UFC President Dana White has revealed Conor McGregor is keen to defend his lightweight title against Khabib Nurmagomedov in Russia after his boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

McGregor is set to take on Mayweather in the ring on August 26, meaning the UFC lightweight belt won’t be on the line for some time. However, White told MMAjunkie that the Irishman is ready to go into the lion’s den.

“You know what Conor told me? He said, ‘I want Khabib in Russia,'” said White. “Isn’t he (expletive) awesome? He’s like, ‘I want Khabib, in Russia.’ He’s awesome. Conor McGregor is a (expletive) unicorn. There’s nothing like him. He’s working on boxing Floyd Mayweather and then he’s talking about fighting Khabib in Russia right after.”

As noted in the report, Nurmagomedov is regarded as the second-best lightweight in the UFC having won all eight of his bouts in the promotion so far.

The 28-year-old Russian has been set to fight Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title on three occasions, although the bout has fallen through each time, most recently at UFC 209 when Nurmagomedov was put in hospital after a difficult weight cut. “That fight still needs to happen,” said White.

As noted by Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting, McGregor isn’t the only fighter who fancies a shot at Nurmagomedov; after beating Michael Chiesa on Sunday, Kevin Lee called out the Russian:

Meanwhile, Jorge Masvidal, who lost to Demian Maia at UFC 211 said he’d been keen to fight Nurmagomedov in his homeland back in February:

The UFC has yet to stage an event in Russia and Nurmagomedov has insisted in the past a show should be scheduled in the country, especially in favour of Ireland, where McGregor is from.

“Ireland only has like six million people. I am from Russia, 150 million people,” he told the Luke Thomas Show in October (h/t Darragh Murphy of Joe.co.uk). “If UFC don’t give me the title fight after this fight, I’m going to show how I have power in Russia, and I know if I don’t fight for the title next fight, UFC will never ever go to Russia.”

McGregor’s last outing in the UFC came against Eddie Alvarez, when he clinched the lightweight title. With the win, the Irishman became the first fighter in the history of the sport to hold two titles concurrently, having also been in possession of the featherweight belt at the time.

The rivalry between top UFC lightweights Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson continues. Following the main event of UFC Fight Night 112 on Sunday night in Oklahoma City, Kevin Lee, who picked up a controversial submission win over Michael Chiesa, called out Nurmagomedov. Although it would be an exciting matchup, there is one problem with making that fight happen, and that is Nurmagomedov only wanting to fight Ferguson.

Although their interim title bout at UFC 209 fell through, Nurmagomedov made it clear during a recent interview with RT Sport (h/t to MMA Fighting) that he plans to return in the fall and when he does, he is only interested in fighting Ferguson.

“I’m going through rehabilitation. I can’t give you a certain date, but it’s going to be this fall. I’ll take this summer to rehabilitate, and in the fall, I’ll start my preparation, and at the end of the fall, I want to have a fight. We’ll go for the same fight with Ferguson. I have no interest in any other fight. I have to finish my business with Tony Ferguson.”

It appears at a fight between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov might never happen as the promotion has attempted to book the fighters against each other on three separate occasions yet the fight has failed to materialize every time due to injury withdrawals.

Ferguson has heard Nurmagomedov loud and clear, but he is not so quick to reschedule the fight with Nurmagomedov. Ferguson worked as an analyst for FOX Sports for UFC Fight Night 112 and during the show, he said that Nurmagomedov needed to “beg” for that fight to be remade.

“Team Khabib – I’m sorry, Team Tiramisu, this message is for you. You checked yourself into rehab [but] what you need to do is find Jenny Craig. You need a dietician, my friend. You say we have unfinished business. I showed up, I made weight, you decided to chicken out, my friend.

“Actually, you’re not my friend. I don’t like you at all. You don’t even come close to it. You and your fuzzy hat. But I can’t wait to shut that hype train down so maybe if you’re lucky and you beg me enough, I might give you that one chance to get that belt against numero uno right here. Until then, have fun making that weight cut. . .

“Good luck trying to get this fight. So like I said, if you want to beg me for that fight, maybe somewhere along the lines of UFC 300, if you do make that weight, maybe you’ll show up and you’ll actually make the weight and we’ll have a fight and maybe the fans can see you get that one loss on your record.”

With UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor not around right now, the division is a bit backlogged, to say the least. With Nurmagomedov out of action, Ferguson has been looking for a fight with Nate Diaz, who has not shown much interest in the fight. The UFC could book Lee against Ferguson, but Ferguson has gone on record by saying that Lee’s resume still didn’t meet his “standards” for a fight.

The UFC is ready to kick off its fifth ever event from Oklahoma City when they hit up the Chesapeake Energy Arena for UFC Fight Night 112 this Saturday (June 24, 2017).

The main card is set to air on FS1 and will feature a main event between top 155-pound prospects Michael Chiesa and Kevin Lee. There has been a bit of bad blood added to this one, as the pair engaged in a scuffle on stage of the UFC’s summer press conference earlier this year. It has been confirmed that former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and Jon Anik will be calling the action from Octagon-side come fight night in Oklahoma City.

It was also confirmed that analysts on the UFC on FOX’s weigh-in, pre-show, and post-show will be current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Karyn Bryant as per usual, however, a new fighter will be making his analyst debut on FOX that night – none other than No. 2-ranked lightweight Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson. Ferguson spoke to MMA Junkie a while back about the possibility of serving as an analyst, and stated that he believes the position is a natural fit for him:

“I just believe my fight IQ is through the roof,” Ferguson said. “Wholeheartedly and seriously, I love to watch the fights. I like to take a paradigm step outside of the box and really analyze the fight as a whole instead of being in a biased situation. I really believe they saw that, and they could see I can take a step outside of it regardless of if it’s my weight or not.”

Ferguson will save the bulk of his analysis for his duties on FOX, but did offer some quick thoughts on the ‘great’ match-up between Michael Chiesa and Kevin Lee in the main event:

“I expect fireworks,” Ferguson said. “I expect Kevin to come out a little more fuego – a little more fire – (and) attack the body of Chiesa. I think if Lee does it right, he picks him apart. He will have a big victory. But Chiesa is a tough son of a (expletive), and this is going to be a great fight.”
