On October 22nd, Charles Oliveira will step back into the Octagon, taking on Khabib Nurmagomedov’s protege Islam Makhachev to crown a new UFC lightweight champion.

With 10 straight wins, Makhachev walks into the bout as the No. 4 ranked lightweight, but he will face the toughest test of his mixed martial arts career as he meets the man many still recognize as the true lightweight champion. Guiding Makhachev in his training for a showdown with ‘Do Bronx’ is none other than UFC Hall of Famer, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The former UFC lightweight champion discussed his protege’s mental and physical state going into the biggest fight of his career in an interview clip shared by UFC Europe on Twitter.

“Islam (Makhachev) is at his peak right now. He’s not 26, 27, or 23. He’s 30. A week after the fight he’ll be 31. It’s the best time for any athlete. It’s a time when your mental and physical states should be in synergy. Sometimes your mental state is high, but your physical state is going down. Or when you’re 27 and at your physical peak, but your mental state is lower because you’re just 27, not 31.

“I think Islam is better than [Charles] overall. Of course, there are some potential dangers that we’re working on. Dangers where Islam needs to be careful. Other than that, Islam should roll over him. It’s my opinion. Somebody might not like it, but again, I’m just stating my opinion. People say that’s disrespect, but I see no disrespect here. On October 22nd, we want to go through him.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov Says Tony Ferguson’s ‘Time Is Up’

While Khabib Nurmagomedov has kept busy preparing Islam Makhachaev for his long-awaited UFC title opportunity, the undefeated icon still finds time to talk about division rival Tony Ferguson.

Despite the fact that the two stars never faced each other inside the Octagon, both have spent what feels like a lifetime taking shots at one another in interviews and on social media. Khabib has once again spoken out about ‘El Cucuy‘ and his recent struggles inside the Octagon.

“His time is up, and there’s no way to get it back,” Nurmagomedov said. “Not Khabib, not Tony, nobody. We had our time, and it passed. He continues to fight. He needs money. You have to pay your bills in the U.S., and I’m sure that since he’s a Californian, I know all the Californian fighters – everything he earned, take half of that. I think he keeps fighting for money to pay bills, taxes. He has a family, I think he has two kids. I don’t blame him, but you can’t get back time. When your time goes away it doesn’t ask your name.”

Tony Ferguson is currently riding a five-fight losing streak, though, to his credit, those losses have come against some of the absolute best fighters in the world including Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, and Michael Chandler. Most recently, ‘El Cucuy’ suffered a fourth-round submission loss to Nate Diaz in the UFC 279 main event on September 10th.

Khabib ‘Doesn’t Blame’ Ferguson For Continuing To Fight

While former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov believes that Tony Ferguson’s time in the sport is up, he’s sympathized with his decision to keep fighting. In early 2020, Ferguson was being lined up to challenge “The Eagle” for the undisputed 155-pound title. “El Cucuy” had earned that position with a lengthy 12-fight win streak that…

Tyron Woodley says Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t even crack his all-time top 10

Tyron WoodleyFormer UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is not convinced of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s lightweight GOAT status. In fact, ‘The Chosen One’ wouldn’t even put ‘The Eagle’ in his top-10 of all-time greats. Tyron Woodley

Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is not convinced of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s lightweight GOAT status. In fact, ‘The Chosen One’ wouldn’t even put ‘The Eagle’ in his top-10 of all-time greats.

During an appearance on Jake Pauls’s BS Show, Woodley shared his thoughts on some of the greatest fighters in UFC history. When Nurmagomedov’s name popped up, ‘T-Wood’ quickly dismissed him from the list.

“[Khabib] on my top 10 list? Probably not. I f*ck with Khabib. I like him, I respect him a lot. I think he’s a good fighter,” Woodley said. “I think his type of fight for that weight class (lightweight), nobody could do that besides Sean Sherk back in the day. But, like, he was just really aggressive, but I didn’t see the wrestler with good hands fight him so I couldn’t really jump on that train.”

