Khabib Nurmagomedov revealed Islam Makhachev’s key to victory over Alexander Volkansovski.
Following his win over Charles Oliveira, Makhachev didn’t take too long to target his first title defense. The newly crowned lightweight champion would call for a fight with featherweight champion, Volkanovski.
“I have a new target,” Makhachev said during post-fight media duties. “I have to be No. 1 pound-for-pound champion, that’s why I have to go to Australia and beat this guy.”
It was no secret this fight would likely be next, Volkanovski has been calling for a shot since his third win over Max Holloway back in July and the 34-year-old even served as a backup for the fight between Makhavchev and Oliveira.
Khabib Nurmagomedov confident of victory
Nurmagomedov has always had the utmost belief in his close friend Makhachev, having predicted him to become champion for some time now. When it comes to Makhachev’s first potential defense against Valkanoscki, Nurmagomedov’s confidence wouldn’t waiver.
When talking to ESPN post-fight, Nurmagomedov was matter-of-fact when explaining how he sees the fight playing out.
“Let him prepare this,” Nurmagomedov began. “Clinch wrestling. Like freestyle wrestling, Greco Roman. Grappling. Thai clinch, left hand. Volkanovski, we respect you, but we’re gonna take your place, brother.
“You are pound-for-pound number one right now, but Islam want to be on your side. You have to prepare. Clinch, lotta knees. He’s gonna eat lotta knees. He’s gonna take his all energy, take him down, and he’s gonna choke him out. This is what I think. This is the way how I see how’s fight gonna go.”
Volkanovski has never tasted defeat in the UFC, let alone be finished but Nurmagomdeov claims the reiging 145lb champion has a lot of catching up to do to reach Makhachev’s level.
“Of course, Volkanovski can box.” Nuurmagomedov said. “He have amazing experience. How many time he defend his title?
“Thai clinch gonna kill him. Even if he know this… let him prepare this. How many month? Five month, six month? (Islam’s) doing this 20 years.” (H/T BloodyElbow)

Guiding newly minted undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makahchev at the Abu Dhabi, UAE event, Khabib watched on as his teammate struck gold with a second round arm-triangle submission win over Charles Oliveira at the Etihad Arena.
During the post-fight celebrations afterwards, however, Khabib’s cousin, Abubakar found himself involved in a physical altercation with the above-mentioned, Chimaev, with the latter landing a series of strikes with a closed fist on Nurmagomedov.
“What happened yesterday does not show us well,” Khabib Nurmagomedov said. “Neither me, nor Khamzat, nor Abubakar. To tell the truth, we are tired of this nonsense! Here we are gathered together as brothers. We talked to each other, and we apologized to each other, hugged. And Inshallah, I hope that in the future that we will only gather and fight for good reasons.”
“Today Islam won the belt, he’s the first,” Khabib continued. “The next one is very close, and it’s gonna be Khamzat. And Khamzat let us all get together. So when Khamzat wins the belt, it’s not for showing off, not for this conversation, that we are going to celebrate. We will celebrate for our new champion, Inshallah.”
“I hope that our sad moment right here, that it will never happen to anyone else again,” Khabib explained. “So that people don’t talk badly about us, we will always be together as brothers, Inshallah.”

According to UFC color commentator and former two-weight champion, Daniel Cormier, upwards of $1 million was forked out for the camp of newly minted undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev to prepare for his UFC 280 clash with Charles Oliveira over the weekend.
Headlining UFC 280 in a return to Abu Dhabi, UAE – Makhachev competed with his fellow surging contender, former undisputed titleholder, Oliveira for vacant 155lbs gold.
Landing a series of takedowns in the opening round, Makhachev managed to score a rather heavy knockdown on the Brazilian midway through the second, countering a front kick attempt with a left hand and a right hook, flattening the Sao Paulo favorite.
Immediately following the dangerous grappler, Oliveira to the canvas, Makhachev sought out an arm-triangle choke, before moving to side control with aplomb, forcing a tap to secure American Kickboxing Academy its second UFC lightweight crown after the coronation of his teammate, Khabib Nurmagomedov back in 2018.
Islam Makhachev saw upwards of $1,000,000 pumped into his UFC 280 camp
Providing some insight into the training methods and profile of Islam Makhachev’s camp ahead of his ‘Fight Island’ showdown with Oliveira, the aforenoted, Cormier confirmed that upwards of a $1 million was spent in order to prepare Makhachev for his premier title siege under the UFC banner.
Set to return to camp in just over two weeks’ time under the tutelage of close friend and compatriot, Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev extends his stunning undefeated streak to 11 straight fights with his submission win over Oliveira – in turn snapping the Brazilian division-best unbeaten run. The submission win also came as Makhachev’s eleventh since his 2010 career birth.
After pure chaos in the UFC 280 main event, Islam Makhachev has emerged as the victor. After pure chaos in the UFC 280 main event, Islam Makhachev has emerged as the victor. However, in classic fashion, Conor McGregor wasn’t very impressed after the win and took to Twitter to claim that he’s finally refined the style needed to defeat Makhachev’s.
The battle between former champion Charles Oliveira and the young Dagestani fighter was intense. The two fighters were both on incredible win streaks of 10 victories or more, and fans everywhere were split on who’d walk away victorious.
The first round was an interesting affair, as Oliveira quickly pulled guard early into the round. From there, mad scrambles and transitions would occur, with ‘Do Bronx’ attempting to threaten with submissions or get back to his feet. Makhachev was decidedly focused on control and was obviously looking to put Oliveira in a position where Makhachev could enact his will.
Eventually, time in the first expired, and both men went back to their corners. The second round kicked off and featured some wild standup, with both men landing vicious blows. However, Oliveira would attempt a flying knee and leave himself exposed to a bomb of a right hook by Makhachev. This sent the Brazilian crashing to the canvas, and the Dagestani nightmare quickly jumped on a head-and-arm choke to seal the deal and force the tap.
It was a momentous win for Islam Makhachev, who has been battling expectations his entire career due to following in the footsteps of his best friend Khabib Nurmagomedov, the legend himself. Conor McGregor, however, wasn’t very impressed. Taking to Twitter, the Irishman would reveal that he’s allegedly cracked the DaVinci code of MMA so to speak.
Conor McGregor proclaims he’s figured out how to beat Islam Makhachev
In a series of now-deleted tweets, McGregor would start off by saying that he’s “developed the tools” to defeat the ruthless Dagestani style that fighters like Nurmagomedov and Makhachev employ.
“I have the system to hurt this style of fighting guys,” Conor McGregor would insist. “I am telling you. Bro is a sh*t jocks. Fat mouth shut your mouth you done nothing tonight except go against fathers wishes and run. It’s not father’s plan completed yet, pal. You know. Your people know and they talk about you.”
Maybe sensing that he’d gone too far by bringing up Khabib Nurmagomedov’s deceased father (who was also Islam Makhachev’s coach), the tweets would soon be deleted by the Irish superstar.
Do you think Conor McGregor went too far with his recent callout of Islam Makhachev?
