The undefeated and retired Khabib Nurmagomedov says that he has been training his son since he was just three years old. The now five-year-old child is active in things such as wrestling and gymnastics.

The former UFC world champion, Nurmagomedov discussed his son’s training regiment, at an Eagle FC media scrum. The Dagestani-born fighter explained:

“He started walking on the mat because we have a gym at home, my son is already training and doing gymnastics. He has a good coach that I trust, he already trains in Makhachkala. He started earlier than I did, at 3 and a half years old. I’ll be his wrestling coach.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov also went on to explain the challenges of balancing family time and being a fight promoter for Eagle FC. The former UFC champion said:

“I’m working on that. I always try to have my children fly with me, but when school starts I won’t be able to do that. It’s not something I have to show on Instagram or other mass media. There are things I share with my fans and then there are private family matters.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov hopes his son does not do MMA

Even though his son is being actively trained for the sport, Khabib Nurmagomedov hopes that he does not go into MMA or sambo, but wrestling is fine. One day, his young child was playing with his UFC championship gold. Nurmagomedov said:

“Once when I came home, he fell asleep grabbing my belt. I suppose it’s a good sign, even though he was less than a year old and I don’t suppose he knows what he was doing. Honestly, I don’t want him to go through all what I went through because in fighting most people don’t see the inside.

‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov went on to explain some of the extreme challenges MMA and sambo fighters go through, he added:

“They only see a picture and video tapes, my walkout and my fight but they don’t see the 25 years of work that I went through. How many surgeries I had on my knee, back, hand and ribs. How I almost died while cutting weight. I would like him to do Olympic kind of sport, not sambo but wrestling.” [Transcript courtesy The Mirror]

Islam Makhachev

Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov has claimed that teammate, Islam Makhachev will only land five or six successful defenses of his undisputed crown, admitting that the sport of mixed martial arts will overtake everyone at some point.

Khabib, a former lightweight champion under the banner of the UFC, called time on his professional career in October 2020, after he successfully unified the lightweight crowns with a second round triangle submission win over Justin Gaethje.

As for student and American Kickboxing Academy teammate, Makhachev, the Makhachkala native headlined UFC 280 back in October on ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi, UAE – successfully clinching the vacant title with a second round arm-triangle win over Charles Oliveira.

In the time since, Islam Makhachev has booked a UFC 284 headlining bout against featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski in Perth, Australia next February – attempting to land his first defense of lightweight spoils.

Khabib believes Islam Makhachev needs to land 5 or 6 title defenses

And according to Khabib, his protégé can likely only land five or six successful defenses of his throne before the sport will begin to catch up with him.

“I think he (Islam Makhachev) needs at least five [title defenses],” Khabib Nurmagomedov told Red Corner MMA during a recent interview. “Maybe six. That would be ideal. Six defenses. That’s six fights and three years. Then it’s possible that the sport leaves him because nobody can stay on top forever.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

Bowing out of the sport himself boasting a perfect 29-0 professional record, Khabib, who won the vacant lightweight title in April 2018, landed successful defenses over the trio of former champions, Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje before calling time on his career in the sport.

In the midst of a stunning 11-fight undefeated spree, Makhachev’s submission win over Oliveira earlier this year came as his fifth consecutive stoppage victory over his undefeated run.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khabib Nurmagomedov famously walked away from fighting following his third UFC lightweight title defense in 2020.

After amassing an incredible 29-0 record, ‘The Eagle’ decided that it was time to hang up the gloves. Despite cutting his career short, Nurmagomedov is still considered one of the greatest fighters in UFC history. His legacy now continues through his students including current lightweight champions Islam Makhachev and Usman Nurmagomedov.

Fans today still question why a fighter who was in his prime and on top of the world would suddenly walk away from the sport that made him a millionaire. The decision to retire came just a few months after the tragic passing of Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s father and head coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. That undoubtedly played a significant role in his decision but keeping the promise he made to his mother is why we will likely never see ‘The Eagle’ compete again.

For Khabib Nurmagomedov, Keeping the Promise He Made to His Mother is ‘Everything’

Appearing at a Class A Events convention in Toronto, Nurmagomedov spoke about the love and respect he has for his mother and as a result, will never break the promise he made to her. The promise to never fight again.

“Because of I finish my career, because I promise mother, that’s why this one question, discussion between me and my mother become very famous,” Nurmagomedov said. “But we had a lot of different things people don’t know about this. Not only this promise. I follow not only this promise to my mother. I follow everything about Mother. You can have friends or kids, whatever. You can have whatever you want, but you’re never going to have one more mother. You have only one mother. For me, it’s everything. For me, it’s everything.”

“I love mother because of millions and millions of reason,” Nurmagomedov said. “I know even in Dagestan, this is not about Dagestan, but I know a lot of people have bad relationship with parents. I really, really don’t understand this. How can people have bad relationship with parents? Yes, mother, for me is everything. Even now, she is still with me, like living with me in same house. I treat her like queen.”

Though we may never see Khabib Nurmagomedov compete inside the Octagon again, you can still catch a glimpse of ‘The Eagle’ cornering the next generation of Dagestani superstars.
