Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov has admitted there are three opponents that come to mind that he wishes he had shared the Octagon with during his time with the promotion, including former duel-weight titleholder, Georges St-Pierre, and scheduled foe, Tony Ferguson.

Khabib, a former undisputed lightweight champion under the UFC banner, called time on his professional mixed martial arts career back in October 2020 in Abu Dhabi, UAE – defeating former interim titleholder, Justin Gaethje with a second round triangle to successfully unify the division championships.

In the time since, Khabib has been linked with a slew of potential fights to snap a retirement, however, has insisted he will not return to the Octagon, after promising his mother to never make a professional walk following the loss of his coach and father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

Khabib Nurmagomedov names 3 opponents he wished he fought in the UFC

Admitting there are three opponents he wished he had of fought before calling time on his professional career, Khabib weighed up a fight with long-time rival, former interim gold holder, Ferguson.

“Of course, it was Tony Ferguson for sure,” Khabib Nurmagomedov said during an interview with Class A Events. “But this has never happened.”

“In my mind? Yes, it was couple fighters – it was couple fighters for sure,” Khabib Nurmagomedov explained. “OK, GSP (Georges St-Pierre), if you want – but I respect this guy a lot. I grew up with his fights. When he became UFC champion in 2007, I (hadn’t started) my professional career. I was an amateur fighter and watched a lot of his fights with my father. GSP was like a role model in MMA for me. If you guys want (that) fight, OK – let’s say GSP.”

As for Khabib’s third choice of opponent, he picked former UFC and WEC lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis, who was previously linked briefly with a 2019 fight against the Dagestan native.

“And I think it was 2014-15 when Anthony Pettis was UFC champion,” Khabib Nurmagomedov explained. “(At) that time, I really, really wanted to fight this guy, but then he lost his title vsd. Rafael dos Anjos. After that his career go down – he never came back. It was Anthony Pettis, Tony Ferguson, and Canadian superstar GSP.” (Transcribed by Yahoo! Finance)

‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor is watching back some of his older fights and offering his thoughts on his performances. This Irish superstar recently Tweeted about his UFC lightweight world championship showdown against ‘The Eagle’ Khabib Nurmagomedov.

During this bout, while McGregor was being held on his back, he launched a knee and landed it on Nurmagomedov who was on top but still a grounded fighter. Kicks and knees to grounded opponents are illegal, even if the offending fighter is also on the ground.

Conor McGregor first Tweeted a name for this maneuver, he said:

“I call this knee strike “the springbok” Remember reebok? Ye well this is springbok. You ever see a springbok jump? Well just have a look at that knee springbok into this eye sock hahahaja I’m the goat of unseen shots. That’s without question. God bless the dead.”

Conor McGregor admits ‘Springbok’ knee was illegal

UFC commentator Joe Rogan did point out that this knee was illegal. The referee Herb Dean did not stop the action or issue a warning when it happened.

McGregor admits that this knee attack was illegal, but still beautiful. He explained:

“The knee into the eye socket was illegal yes, from this position. A beauty tho. Never before seen shot. Like many of my shots. I use the mount defence leg as a spring board, loading the knee below it. Release and straight to the eye socket. Smashed it in! @joerogan.”

In a deleted voice note, Conor McGregor responded to Joe Rogan‘scommentary from many years ago when the fight happened. ‘Notorious’ said:

“’That was an illegal knee on the head of a grounded opponent.’ “Shut up, Joe, you little fool. What are you talking about ‘smash this and smash that’? I was smashing my knee into his f***ing eye socket, yeah? ‘That’s a knee to a grounded opponent, call the cops.’”

Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov has claimed that featherweight kingpin, Alexander Volkanovski will provide a much tougher test to his teammate, Islam Makhachev – than Charles Oliveira mustered at UFC 280 last month.

Guiding the surging Makhachev to last month’s pay-per-view headliner against former lightweight titleholder, Oliveira, Khabib watched on from the corner as his compatriot landed a dominant, one-sided second round submission win over the Brazilian – wrapping up an arm-triangle win to land the vacant division crown.

Following the main event bout, Makhachev was joined in the Octagon by undisputed featherweight best, Volkanovski – with the promotion since confirming a lightweight title fight between Makhachev and Volkanovski for UFC 284 in February in Perth, Australia.

Khabib touts Alexander Volkanovski as “tough” test for Islam Makhachev

Sharing his thoughts on the matchup between his protége and Australian standout, Volkanovski, Khabib admitted the latter will likely provide a tough test to Makhachev given his considerable Octagon and high-level fight experience.

“I told Islam (Makhachev), before the last fight [against Charles Oliveira], (Alexander) Volkanovski is going to be tougher than Charles Oliveira,” Khabib Nurmagomedov told Class A Events during a recent interview. “He has good experience. Charles and Volkanovski have the same experience… but if you talk about fighting IQ and big heart, I think Volkanovski is better than him [Oliveira].”

“I think Volkanovski is going to be a tougher opponent for Islam than Charles Oliveira,” Khabib Nurmagomedov continued. “But who cares? We’re gonna finish this guy.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Riding an undefeated Octagon tenure, incoming lightweight champion, Volkanovski most recently co-headlined UFC 276 back in July during International Fight Week – defeating Max Holloway with a unanimous decision win in the pair’s trilogy title fight.

Volkanovski won the title against Holloway in 2019, before defending the crown in an immediate rematch, and then dispatching both Brian Ortega, and Chan Sung Jung during his title reign.
