John McCarthy does not believe Khabib Nurmagomedov is the greatest mixed martial artist of all time.

Big John, one of the most reputed MMA officials, agrees with UFC president Dana White that the former lightweight champion can not be called the GOAT. Khabib had a dominant run in the promotion for as long as it lasted, maintaining an unblemished record of 29-0 by the time he chose to hang up the gloves.

John McCarthy agrees with Dana White that Khabib is not the GOAT

In an episode of his podcast with Josh Thompson, McCarthy shared his thoughts on the GOAT debate and extended his support for Dana White’s take.

“I don’t disagree with him at all [Dana White claiming Khabib isn’t the MMA GOAT]. I think that he did retire too early. I’ve always said the most dominant fighter I’ve seen in the cage has been Khabib. He dominated great fighters, 10-8 rounds, consistently at times, [but] Jon Jones is the most talented fighter that I’ve seen in the cage,” McCarthy noted (h/t Sportskeeda).

Khabib never appeared to be in any real danger in any of his fights. Jones on the other hand might have had close bouts but also has a ton more experience inside the cage at the highest level.

“Here’s the big difference: Jon Jones has had 15 title fights. How many title fights does Khabib have? That’s a huge difference, and I think that’s what Dana is talking about. I think Jon Jones is [the best ever],” McCarthy added.

Although Khabib retired undefeated, many believe that he stepped away too soon. With 13 bouts and only three title defenses in the organization, it is hard to stack up his resume against someone like Jones, who has more title fights (15) than Khabib’s entire UFC career.

UFC’s President Dana White has recently revealed why he does not consider Khabib Nurmagomedov (29-0 MMA) the best UFC athlete of all time.

Nurmagomedov retired back in 2020 with an undefeated record, after defending his Lightweight belt for a third-consecutive time against Justin Gaethje

‘The Eagle’ was also able to pick up impressive wins against Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier and Rafael Dos Anjos during his UFC career – who are all former Champions. However, the main critique for most people regarding Khabib Nurmagomedov’s legacy is the level of fighters he faced before 2014.

During a recent interview with ‘GQ Sports’, Dana White was given the chance to set the record straight and explain why he doesn’t believe Nurmagomedov is not the all-time best.

“It’s so hard,” White uttered. “Obviously, he is talented enough. You know, who knows what he could accomplish? But he retired too early. I mean Jon Jones is probably gonna fight at heavyweight this year. You know, whatever you think about Jon, it’s hard not to call him a G.O.A.T.”

“Believe me when I tell you, I have tried to convince Khabib to come out of retirement. We will see what happens over the next couple of years. But I feel like he left in his prime. I mean, look at what he did to Justin Gaethje right before he retired.”

Dana White struggles to find a room for Khabib Nurmagomedov in his Top-5 list

When asked to devise a list of whom his personal Top-5 fighters of all time are, Dana White was lost for space to put the former Lightweight Champion.

“Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, Ronda Rousey, Conor McGregor, GSP. There’s so many other people that should be on there. Usman should be on there.”

Jon Jones, Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre are usual suspects when it comes to this sort of list, but Kamaru Usman, Conor McGregor, and Ronda Rousey are the more surprising picks. Nevertheless, in regards to what they have done for the sport, you can understand the reasoning behind White’s choices.

Do you think Khabib Nurmagomedov is the UFC’s all-time best or does Dana White have a point, did Khabib retire too early?

Charles Oliveira, Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khabib Nurmagomedov has clapped back at Charles Oliveira for his criticism.

The lightweight top contender will finally get his shot to claim the gold back against Islam Makhachev at UFC 280 on Oct. 22 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Going into the bout, Oliveira criticized Makhachev and his team for being “arrogant.” Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib, backed his protege to come out on top of the contest and had previously bashed “do Bronx” for his losses in the promotion.

Khabib Nurmagomedov defended his camp against Charles Oliveira

During a recent appearance at his own promotion’s event, Eagle FC, Khabib was interviewed by Sambo Says.

“First of all, how can you disparage the man who won the Fighter of the Year award in 2022?” he said (ht Middle Easy). “So no one is disparaging him. 11 fights in a row he has won with so many finishes,” Nurmagomedov said. “I think it is silly to think we’re underestimating this fight. This is a very hard fight first of all.

Second, tell me in what interview did he refer to him with arrogance? He always referred to him as a champion. If we say that we want to finish the fight early I don’t see arrogance in that. I don’t see arrogance in that at all. We have a plan. We want to finish the fight early. I think that Charles also has a plan and that he also wants to finish Islam.

I think he also wants to hit his opponent in the face and use his kicks, knees, punches, and elbows. Right? He wants to choke his opponent out, break their bones, etc. That’s the reason we step into the Octagon right? So what is that not arrogance from his side? That he wants to beat Islam Makhachev? Am I right?”

Khabib believes Oliveira is starting to feel the pressure

Khabib theorized that Oliveira may be starting to crumble under the pressure of the highly-anticipated matchup. He compared his previous opponents and juxtaposed their records with Makhachev, showing the contrast in their resumes.

“What we’re talking about is true right? So tell me who offended him?” he added. “Not Ali, not myself, no one insulted him. Definitely not Islam, he has never insulted anyone I don’t see any kind of arrogance here. I simply think he’s starting to feel the pressure of the fight. You know when you’re trying to fight someone, for example, someone like Gaethje, or Chandler or Poireir you know that they have already lost in the past. You can see their pluses and minuses and you can identify the “switch” in their fight that leads them to victory or defeat.

So what I believe, and this is solely my point of view, is he may consider this arrogance as well but it doesn’t matter, it appears to me that he looks at Islam and can’t find that “switch” so because of that he gets nervous. He starts to talk about this so-called arrogance and so on but who does this really concern? On October 22 he steps into the cage and we plan on finishing him whether he likes it or not.”

How do you think Khabib Nurmagomedov’s protegee will fair against Charles Oliveira?

Conor McGregor

Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor has hinted that his MMA career may be coming to an end.

It was recently announced that McGregor would feature alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the upcoming remake of the classic movie, Road House. This may well indicate a change of profession for the man who played such an internal role in opening MMA up to the masses.

Shortly after it was announced that he would star in the remake, Conor McGregor would take to Twitter to post a seven word message: “MMA, I’ll never forget you! Easy work.”

This post is very much vintage McGregor in all its cryptic glory, as it doesn’t entirely close the door on a return to the sport, perhaps indicating that he will simply dedicate the coming months to the film, and will then return to the sport after.

Ali Abdelaziz Pokes Fun at Conor McGregor

Ali Abdelaziz, the president of Dominance MMA and Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s manager, was quick to react to Conor McGregor’s tweet. Abdelaziz quote tweeted a reply to McGregor which showed highlights of the Irishman’s unsuccessful title fight with Nurmagomedov, paired with the following caption: “Do you miss this man breathing all over you and take your manhood away from you.”

Abdelaziz would also later retweet McGregor’s post with the following GIF:

Whether Conor McGregor is truly done with MMA for good or not is still somewhat up in the air, but it does seem apparent that fighting is not his current primary focus. The ‘Notorious’ one is still recovering from the leg injury sustained in the trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier, and will likely not be fully fit till 2023.

Do you think Conor McGregor will fight again?