Following a second-round submission of Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, Khabib Nurmagomedov called it a career after just three defenses of the lightweight championship he won two and a half years prior. Ending his career at 29-0, including 13 straight wins inside the Octagon, many still consider Nurmagomedov one of the greatest to step into the cage. However, there are those that side with Tyron Woodley in his belief that Nurmagomedov’s strength of schedule was lacking true competition outside of his last three fights against Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and the aforementioned Justin Gaethje.

Who Is on Tyron Woodley’s List of the Greatest Fighters?

Tyron Woodley is justifiably unconvinced of Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s status as a GOAT in the sport of MMA. That begs the question, who is on Woodley’s list of the best of the best? Speaking to Paul, ‘The Chosen One’ shared a few names that shouldn’t be too surprising. Former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was an obvious choice for Woodley, as was Demetrious Johson who just added the ONE lightweight world championship to his resume with a spectacular fourth-round flying knee knockout of Adriano Moraes at ONE on Prime Video in August.

Next up was Georges St-Pierre who reigned over the UFC’s welterweight division at the same time as Woodley’s other namedrop, Anderson Silva. ‘The Spider‘ was nothing short of dominant during his middleweight title reign and still holds a plethora of UFC records in the division, including the most consecutive title defenses, most knockdowns, and most finishes. He also has the longest win streak in UFC history, winning 16 straight while holding the middleweight world title for an incredible 2457 days.

Since stepping away from the Octagon, Anderson Silva has continued to find success inside the squared circle. He successfully defeated boxing icon Julio Cesar Chavez Jr via split decision and will fight two-time Tyron Woodley opponent Jake Paul on October 29th.

Exclusive – Justin Gaethje believes win over Islam Makhachev would ‘even the score’ with Khabib Nurmagomedov

Justin GaethjeFormer interim UFC lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje believes a potential victory over Islam Makhachev in the future if the duo clash – would likely go a long way to evening a score between himself and Makhachev’s teammate and former foe, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Justin Gaethje

Former interim UFC lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje believes a potential victory over Islam Makhachev in the future if the duo clash – would likely go a long way to evening a score between himself and Makhachev’s teammate and former foe, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Gaethje, the current #3 ranked lightweight contender, most recently headlined UFC 274 back in May against former undisputed champion, Charles Oliveira, suffering a first round rear-naked choke loss to the Brazilian in an unsuccessful title siege.

With Oliveira missing championship weight for the fight, Gaethje was the only eligible party to win gold at UFC 274, however, was rocked, admittedly on at least five separate occasions on the feet by the former, before he was dropped and then submitted in brutal fashion.

The defeat came as Gaethje’s second in his bid to become the undisputed lightweight champion during his Octagon tenure, having previously dropped a second round triangle loss to the aforenoted, Khabib at UFC 254.

Yet to book his next walk since his submission loss to Oliveira, Gaethje, who has been linked with a fight against Rafael Fiziev in an end-of-year clash after both recently underwent surgical procedures to address nose fractures.

Justin Gaethje has been linked with a future fight against stablemate Islam Makhachev

The ONX Labs mainstay is sure to have eyes fixed on this month’s vacant title fight between Oliveira and Makhachev, and insists that a future fight, and victory over the latter would likely go beyond evening the score with Khabib.

“Yes,” Justin Gaethje said during a recent interview with LowKick MMA reporter, Makoa Goble when asked if a win over Makhachev would even the score with Khabib. “That would be, yeah – that would be better than evening the score, probably.”

Having shared the Octagon with Oliveira, Gaethje has shared his thoughts on how the Brazilian will fare against Makhachev at UFC 280.

“I think the main part of that statement, is (Charles) Oliveira’s ability to not be submitted by (Islam) Makhachev,” Justin Gaethje said. “If he doesn’t get submitted, then most likely, he’s on his back for three rounds or more. And then Makhachev wins a decision, so.”

“… If you know anything about this, this is what you think is supposed to happen,” Justin Gaethje explained. “But if you just watched Kamaru (Usman’s) fight (against Leon Edwards), then you know this is the best sport in the world because anything can happen at any given moment. I’m excited to watch the fight. I hope Oliveira beats him up. I hope Oliveira keeps it standing – I hope Oliveira stays on top of him. It would be cool to see all those things – we’ll see. We’ll see what happens, (it’s) a crazy sport.”
