Nate Diaz Says He Could Have Taught Conor McGregor ‘To Not Get Choked’ In Khabib Nurmagomedov Fight At UFC 229

Nate Diaz says that if Conor McGregor had accepted a trilogy bout with him, he would have defeated Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.

In 2016, the Stockton native faced McGregor in back-to-back fights. In their first outing at UFC 196, Diaz scored a second-round submission via rear-naked choke over the Irishman. Five months later the two would run it back at UFC 202. This time McGregor would earn a majority decision to even the series at one apiece.

Six years later and fans are still clamoring for a trilogy bout, but ‘Notorious’ went a different route landing him in the history books. Just months removed from his rematch with Diaz, McGregor would go on to face Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight championship. Already the promotion’s featherweight champion following a spectacular knockout of former champion Jose Aldo, McGregor knocked out ‘The Underground King’ in the second round to become the UFC’s first reigning two-division champion.

Following his win over Alvarez, McGregor stepped out of the Octagon and into the squared circle for a boxing spectacle with Floyd Mayweather. ‘Notorious’ would lose the bout in what would be the first in a string of losses for the Irishman.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour, Nate Diaz discussed McGregor’s run over the last few years, including his loss to the boxing icon.

Floyd Mayweather went and showed the blueprint to beat him, let him punch himself out and in the 10th round he beat his a**,” said Diaz. “I did that right before him.“

Nate Diaz Believes Conor McGregor Would Have Learned to ‘Not Punch Himself Out’ in Trilogy Bout

McGregor returned to the UFC following his foray into boxing, facing then-champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in what would become the biggest pay-per-view in the promotion’s history. The Irishman would come up short in his bid to reclaim UFC gold when ‘The Eagle’ submitted him via rear-naked choke in the fourth round.

“Then he went and got choked out by Khabib. If he would’ve finished the trilogy with me, he would’ve learned how to not get choked. If he would have finished the trilogy with me, he would have learned how to not punch himself out.

“He could have got better but he didn’t. He jumped the line and skipped the queue and they helped him by fighting Mayweather. No one has helped me the whole time, I have been relevant in the sport the whole time. I am still relevant in the sport now without even trying, I haven’t even had a fight.”

With McGregor expected to return in late 2022 and Nate Diaz still working to get the final fight of his UFC contract signed, the stars could align allowing for the long-awaited trilogy bout between the Stockton native and the Irish superstar to materialize.

Veteran UFC welterweight, Nate Diaz appears to have taken umbrage with the recent Hall of Fame induction of former undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov – labeling the Dagestan native as a “f*cking little b*tch”.

Diaz, who has been out of action since June of last year, most recently featured on the main card of UFC 263 against incoming welterweight title chaser, Leon Edwards, suffering a unanimous decision loss.

Tirelessly campaigning for an Octagon return in the year since, to no avail, nevertheless, Diaz currently retains just a single fight on his current UFC contract – and has made it clear that he wants to complete his contractual obligations, and step away from the sport for a period of time.

Nate Diaz has taken umbrage with Khabib Nurmagomedov’s UFC Hall of Fame induction

Previously linked to a matchup with former undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib, during the American Kickboxing Academy staple’s initial rise in the organization, Diaz failed to ever share the Octagon with the Russian lightweight, however, took the time to lambast the undefeated fighter’s fighting style and questioned his Hall of Fame induction earlier this month.

“Khabib’s (Nurmagomedov) a f*cking little b*tch too,” Nate Diaz told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “Who did he beat for the title? He got Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. They’ve both been finished off over and over the same way that he beat them. You ain’t no good.”

“You were a scared fighter, scared of fighting the whole time, and now you’re in the Hall of Fame,” Nate Diaz said. “I was here before the Hall of Fame even showed up actually. Now you’re a Hall of Famer. Whatever. I don’t even want nothing (sic) to do with the Hall of Fame. The Hall of fame is a joke too.”

Without a victory since 2019, Diaz’s most recent professional win came in the form of a unanimous decision triumph over former WEC and UFC lightweight titleholder, Anthony Pettis.

Georges St-Pierre Khamzat Chimaev

While the return of Georges St-Pierre has had MMA fans on the edge of their seats for years now, it sadly seems we are unlikely to ever witness such a spectacle.

If we ever did though, GSP has said it will be to prove he is truly the greatest mixed martial artist of all time. In a legendary battle against somebody he believes is currently the greatest, such as a Kamaru Usman, Khamzat Chimaev, or Khabib Nurmagomedov.

At UFC Vegas 58, St-Pierre appeared to show support to his fellow Canadian, Aiemann Zahabi, who was facing Ricky Turcios that night. Zahabi would emerge victorious from the cage, but on the sidelines, an interesting interview was taking place.

Georges St-Pierre Would Be Interested In Khamzat Chimaev Fight If He Were to Make MMA Return

“Well, if I would have to come back and fight today,” GSP began. “The three current fighters I would have choose to fight — and I won’t because I don’t wanna come back — but if I would have come back, I would want to be the best. So, I would hunt the best guys.”

A multi-division UFC champion and somebody that has the character of a true role model, GSP is virtually a consensus pick for the GOAT debate.

“Maybe Usman, Chimaev, and… Khabib, if he would still be there.” Georges St-Pierre continued. “But, unfortunately for me and for the fans and everybody, it’s not gonna happen. Because I’m done. And I don’t miss it at all!”

From the man himself, a fabled return will allegedly never happen. It’s bittersweet, as GSP ended his career at his peak. The opposite of what some fighters do, continuing to fight well past their prime, with failing chins and diminished skills.

But, it also could feel like GSP is leaving some questions unanswered. Maybe a battle with Khabib Nurmagomedov would’ve put a bow on both men’s careers, or maybe things were meant to end as they did.

If It was up to you, would GSP stay retired, or come back for a final fight?

Former UFC flyweight kingpin, Demetrious Johnson has heaped praise on the promotion’s former undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, admitting that while he selfishly wished the Dagestani had competed more, he still leaves behind an “amazing” legacy.

Johnson, who holds the record for most consecutive successful title defenses in the history of the UFC, managed to land an impressive rear-naked choke win over kickboxing star, Rodtang Jitmuangon under the ONE Championship banner back in March, in his most recent combat sports outing.

The Kentucky technician has also landed himself an upcoming flyweight title rematch against Brazilian berserker, Adriano Moraes at ONE 161, attempting to avenge a shocking second round knee KO loss to the champion back in April of last year.

Khabib, a former undisputed lightweight champion, retired from professional mixed martial arts back in October 2020 following a successful title unification win against former interim gold holder, Justin Gaethje on ‘Fight Island’ – calling time on his career boasting a perfect, 29-0 professional record.

Demetrious Johnson heaped praise on the career of Khabib Nurmagomedov

The American Kickboxing Academy staple was officially inducted into the promotion’s Hall of Fame during International Fight Week earlier this month – to mass affection and plaudits.

Another to shower the sambo specialist in praise comes in the form of Johnson, who described Khabib’s legacy as “amazing”.

“His (Khabib Nurmagomedov) career, his legacy is amazing,” Demetrious Johnson told Helen Yee during a recent interview. “I mean 29–0, undefeated. The thing that makes me sad is that I wish I would have seen him fight more. He had a lot injuries in the beginning of his career, in the middle of his career in the UFC.”

“But (he had) an amazing career,” Demetrious Johnson explained. “He’s made a lot of money and for him, it’s like, ‘Why do I need to fight? I don’t really need to fight, I’m happy.’” (Transcribed by Bloody Elbow)
