen first,” White said. “Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib and obviously if Khabib wins that fight, the GSP fight would be a fun fight to make for sure.”

The fight would likely have to take place at lightweight, and given recent pictures of “GSP,” that doesn’t seem to be out of the realm of possibilities, despite what his coach says. Even White is amazed at how great St-Pierre looks physically while retired.

“I don’t know if you guys have seen pictures of GSP but he’s looking really, really, really f*cking skinny right now,” White said. “He just did like a cleanse or something. He’s in ridiculous shape still but he’s super lean. I think right now he’s ten pounds lighter than Khabib is. Something like that, somebody told me, so that’s pretty crazy.”

What do you think about White now being open to booking Nurmagomedov and St-Pierre against each other?

The door is open to Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor 2 according to Khabib’s father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

Although Khabib Nurmagomedov and Ali Abdelaziz don’t want the rematch, Abdulmanap, is open to it, under one condition. It must be in Moscow like Conor McGregor suggested.

“If McGregor wants it, then Moscow is waiting for him. He said once that he has more fans here than Khabib,” he said Zhivina100 (h/t RT Sport) We want to host him in Moscow, he is welcome – we are waiting.”

Although Abdulmanap is open to the fight, he says his son and Khabib Nurmagomedov needs to finish his own business. That is fighting Tony Ferguson, who is the number one contender. Yet, he says that fight won’t happen until after March and they think Madison Square Garden would be a good venue for it.

“Before McGregor we should finish our business with Ferguson,” he stated. “Because he had 28 fights, and runs a 12-fight winning streak in the UFC, just like Khabib. Such winning streaks and such big fights have never happened in the UFC.

“So I think Madison Square Garden is a good place for this fight, but we won’t fight earlier than March.”

Of course, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor fought back at UFC 229 in October of last year. There, it was the undefeated Dagestani lightweight champion who submitted the Irishman in the fourth round to defend his title. Then, a post-fight melee occurred, where the two were suspended by the NSAC.

Whether or not the fight happens again is to be seen but Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father at least has opened the door to it.

“155?,” Khabib Nurmagomedov commented (h/t BJPenn.com).

Although both fighters have wanted that fight, St-Pierre’s coach in Firas Zahabi believes the ship has sailed on 155-pounds.

“Right now I think the ship has sailed on 155,” Zahabi told MMAjunkie recently. “I don’t think Georges will ever do 155. I think there was a time and place and window where Georges would make that sacrifice to do a mega-fight. But I think that window’s passed, personally.”

Why he thinks that is dropping down to 155-pounds is sacrificing a lot in his life.

“He’s older now, and life is good,” Zahabi said. “He’s found a social life, a balance in life of training and family and friends. To leave all that to do a 155 is a big cost in terms of sacrificing energy and preparation. He would have to prep six months to get to that. He would have to set it up to get done. 155 would be work. Is he going to work that much? I think that ship has sailed.

“I’m not talking for Georges. In my opinion, he’ll only come back for a mega-fight. Like a mega-fight,” he concluded. “No titles needed, either. Could be a title. I don’t think that’s really important to him. Like a mega-fight. Only those two names [Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor] that are the names big enough for him and enticing.”

Do you think we will see Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Georges St-Pierre at lightweight?
