It has been an insane week in MMA leading up to the biggest fight in the sport’s history plus we have the Jon Jones saga unfolding right before our eyes. Life is good for us combat sports fan right about now.

Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov square off in UFC 229’s main event this Saturday (Oct. 6 2018) night and it’s sure to be a monumental night. But the recently reinstated “Bones” Jones is making some noise…again.

Jones opened up in a big way in a recent wide-ranging interview with ESPN. In it, he talked about his bouts with depression, his views on his biggest rival “DC”, and his decision to turn down the UFC 230 main event spot opposite Alexander Gustafsson.

MSG Card

Your 15-month suspension coincided nicely with the Nov. 3 show at Madison Square Garden. Were you asked to fight on that card?

“It was offered to me, but by the time it was offered to me, I had about five or six weeks to prepare for the fight. I didn’t want my first fight back to be in a situation where I felt rushed, so I declined.”

The Gus Fight

Are you fighting Alexander Gustafsson on Dec. 29?

“As of right now, that’s something that is on the table and we are in talks, but it looks like I will be. Nothing is signed on my end yet.”

On “DC” Being Stripped

Daniel Cormier is disappointed that he is going to get stripped of the 205-pound title. Do you understand where he is coming from?

“I understand where he is coming from, and I understand his frustration, but I think he needs to look outside himself and see where I’m coming from in this situation. If USADA came to the conclusion that all the science points to this being a complete accident and unintentional, a part of me feels like the belt should be handed back to me. A part of me feels like I shouldn’t even have to fight for the belt against Alexander Gustafsson because I was proven innocent. In a way, the belt was never his in the first place. He was given the belt.”

Fighting Cormier a Third Time

Do you care to fight him a third time?

“No, I don’t. I already have all the marbles when it comes to Daniel Cormier. I’ve beaten him twice. This game has never been personal. What is personal to me is chasing greatness, not individuals. So in the case of myself and Daniel Cormier, he needs to fight myself one more time if he ever wants to be considered one of the all-time greats. I don’t need to fight him again to be considered one of the all-time greats. I have many more years to prove it.”

His Reaction To “DC” Winning The HW Title

What do you think when you saw him win the heavyweight title?

“I was legitimately happy for Daniel Cormier, I felt like he was extremely deserving of becoming a UFC champion, I felt like for the first time, the night he won, he became an actual UFC champion, I think he was an extremely successful light heavyweight, but I don’t ever think he was the light heavyweight champion, I consider myself the light heavyweight champion since 2011, despite what happened. He joined a club of champions, and I was legitimately happy for him because from afar I know how hard of a worker he is, and I think the heavyweight championship couldn’t be in more deserving hands.”

On Fighting In The HW Division

Any interest in fighting him for the heavyweight title?

“Not really. Challenging Daniel Cormier for the heavyweight championship would be me making it personal, and it’s not personal. I’m not the one who went home crying the first and second times we fought. That was him. There’s nothing inside of me that wants to take things from him or make his life harder in any way. I just want what’s rightfully mine. He can have what’s rightfully his and we can all get along.”

USADA

Jon also addressed his role in the infamous USADA “snitching clause”, denying outright that he snitched on anyone in MMA.

According to the arbitrator’s ruling, you received a 30-month reduction in your suspension because you cooperated in providing “substantial assistance” and information to help eliminate doping. As a result, you have been accused of “snitching.”

Did you snitch on anyone?

“USADA asked me to do a lot of things throughout this case, but one thing I didn’t do is snitch on anybody. I definitely didn’t give up any information on anyone in the sport, nor do I know of anybody who’s doing these things in the sport. I think the whole snitching thing is pretty silly. It’s interesting to watch people jump to conclusions about things they don’t know what they are talking about. And that’s all I want to say about that topic.”

Conor McGregor has now criticized Khabib Nurmagomedov’s undefeated record ahead of UFC 229.

It’s hard to impress the “Notorious” one. After all, he is the biggest superstar the sport of MMA has ever seen and he is arguably the most recognizable sports figure on the planet.

McGregor has been highly critical of his fellow lightweight’s performances inside the Octagon. Just last year he flamed Khabib on social media. Saying the Dagestani’s mauling of Edson Barbosa was on par with ‘dogs–t’ despite a lopsided unanimous decision for Nurmagomedov.

Although the Dagestani wrecking machine sports an undefeated record, McGregor is not impressed. As a matter of fact, he thinks Khabib’s unblemished record is flawed.

“I’m not really impressed that much by his record,” McGregor said in an interview with Megan Olivi. “It’s a pretty looking record but if you dig deep, it’s not that pretty. I think it’s very deceiving. Everybody seems to put him on a pedestal, he’s this, he’s that — I don’t see it.”

“He’s a bit timid when it comes to taking a shot. He does not like to take a smack. If you don’t like to take a smack and you fight me, you’re in for a long, long night.”

McGregor went on to discount Khabib’s most recent victory at UFC 223. He was scheduled to fight then-champion Tony Ferguson for the fourth time. Unfortunately, Furguson would injure his knee just days before the fight putting the fight in jeopardy yet again.

Al Iaquinta stepped in on 24 hours notice but Khabib was just too much for the part-time real estate agent.

McGregor now plans on reminding the world he never lost his belt(s) and he is still the king of the 155-pound division.

“He fought an unranked novice let’s say. I don’t believe he’s champion, I don’t believe [Tony] Ferguson is champion.

“I believe they know that, especially now, that the real champion is back.”

Conor McGregor says he’s going to do some serious damage to his archrival Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of this Saturday night’s UFC 229 from Las Vegas.

The undefeated UFC lightweight champion got tired of McGregor’s late arrivals at today’s UFC 229 pre-fight press conference. ‘The Eagle’ rose the belt high and stormed out in a surprising scene. It was an unexpected move that perhaps seemed to out in Nurmagomedov’s favor.

But as he always does, McGregor showed up. He issued a seething reaction to Khabib’s early exit. To him, it was a sign of weakness that he didn’t want to be in his presence. Overall, however, he just hoped that Khabib made weight for the match. The famed Irishman is more than ready to be back fighting following nearly two years out of the octagon.

That has many concerned about betting underdog McGregor’s ability to deal with the favorite Nurmagomedov’s ground game. He paid it little mind at the presser, claiming he’d been wrestling much bigger men.

Ultimately he says it doesn’t matter because he thinks Khabib will wilt early fro his pressure:

“I’ve been grappling and wrestling much heavier men this whole camp. 200 pounders, even yesterday, 200 pounders, 25 minutes straight. You know, I have cut no corners here. I am ready for all outcomes. I feel once I hit him, he’s gonna turn weak, I expect panic from him early. But we are prepared for every single outcome.”

Another Edge

McGregor dove into his other advantage as well, noting that he’s seen it all. It’s tough to argue with that, as he has been in a wide range of positions in the octagon. Most of all, he’s back to enjoy fighting yet again:

“I also don’t give a bollocks. I’ve experienced it all. I’ve got f**king tired in there, I’ve been on my back in there. I have been in every scenario you can be in under the brightest lights in the entire world. I am a veteran. So I am going to go out and do what I came here for, to enjoy it.  I am here to enjoy this because this is what I love.”

Final Prediction

Finally, the Irish fan favorite offered one more brutal prediction for the bout’s outcome. McGregor promised to finish Khabib in a certain violent style:

“I’m going to come out fast from the bell, pressure him, and like I said, send that man’s nose into the nosebleeds.”

Conor McGregor may be coming back to MMA because he loves it. But a $50 million dollar payday doesn’t hurt.

McGregor finally did grace the fans and media in attendance today in Las Vegas at the second press conference for UFC 229.

He also gave a bit of a financial forecast. The Irishman is claiming the event is trending to sell 3.5 million pay-per-views, which will earn him an estimated $50 million dollars:

“We’re estimating around 3 to 3.5 million [pay-per-view buys], I’d say I’ll close in around the $50 million mark,” McGregor replied when asked what his takeaway from UFC 229 would be.”

Many To Thank

McGregor called that potential payday “breathtaking.” He thanked his employers past and present with the UFC:

“So, for a mixed martial artist to make $50 million from a mixed martial arts bout, it’s quite breathtaking. I have to thank my management stable, Paradigm Sports Management. I’ve got to thank Dana White, I’ve got to thank Lorenzo Fertitta and Frank (Fertitta) who schooled me in the game.”

“The new owners…W…what’s the name…WME-IMG? Those guys as well. I haven’t really met them that much but they’ve been good to me so far — Ari (Emmanuel) and those guys. Life is good.”

Changing The Game

McGregor can’t believe how much the MMA landscape has changed since his epic clash with Nate Diaz back in March of 2016.

“To think where we have come from… when I fought Nate Diaz he was on $20,000 to show and $20,000 to win — the game has gone to so many new heights, so quickly and we’re just trying to keep up.

“And it’s a great time to be involved in the sport for myself, the fighters, the promoters, for the managers, for the media in attendance, for the fans, for everyone… times are good so let’s enjoy it. Let’s enjoy these momentous occasions.”

Finally, McGregor upped his finance forecast by saying he’d be a billionaire by the time he hit 25 years old:

“I’m 30 now, say by about 35 I’ll be a billionaire.”
